Well of course CEX didn't know it was a fake ;) I personally think it's a very poorly run franchise, when you have to literally take pot luck if something works or not, is complete, is genuine..etc I can't stand the store and don't use them anymore after a couple of purchases that almost left me out of pocket becasue of their policy and staff ineptness. Dude the store is a joke, in my local cex they had two pokemon sapphire cartridges side by side in the display case one real one fake and I pointed it out, they denied it but the next dau the fake was gone... the kids they hire don't have a clue about retro. The place is a phone pawn shop.
Scan the barcode I done that on a Zelda box I thought was not right and turned out it was fake had the barcode for Pokémon yellow on it, people are crafty I tell you
That Donnie Brasco clip had me chuckling (nicely done 😂), and great detective work. Certainly looked too good to be true, which is a shame. It’s becoming far more common with boxed/ cartridge based games from CeX.
As soon as I saw the box and how shiny it was, it looked a tad too much. Also the colour was too vibrant, but I thought that could have been your colour correction in the video. I usually go by the card colour inside the box. There are a few that are different but if it seems off it usually is. I'm way to paranoid about repros now that I need to have some shelf wear on the item before I buy haha.
I agree with the shelf wear comment. A little bit of shelf wear is a good thing. With higher value games I also feel more confident buying off ebay, as it's clear when a collector is selling their collection. No voucher system though and you generally pay more.
@@Neo_Player I know it sucks to go full whack on the prices on eBay sometimes, especially when they end up sending stuff out in bad packaging, but sometimes it's just a less stressful way than the ol' cex roulette. At least cex are super easy to return to, if you live close enough to one that is. Posting back to them can be a tad risky, with things not making their way back to them and when your not face to face with someone it's easier for them to scrutinize if your sending back the correct item. I posted back some reprinted covers (before they stopped posting them out) and was met with a response of only store credit not my money back as they wouldn't have sent out fake covers. Was mad but was before any fuss was kicked up about it on TH-cam.

This is a multi-stage error. The person buying it in, the person labelling it, the person packing it for ecom, and the person taking the pictures - not even to mention the testers who likely opened it. Unfortunate that this happened, but hopefully the staff can be better trained and informed on fakes/repros.

Unfortunately it is a minefield when it comes to Nintendo cardboard. Not just CEX but ebay as well. When CEX started selling retro their gba stuff was rampant with fakes. Fortunately for collectors they were easy to spot but the average CEX employee just didn't know any better. They're more knowledgeable now but like you said mate these repros are getting more convincing all the time. I think what you fear may come to pass with CEX eventually deciding not to sell anything prior to the 32bit gen. I just don't see the average CEX employee caring enough to do a proper check. Especially since retro isn't even CEX's main money earner.
That's harsh man I know cex sell PS2 Wii Xbox advertised as repro covers but Nintendo cardboard that sucks hopefully you can find another copy clean real and at a decent price 👊
Sorry dude. That's rubbish. I went onto CEX once and almost bought a copy of Daze before Christmas. Then I noticed the Nintendo Seal of Quality was blue rather than gold. It does happen. Not CEXs fault kust bad luck really. They have always neen great with me and very accomodating with things like this
I know this video is going back a bit now but still gutted this happened to you. There's alot of these fake Nintendo boxes going round now. I don't collect for it but I've seen Repro boxes for these games online. It's not a good situation.
Definitely off Etsy that repro box. I have 3 repro boxes for some loose carts I got free with a Snes when I worked at GAME 20 yrs ago nobody wanted. Same grey cardboard and shinny inner tray. Suits my needs and for what they are they are very good. If I was to sell the games I would list as original cart/ repro boxes. Maybe they should have a different barcode on the back or no barcode?

I think the thumbnail was a big giveaway, but then I saw the condition on the box and thought straight away it may not be legit. A shame as the search for the Kirby subset continues, you’ll get it mate. Take it easy mate.
A few years back I had a fake Pokemon Soul Silver sent out. Having got the all the Pokemon games going back to Red/Green all the way to Scarlet/Violet I new instantly it wasn’t legit. I had a bit of trouble trying to get it refunded as the guy in the store was disputing it. In the end I had to take my copy of heart Gold in to show him what a real game looked like. It was sorted in the end and I managed to complete my Pokemon game collection.
Lets just hope the "replacement" boxes that get made now don't learn from this video, but going forward I think anything that has the Nintendo trademark on it and isn't manufactured by them should be banned on ebay and other sites, or at least just be made without the Nintendo logo to highlight it's a copy.
That's disappointing for you especially when it's one you have been wanting for awhile. Not an online order but when I was in my local cex they had pokemon emerald and fire red boxed which were both traded in together by someone and they turned out to be fake boxes.

I have received a fake cover repro from online CEX. Wii u zumba. Took it back to the store. The manual was Spanish and the cover was cut incorrectly but English repro. They took it back no issues but i was bummed. The receiving store just missed it.

What really gets me is the point you mention that someone out there has traded in that copy to CeX, probably knowing full well that it is essentially cart only and has received either the boxed price in cash or voucher from CeX. Whoever that is needs to get their morals in check. ☹️
Unfortunatly all hobbies suffer from greed once items become valuable. Its a learning curve and I am sure all collectors of various stuff have been stung at least once. Your gut was right though and we’ve all learnt a bit more, many thanks.

I was speaking with Mitch on a video of mine the other week, he was saying that the Retro Games element of CEX is a very low part of their business, like less than 5%. I cant validate that but I think because we use them all the time we think they are all about retro gaming whereas they are more likely about modern and electronics. Sad for us but true. I doubt the person who checked that in even knew about the fake elements. I had the exact same vibes as you on one of my recent SNES cex lottos but thankfully it turned out to be legit. Great pointers though on those two extra things to look for on the box, I've just scanned through all mine! 😅
Ah man I feel for you, you are right reproductions are becoming better and better unfortunately the snes is a victim of it’s own success because the games are becoming worth alot more fakes are becoming more common and mass produced and are getting better and harder to spot. There are a few companies out there now reproducing these boxes on eBay and Etsy which if your a collector that wants to tidy up their collection fine, it’s when people pay their hard earned money and get ripped off that’s the issue!! Ive recently bought two expensive unboxed SNES games online from CeX, Wild Guns & Castlevania: Vampire’s Kiss, both were reproductions and had to return them. Has completely put me off ordering the more expensive SNES games from them online. Edit: I will add, both were very clearly reproduction.
A few months ago my local CEX took in about 12-15 "mint/near mint" SNES and N64 games including a £500 Castlevania : Vampire's Kiss. All repro boxes! And not particularly good ones either. Once I told them, they sold whatever ones they had left by that point as unboxed so must have lost loads of money on them. What really annoyed me was that whilst some of the employees were clearly very gutted and desperately going through them hoping that some were genuine, one of the guys was just telling me that it's fine for them to sell them as it just says 'boxed', that doesn't mean that it has to be an original box. I was shocked and really struggled not to get into a full blown argument with the guy!

I would also expect a box that is in such good condition to still have the Nintendo seal of approval stickers on the opening flaps. Excellent video again and very educational. I bought a copy of Starwing from my regular store a couple of months ago, i doubted it was real but was assured by the owner and 2 staff members it was, i reluctantly decided to purchase it anyway. After seeing this video I'm sure it is real, the comments on the little bumps on the flaps was excellent advice and my copy had them. Everydays a school day. Thanks again RG If i were u I'd take it back and either get a full refund or ask them to treat it as unboxed and refund the difference. It can still look nice on your wall👍
I am surprised - when I traded in unwanted mega drive games they needed extra checks on one they sell for 65 pounds so would have expected this to be spotted due to it being an even more expensive game. If you haven't returned it wondering if they would reimburse and class as cart only like R Type 3- just a quick check shows the manual on Ebay by a seller with no bids yet - if you get the manual now and wait for a legit box it might save you money.
Appreciate you taking the time to highlight this unfortunate incident with the counterfeit SNES game. I will *DEFINITELY* be more cautious going forward.
Pointed out to my local shop that they had a fake on the shelf, heard of it happening a lot more in the last couple years. That sucks man would’ve been a great addition!

Second you opened it up my heart sank. I’ve got a legit copy and the pink on the box is way lighter than on your copy (matches the light pink sticker on the cart). Hope you find a good replacement. Happened to me with CEX too - ordered Turtles in Time on SNES which came with a shiny new box with a bunch of typos on it and a new inner tray. That wasn’t a cheap game either and the staff at the store I returned it to couldn’t care less, sent it back to the original shop and it was back up for sale shortly after.
That such shame fella that it turned out to be fake. sadly, (I'm sure your aware) CEX does have a history of reproduction in lay sleeves & boxes. Although I don't think your unfortunate case was the result of CEX trying to pull a fast one, someone took there time with that counterfeit. I absolutely love kirby super star! As a huge kirby fan its one of my favorites! I will also mention one if my favorite facts about it is how pal who made this also made smash bros and the control scheme and how the attacks work in this game went on to directly inspire the control scheme in the super smash bros series. Hopefully youre able to find a real copy soon!

Stickers and tattoos was a thing when I started ordering from cex about 10 years ago but they stopped doing them so I take it there started doing them again
We're just starting out with a SNES collection - the SNES I brought my lad came with 6 carts but no boxes. I like the idea of having them with boxes for display so was thinking of looking at reproduction boxes. My trail of thought is to case all games in additional protective plastic boxes with a small sticker in the corner on the plastic box to indicate if it contains a repo box or original so I'll (and any visitors) will always know.... What's the general consensus on repo boxes?
Suprised u haven't seen the CEX stickers before! They were all over the front desk of my local for ages at one point 😂 The problem is like you said, not many CeX staff are gonna know anything about SNES boxed games 😢 it was probably a younger person just serving the next dude wishing their shift was over already🧐😬
Gutting about the box not being legit! - I've seen repro carts in cex quite a while ago, my local one had took in Terranigma and wild guns!! you could see the labels were slightly off and the contacts slightly different, but they had been put into origional snes carts to look real. Last time I took a cart in they undid it to check the pcb.👍
Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. Cex may have some repro’s here and there, but, as an outfit, cex are still a really good place to purchase from, just need to be clued up. This could happen in any business that deals in retro gaming.

I have these situations with GBA cartridges. From now on everything gets opened.

It’s also worthwhile to open up the carts on more valuable releases, people have been known to put counterfeit boards into genuine shells.

Not sure if you have " Williams arcade greatest hits " that has a cheaper box on some versions. That can throw people off.

It's more of a severe crime to misrepresent (steal) a trademark than it is to rip off the game itself. Why they don't add the TM to the box.

A few months ago my local CEX took in about 12-15 "mint/near mint" SNES and N64 games including a £500 Castlevania : Vampire's Kiss. All repro boxes! And not particularly good ones either. Once I told them, they sold whatever ones they had left by that point as unboxed so must have lost loads of money on them. What really annoyed me was that whilst some of the employees were clearly very gutted and desperately going through them hoping that some were genuine, one of the guys was just telling me that it's fine for them to sell them as it just says 'boxed', that doesn't mean that it has to be an original box. I was shocked and really struggled not to get into a full blown argument with the guy!

I would also expect a box that is in such good condition to still have the Nintendo seal of approval stickers on the opening flaps.
Excellent video again and very educational. I bought a copy of Starwing from my regular store a couple of months ago, i doubted it was real but was assured by the owner and 2 staff members it was, i reluctantly decided to purchase it anyway. After seeing this video I'm sure it is real, the comments on the little bumps on the flaps was excellent advice and my copy had them. Everydays a school day. Thanks again RG
If i were u I'd take it back and either get a full refund or ask them to treat it as unboxed and refund the difference. It can still look nice on your wall👍

I am surprised - when I traded in unwanted mega drive games they needed extra checks on one they sell for 65 pounds so would have expected this to be spotted due to it being an even more expensive game. If you haven't returned it wondering if they would reimburse and class as cart only like R Type 3- just a quick check shows the manual on Ebay by a seller with no bids yet - if you get the manual now and wait for a legit box it might save you money.
Appreciate you taking the time to highlight this unfortunate incident with the counterfeit SNES game. I will *DEFINITELY* be more cautious going forward.
Pointed out to my local shop that they had a fake on the shelf, heard of it happening a lot more in the last couple years. That sucks man would’ve been a great addition!

Second you opened it up my heart sank. I’ve got a legit copy and the pink on the box is way lighter than on your copy (matches the light pink sticker on the cart). Hope you find a good replacement. Happened to me with CEX too - ordered Turtles in Time on SNES which came with a shiny new box with a bunch of typos on it and a new inner tray. That wasn’t a cheap game either and the staff at the store I returned it to couldn’t care less, sent it back to the original shop and it was back up for sale shortly after.
That such shame fella that it turned out to be fake. sadly, (I'm sure your aware) CEX does have a history of reproduction in lay sleeves & boxes. Although I don't think your unfortunate case was the result of CEX trying to pull a fast one, someone took there time with that counterfeit. I absolutely love kirby super star! As a huge kirby fan its one of my favorites! I will also mention one if my favorite facts about it is how pal who made this also made smash bros and the control scheme and how the attacks work in this game went on to directly inspire the control scheme in the super smash bros series. Hopefully youre able to find a real copy soon!

Stickers and tattoos was a thing when I started ordering from cex about 10 years ago but they stopped doing them so I take it there started doing them again

We're just starting out with a SNES collection - the SNES I brought my lad came with 6 carts but no boxes. I like the idea of having them with boxes for display so was thinking of looking at reproduction boxes. My trail of thought is to case all games in additional protective plastic boxes with a small sticker in the corner on the plastic box to indicate if it contains a repo box or original so I'll (and any visitors) will always know.... What's the general consensus on repo boxes?
No issue myself, collect however you wish, the issues come when people try to pass them as genuine

The problem is like you said, not many CeX staff are gonna know anything about SNES boxed games 😢 it was probably a younger person just serving the next dude wishing their shift was over already🧐😬

Gutting about the box not being legit! - I've seen repro carts in cex quite a while ago, my local one had took in Terranigma and wild guns!!
you could see the labels were slightly off and the contacts slightly different, but they had been put into origional snes carts to look real.
Last time I took a cart in they undid it to check the pcb.👍

The best way to get around these CEX issues would be to purchase from an independent retro game store.
Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. Cex may have some repro’s here and there, but, as an outfit, cex are still a really good place to purchase from, just need to be clued up. This could happen in any business that deals in retro gaming.
