ABOUT
The journey making this documentary started with our director and cinematographer Jan Lim's idea of capturing the local Subaru car clubs in Southern California. The project quickly grew as he learned about the culture and met more people. He found himself traveling to Japan and across the United States with his fiancée, dogs, cousin AJ, and friends in the film industry. Jan had to start curating the stories to encompass a massive culture into one dissectible art form. There were numerous struggles throughout the self funded project. Jan had to prioritize this documentary over his production jobs while self investing it back through travel and gear to capture these stories. After over a year of filming it was time for post production. This is when Jan needed the most help and could not afford a post production team. Companies that said would financially help ended up backing out and Jan even turned down a deal to hand over what he had already filmed to a production company that said they would have edited it. After launching a unsuccessful kickstarter campaign, Jan was at a stand still with the documentary until his friend Jose Valdez devoted the next year to filming, editing, and help push this film to it's final stages. They then combined their time, energy and talents to bring this film to life. If it weren't for the the people involved in the film, the conversations and discussion with one another, the patience and support of family around us, the tears and pain of pushing forward everyday on this project, we would have not grown as individuals and have the chance to share this full feature independent documentary with you.

"Between The Lines" is greater than just a car documentary. It is the belief that there is more than what is seen on the surface level. It is the everyday struggle that we all live through and how we can turn that around into something greater. It is the belief we have within ourselves that we can do anything we set our minds to and make a difference to those around us. We have to believe in ourselves to the point where nothing will stop us from our dreams despite all of the physical, mental, monetary, and external forces. As we navigate through this one chance on Earth, keep in mind that there is more to life when you look "Between The Lines".
This documentary is a testament to that belief.

So I am planning on buying a Subaru WRX within a years time and seeing this documentary make me feel very excited to join the Subaru community. Even though I don’t own the car yet I already feel so welcomed into the community.
Gave all my passion and pocketbook into my first Subaru, to the point of having to give it up. A wreck, 2 EJ builds, and transmission. When it worked, it worked very very very well. Black, 2013, hatchback - an omen? What does it tell you, being upside down, I settled on a 19 sedan; and hope this will go better? The Subie dealer has been above and beyond since day 1, and have earned my loyalty.

I really clicked with the guy that launched his off the cliff, i have the same story pretty much just i got hit by a drunk driver doing 60mph, earlier that day I pointed at a wrx while going down the highway and said to my friend, thats going to be my next car, little did I know of the events that would take place that night

As "The Family Man" in this movie, I hope that it will inspire others to go to their local blood bank and donate either platelets (as I do) or blood to help safe the life of someone you will never know. I am so lucky to know Jan and Jose who made this movie as well as the others who are part of this documentary that explains the love we all have for each other and for Subaru cars and the Subaru community.
I have a rare blood type so, I donate often. They actually contact me and ask meet to come in when they start running low. As for the documentary, I didn't realize that Subarus had such a cult following. At work, I see hundreds of Subarus every day. I never really think about the fact that each one will be going to a person who will LOVE it for years to come
John Mccalister I applaud your helping out so many with a rare blood type. I'm A- which is somewhat rare. When I got my WRX I was so surprised to get the peace sign flashed to me. But it is the way for the owners to acknowledge their love of this car I feel like I am part of a big family
Stephen Mirkin It kinda freaked me out too. I got mine through our employee lease program and my wife and I drove it from Indiana to California and back. I really only got the deuces in California but, that was the only place nice enough to drive with the windows down
I have not been outside of California with my WRX, but assume they would give you the same "peace sign" when they encounter your Subie. But, WRX's are sold the most in California.
Stephen Mirkin Well, as you can probably imagine, all models of Subaru are quite common in Lafayette Indiana. They almost seem to grow on trees here just because of SIA and the sheer number of people who work there. I don't see any peace signs here because so many people have them. It isn't so much an exclusive club like everywhere else

I also used to mountain bike most of my life and a bad snowboarding accident changed all of that. My hips are really bad so now I also turn to cars more and am a huge Subaru fan.

This was a great documentary. I have owned 2 Subaru's so far and the community is one of the best I've ever come across. To have it documented like this and in so many ways and experiences is incredible. Great piece of work.
Listed my Subaru for sale a week ago. After watching this documentary it’s no longer up for sale it made me realise how amazing this lifestyle is and the people I’ve met along the way have made it all worth it.

I definitely cried at the end, as a lover of dogs and of Subarus. I can relate to how our canine friends help us cope through some really rough stuff. It is pure love from our dog friends to us; it is unconditional and steadfast.

I miss living in simi valley because of how close and in the middle of car culture LA is but this movie helped me to realize that it doesn't matter how in the middle you are or aren't these people are everywhere and I probably don't have to go far to experience the love awesomeness and companionship that these people that make up the community provide I'm sure it's closer then I think but I don't like being judged I like being happy and content so I tend to stay off social media like face book and instagram and unfortunately these days those are pretty important networking tools to meet lots of cool people but I wish sometimes I had more then an awesome video to share these feelings with people although it is good to know that there are good genuine people out there that are in it for all the right reasons and that is worth sharing and being happy about, not look at me I got this and that even though that can be cool as long as your a hard worker but I'm more about the underlying facts of why we all love Subaru's and cars in general which for me is the community cause whenever I see or talk to someone with the same love it's like we know each other instantly and get each other that's what's great! Sorry for rambling on Jan this movie just go me so excited and happy and sad at the same time I am sending my thoughts and prayers towards Sophie and you and your family thanks so much for sharing your and other awesome people's experience those were great interviews !
Hi Dillan, Don't be sorry for rambling, I like hearing people's thoughts and it helps me understand how beautifully different each and every single one of us are. You just said it right there... No one likes to be judge and that shouldn't be the reason why people cant come together to enjoy culture. I mean that is basically bullying. That's also a cultural issue that needs some attention and help. We start by car talk but by the end of it we are talking about feelings. This is a common thread of every single human being. I loved this. I don't own a Subaru but have in the past. I would say for the Director that he should have said what he did about Sofi in the beginning and then showed her throughout the film and then dropped the bomb about 9/10ths of the way through and then finished off on a positive note. I am sitting here with something in my eye.....I'm not crying you're crying!!!
Love the feedback, this is the second time we've heard this. The documentary was shot organically and the director Jan's story just came about towards the last half of the film. Sofi wasn't with us anymore during the packing gear scene was shot and where trying to bridge a time gap. Great, great feedback though. HAHA let it out, it's okay to show our feelings. The opening sequence isn't a rap, it was a poem our friend wrote whom is a Grammy award winning poet that speaks about community, coming together and what our manifesto stands for. I remember falling off a cliff, while mountain biking. I was chasing my buddy who had a similar bike, but he was a lot lighter and more agile. Ha I chased him down that mountain, and I fell off lol . He always beat me in a fwd Civic, vs my turbo 350z with an open diff, so the crashes were quite similar. This is why I have an STi, I'm apparently irresponsible lol

I have perhaps the greatest engineering miracle, the last one is the factory 2005 Imprezám Sport R... station wagon, which is starting to decline in the pursuit of cheaper production at all costs, so it doesn't want to go back and forth even without pipes and the second is just not a full-size tank it also fit laughingly in it, which is not just a crappy little 18-liter bottle, and what's even more laughable is that you can't even see where it is inside the interior, so the weight is as low as possible in line with its nose-centered engine, and it's only placed where it was intended it was just above the original one and this pose or constellation was kept very cleverly. 2.5 versions as well, but I really need the thickness of the material, because it can hold at least 1.5 bars more [!], so understandably I don't really want to drill it, because that would be an awful lot of bullshit on my part, since I need the block wall thickness so that it can remain meaty for all this.. but, I would also have to fill the gaps and it is likely that the pistons will have to be replaced, because SCANIAturBro goes into the Flying Vagina quite specifically and I use an air intake created with engineering precision to the point of intersection!5!5!5 Clean nitro (NOT!5!5!5 crappy nitromethane) can already run and get up and loves it, because for him it's just a really nice, clean fuel.. but a 13.5-SCANIAturBro will put so much pressure on my love that I have to look at what and how much he is asking, why, because mine knows everything I needed from the factory and we are impossibly attracted to each other, so I wouldn't ruin it because he also took care of me! There will be no bodykit abomination and apart from the mandatory diffuser system, no gay spoiler-ironing board abomination has been put into perspective, at most a small plexiglass spoiler with chrome pins, which may also get servomotors over time, but I don't like it if it is constantly squeezed apart from my vacuum... enough downforce is enough produces as much as it can. Especially if I'm visiting the rally site of the domestic matches, because even then it's best if 3 of the 4 wheels are on the ground at the same time and it's not exactly a fixed thing either.. in a straight line or when accelerating, why should I suck my poor SUBARUSama! He gets enough anyway..😅🤫🙂🫠🙃

Been owning rexies since my 1998 my99 WRX. Even back then subie owners were always friendly when passing each other. This is in Australia. Geuss the subie love and traditions have gone global.
Have own half a dozen other subies too. Owned a couple Evo's too but it wasn't the same. Neither was the driving.

I completely understand coming from a place with no snow. I have to go out of my way to get some decent snow. Hope we can expand to shoot in Canada soon!!
