- Jeff & Sarah check out the historic stone Marsh Mansion built by early California settler Dr. John Marsh and revisit the tragedies associated with the property near Vallejo. His wife dead, Marsh only was able to occupy his large three-story mansion for three weeks before he was murdered by his own ranch hands.

Me too. I a native No CA resident of 61 yrs. I've drove by this mansion but had no idea of it's history. This was interesting.
Exactly! I’m also native born Californian, lived in San Francisco and out on the SF Peninsula. I’d heard the Marsh name, was familiar with Indian AND Mexican raiders in part of our families history in the early to mid 1800’s. I did not know the story of Mr. Marsh and his family…..thank you. Oh, family history on my mother’s side; ranches in foothills Northeast of Merced, CA. , sometimes raided.

The marsh mansion once had a beautiful marble staircase-somehow it was stolen. I heard John marsh once overcharged a woman an excessive amount for his doctors fees,So the woman overcharged him for the washing of his laundry and his shirts

I lived in Richmond CA for 20 years. My wife and sisters used to go to Brentwood every summer to purchase fruit and vegetables to Can. I used to go through Brentwood to get to the Delta for Catfishing. We had friends that lived in Pinole, Crockett and Orinda. My late mother-in-law had a cousin that lived in Martinez.
All of the above said because all the time that we were in that area, this is the very first time I've heard this story about Dr. Marsh. Fascinating, I lived in an area that was ripe/rich in history and never knew it.

Thanks! Yeah, it's crazy how history is forgotten and neglected to be told to future generations. Marsh may have been a mean scoundrel but he was interesting and played a very significant role in the settlement and statehood of California! We appreciate your enjoyment of this history as we presented it!

Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. That mansion must have really been something in its grander years. I know you travel around California alot. I don't know if you have been in Dutch Flat ,California, but there is a old Hotel there it was built back in the 1800 you might be interested in. Dutch Flat is a small , old Gold Mining town up Highway 80 past Gold Run about Four miles. I grew up
Yes, BIDWELL'S!! It's amazing how Much land they all had back then....and native people were pushed aside. I lived in Klamath and got to know many of the natives of the area. Later we lived in Requa, my uncle was born there in 1900 and his family was one of the first to settle there, the Fehely family. His wife, my aunt Elizabeth, also taught Reagan in a one room school house. They passed in the late 60s.

The Errol Flynn "Robin Hood", was filmed at Bidwell Park in Chico. My grandfather worked for the local butcher who supplied the meat for the movie.

Just go to the Historical Society in Knightsen and ask for the key, they have access or know someone who does.

My family farmed in that area since 1917. We hunted for mushrooms and other wild foliage along Marsh Creek and one family farm bordered Marsh Creek Road. It is nice to see local stuff get some attention!
I grew up in Fairfield, California and I had never heard this story. I have heard of Webber because I lived in Stockton for a while. Thanks for this piece of history. Awesome video.

I don't like to pick favorites.... but, this episode was excellent!
Great episode Jeff and Sarah. I'm surprised that fence stopped Sarah because she's such a history hunter outlaw LOL. I love stopping and checking out those historical markers since they give you a glimpse of our history. I found one east of oakdale that was a failed stagecoach robbery where a woman was shot in the face with a shotgun and the bandit ran off empty handed and was never caught.

I live a couple of towns over from Martinez and have stopped by the monument. Until now I didn't know the whole story and plan to revisit it soon. Thank you for this bit of history not far from where I live.

Interesting story ! Love the old west stories......interesting to hear how those early settlers lived and died. A whole different time back then.
They mostly worked with what they had on hand. No Home Depot back then.
Come visit the west. I live in an old gold mining town, where they left the old structures (as opposed to Anaheim that tore everything down.). The history in my area is amazing.

I live in Southern California and have been thinking of visiting the Marsh Mansion, so thank you for posting this video! I've lived in Southern California for a few years, but am from Massachusetts, and attended High Scool in Dr. Marsh's home town of Danvers, Massachusetts.
You're right in my back yard. Never knew the story about March Creek Road. Brentwood is still a pretty rough place to live.

Absolutely enthralling. Great production Jeff! John Marsh lived in a brutal, lawless time. One had to be ruthless to survive.. that might excuse Dr. Marsh's character to a certain degree..

Born and raised in Antioch California left in 1997 never saw this place. I had heard of it. Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. My elementary school was Marsh Elementary school. There was a Kimball elementary school as well.

@@jbenziggy I think this has all the elements. William Brown Ide commander of the short lived California republic of 1846.
It includes pioneer cemetery with his grave and some other notables. The true ghost town of monroeville because nothing exists.
Also this town was the county seat of colusa and was outside of the county. Did this trip myself found it helpful to understand

I live in the town neighboring Pacheco and just visited the memorial sight with my kids over summer. Super interesting story. Also, your observations of Brentwood are spot on. Mini mansions under unsightly electrical lines!! I Renner just 30 years ago it was rolling hills and farms 😢

Don't hang out there to long tho, things didn't go so well for the people before you!! I'm in Chillicothe, Ohio. I've been out west once so it's fun to know the history of things I normally would hear nothing about! Chillicothe is known for thee outdoor drama "Tecumseh", if you ever get this far east! That is something you would enjoy. Til the next time, stay safe!

My mistake. I grew up in the town of Alta only a few miles East of Dutch Flat. I don't know the exact History of the Hotel but ,because you enjoy History soo much . I thought you might find it interesting. Happy History Hunting 😊

@@jbenziggy The actual address is , 32798 Main St. Dutch Flat california 95714. The phone # is 530-389-2698. They actually allow people to stay at the motel but it is real pricy. 1,400.00 dollars a night. Crazy I would say . LOL ! My Dad use to take us kids to Dutch Flat in the 70s for the 4th of July parade they would have. That was the closest town to where we lived that did anything for The 4th. Hope this helps you.
I live about 3 miles from the marsh house. He is quite the story. If you go down past the marsh house on marsh creek road about a mile on the left hand side you will see the foundation of the bunk house that serves as a temporary marsh house during construction

This is such an interesting story that brings up a few questions...Just how did they determine who were Dr. Marsh's murderers? and, .....Did the murderers come clean and give the fine detail as to what happened? Hi Russell, my understanding is Olivis came came clean when they found the stolen coins on him. He then spilled his guts when arrested. Thanks for watching the video!

I’m a direct relative of John marsh. His murder was warranted. The ranch hands were Native American slaves he kept in his basement as the family story goes.

We live near these locations. Interestingly we never knew that Dr Marsh was kind of a bad person.. and kind of brought on his murder. Locally we always heard the more glowing side of things. Thanks for enlightening us. And is a viewer mentioned in a posting above you should do one about the Bowers Mansion in Washoe Valley Nevada. Neat story.
