    For those asking "what if this happened to humans?", it does. Approximately 1 in 40,000 of them. It's a rare neuromuscular disorder called Hyperekplexia (also known as startle syndrome). My son has it and it is not at all funny. It is also caused by a genetic mutation. Not sure what started it in the goats, but it fits the same description as what humans have.

    Some of the mutations are recessive and some are dominant. The mutations don't usually die out because the recessive mutations are just that, recessive, and so can travel from generation to generation without being noticed until it meets up with another recessive mutation.
    Even the dominant mutations don't usually die out because of partial penetrance, meaning some people just aren't severely affected by it.

    • @rattlingtotheend
      @rattlingtotheend 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      yes it does... he was implying these goats evolve naturally, their mere existence proving darwinian laws wrong (natural selection and such) BUT as I already said they were bred for this purpose, making them a product of artificial selection so... yeah, you can't possibly prove Darwin was wrong with goats nor with anything for that matter xD

    • @user-qx9zn2cj4e
      @user-qx9zn2cj4e 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think he meant they wouldve been extinct hundreds if not thousands of years ago, according to darwin. surely they cant survive in the wild. only possible explanation would be if they developed that trait after humans started to breed them in farms, which still wouldnt make sense cause why would they need this trait..
      im not saying darwin is wrong, im just stating what it is.

    • @rattlingtotheend
      @rattlingtotheend 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      some harmful traits asleep for generations tend to emerge due to high rates of inbreeding and this trait is actually helpful to farmers as I already explained, put these goats on a sheep heard and if wild dogs come, these goats will faint, making them an easier (and less expensive) prey, thus, the farmer does not loose any sheep

    Noticed that some people are confused about how it helps the goat (or at least enough for it to survive this long).
    Well, the truth is...it doesn't. Unless I'm mistaken, they were bred to do this in order to keep sheep (or more expensive animals) safe when predators like wolves attacked. The wolves come, the sheep flee while the fainting goats faint and get eaten by the wolves (or whatever predators there is).

  • @griffin86666
    @griffin86666 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    1. Would you not say they breed these goats to keep the Myotonia congenita trait?
    2. I didn't say that it was artificial because they use it save the more expensive animals. I said the purpose of them fainting is.
    3. I did quote from wiki to save time, but in the biology classes I have taken, they have explained the reasoning.
    4. Wouldn't you say most of all domestic animals would be from selective breeding?

    No its not. Please do some research.
    "Artificial selection (or selective breeding) describes intentional breeding for certain traits, or combination of traits. The term was utilized by Charles Darwin in contrast to natural selection, in which the differential reproduction of organisms with certain traits is attributed to improved survival or reproductive ability"

  • @KonigsTigger1
    @KonigsTigger1 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some "predators" are also opportunistic scavengers and have no problem feeding off a carcass. I believe the reason these goats have survived natural selection is because they tend to live in a herd. All of the goats are capable of fainting, however that doesn't mean that all of them would faint at the same time if startled. The ones that do faint will fall to predators while the ones that don't faint can flee while the predator(s) preoccupied with the ones that fainted.

    Not at all. This was a random mutation that cropped up in an already domestic goat breed--one of the very basics for evolution is that genetic reshuffling sometimes causes random mutations. Yes, a mutation this detrimental would be fatal in a wild animal, but some enterprising farmer realized that they make wonderful decoys for predators of sheep herds. Artificial selection favored this trait entirely because they're so easy for predators to catch.

    @miamiwadecounty§ Actually, that's why they were bred. You keep one with your sheep, if a wolf comes the sheep run away, the goat keels over, the wolf takes the goat, the goat takes one for the team (terminally), and the flock escapes to safety.

    Because toenails are claws if we train them to be. Thus evolving, this is exactly as I called it, I looked it up they were breed this way so they wouldn't be able to run away

    Actually it's really ingenious. When they faint they appear dead to predators...and most animals won't eat something that's already dead.
