    A little off topic but I’ve found a way to repurpose my wash tests is to make cards out of them to send to people. It’s kind of like a little eclectic thing and no two are the same. I’ve even added on drawings on top or little added things glued to them.

    oh! I love ultramarine mixes, the way the pigment kinda settles out of the mix as it dries creates really beautiful tonal shifts tht i like to use in skin tones! Also, the subtle granulation of ultramarine in mixes is something i noticed Turner doing in his later watercolor works! He used it in cloudy skies to show shades of blue sky showing through clouds really lightly, I hadn't considered using it for tht before, but it was really effective and beautiful!

    I am one of those people who just wants all the colors. 6 colors feels so restricting to me and its sooooooooo hard to stick to that number lol but I can do it if I must. (Typically I use 10 to 12 colors in one piece). I think what you said about having a very specific purpose is super helpful. Sometimes it has taken me several months to finally settle on a limited color palette and even then I had to give myself a little wiggle room and went with 8 colors. There is nothing that can replace the time spent playing around and getting to know the pigments you have. That is how you learn what you like, what you don't like, and how to mix colors.

    I find that the Mijello paints really don't flow into each other that well. I struggle to get them to move on the page, and some papers really exacerbate that issue and the paints feel like they sit on top of the paper. I sometimes use a synthetic oxgall if I want a classic flowy watercolor look, just to help the paints move, but even then they don't flow like my paints from other brands.

    also with the Fabriano(I think?) paper, it might have a type of sizing tht doesn't work well with honey based watercolors, have you tested other brands tht use honey on it? (like Qor or Sennelier?) Sugar can change the way pigment absorbs into paper (and stop it entirely if theres enough) so i wouldn't be surprised if other honey based watercolors acted the same way!

    What you said about not using DS paints often bc you like them so much and don't want to get addicted to them bc people are annoyed by that...what do you mean by that? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Why wouldn't you use paints that you like? Isn't that the goal? To find a paint that you like?

    • @VictoriaGedvillas
      @VictoriaGedvillas  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      LeighAnneNight Art you’re right! That is the goal! A lot of my subscribers are unable to get Daniel smith or its too expensive in their country. They get upset if I were to use them too much and request I use something else. You’re right though, use paints that you like

    • @leighannenight
      @leighannenight 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm sorry. That's very sweet of you to be so considerate of your subscribers. As someone who started out with very cheap paints out of necessity/lack of resources, I get it but you have shown so many times on your channel that your materials do not dictate your skill. Yes, sometimes they can make it more of a challenge (which in my opinion can be a good thing bc it helps with learning problem solving in a composition) but should never stop one from making art altogether. I don't think that using cheaper supplies will stop anyone from learning from a person using high quality supplies. I could go on and on about this! I'm trying to say with tact but I for one would love to see you working with the supplies that make you feel free and happy!

    Great video again! I have to say, I really enjoy watching other artists choose their colours, because every artist obviously has different needs and preferences, so it'll always end up unique (My six colour choice from the 36 mission gold set that I have would probably be something like lemon yellow py3, ultramarine pb29&pv15 (sooooo granulating!) , "cerulean blue" pb15:3, the pv 19 (permanent rose I think?) ^^, red brown (?) the pbr 25 and either one of their more opaque oranges or olive green (love that colour) - just in case someone is interested ^^`)
    I would love some triad experiments maybe in a future video, because they always help me to get to know the paints in a new way, and your take on that would be very interesting to watch.

    hello tori, I'm new to watercolors. May I ask if I am seeing this video correctly? So the big difference for mission gold is that the paints dont meld into each other and create a nice automatic gradient blend where as daniel smith does so naturally?

    • @alexiayoung1225

    Doesn't the Daniel Smith being more "addictive" and "enjoyable" and "useful on many papers" just make them BETTER? Whats wrong with admitting they are better? Whats wrong with using the best supplies? Answer: nothing. Its ok that one supply is superior. Its ok to use the best supplies that you find "addictive" and "easy" and "more enjoyable". Why force yourself to use another paint if you find it lower on quality, ease of use and flexibility? Its like your afraid to hurt the paints feelings or something? I think its admirable to use what you bought IF its still fun or specifically to do art challenges. Its also equally ok to admit one thing is preferred for you and not use something inferior. Its likewise ok to admit the Fabriano paper is not as good in your experience and simply to stop using it if you don't enjoy the results. Yes giving it another go and checking if a different technique works better is also nice sometimes too, but there needs to be a limit on that as well sometimes. Not wasting money you invested is another concern I understand. As an example; I was trying to force myself to use up my Cotman paints before replacing colours with artist grade, and instead gave in and replaced them AND I still I feel WAY better after ditching my Cotman watercolours! They were bad, inferior! I enjoy and use other, better paint now and I can create easier and get WAY better results. I enjoy painting much more! Now I feel free to admit the cotman paints are inferior to many other paints and I don't enjoy them nor recommend them. Also you deserve to use the good stuff! Everyone does, ESPECIALLY a PROFESSIONAL making their livelihood! But hey just my observation and opinion.
