  • Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
The traditional classification of Tibetic languages includes three main branches:
Central Tibetan/Ü-Tsang is the most widely spoken Tibetic language and forms the basis of Standard/Lhasa Tibetan, which educated people speak in Lhasa, the capital of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. It is also the official language of the region.
Amdo Tibetan has two dialects, farmer and nomad. Amdo Tibetan speakers cannot communicate even at a basic level with those of the Ü-Tsang branch. The nomad dialect is closer to classical written Tibetan as it preserves word-initial consonant clusters and is non-tonal.
Khams Tibetan is predominantly spoken in the Kham region, both Khams and Lhasa Tibetan do not preserve word-initial consonant clusters, making them more divergent from Classical Tibetan compared to the conservative Amdo Tibetan.
This sample represents the standardized version to illustrate the differences in their pronunciation.
