    I've been using the Mijello 36 color set for a couple months now and I LOVE THEM (in fact, so much so that I have bought another set!). Although people complain that some of the colors aren't single pigment, I never really get muddy mixes and I mix colors a LOT. Also, just to play devil's advocate to the people complaining about single pigment stuff, Holbein is another excellent brand of watercolors that often contains white (PW6) in their paints but no one seems to be giving too much criticism on that, so why hate on the Mijello? At least they are transparent about the pigments used and everything (both Mijello and Holbein). The Mijello paints are my favorite to use since they rewet beautifully, the vast majority of the paints are lightfast, they are super vibrant, and one stroke of these paints can be equivalent to multiple layers of other similar quality professional paints. Plus they're super affordable for such good paints. My paints weren’t runny really at all but yours may have been because they've been sitting for too long. For the price of these 36 tubes and the palette (which is awesome by the way), you may only be able to get a few tubes of other professional brand paints. Also, to answer your inquiry on the Indigo color, I just double checked with my swatch chart and your Indigo is fine. Another thing to note is the vibrancy of the paints. A fun fact about these paints are that you can mix them with a little bit of titanium white gouache to use them as gouache! So as well as working wonderfully as watercolors, these double up well as a gouache (I mix it with a little bit of titanium white designer's gouache by Winsor Newton). I genuinely believe that you'll enjoy using these paints as they are great in every way :) Have fun!

      True. Mijello, holbein, and shinhan are sooo underrated. I love paul rubens too. Their prices are reasonable for such quality wc.

      Fun fact! The 34 set on amazon, the asian set, is the same color selection as the 36 set, just without the white and black. Dunno if it’s useful now, but I figured maybe someone would find it handy!

    When you showed the "indigo" swatch, I almost thought you had a black and white filter over it until you put down the ivory! it's so intriguing how every brand's colors are different

    I’m getting close to my four year anniversary with my 36 tube Mijello Mission Gold set! The indigo is a very dark indigo, and it’s more like a cool black. I used it so much that I starting using other colors as a substitute (like mixing prussian blue and Daniel Smith indanthrone blue with a complement), because I don’t want to run out and buy a new tube lol. It was my go-to black and created a lot more interest in my work than ivory black; it would be a great color for a monochromatic painting without going too blue.
    I was so excited to see this video about these paints and I’m so excited to see your next one!

      I had the same experience with the indigo and use it in the same way. I have an ivory black from a different brand, but rarely use it, simply because of how well the indigo functions as a cool black. It was quite disappointing as a first experience with indigo, however, and I finally picked up an indigo from W&N. It was really cool to see a true indigo and compare it with Mijello's indigo.

    Your tube of Indigo is fine, Mijellos Version just isn’t an actual Indigo. I was kinda disappointed back when I first swatched mine but treating it as a Payne's Gray is fine^^

    I use Mijello Mission Gold single pigment watercolors and I absolutely loooove them. I think you'll like them, they rewet beautifully and are so vibrant. I've been meaning to do a video on them, but haven't had the chance to unfortunately. Yeah, they're great!

    • @VictoriaGedvillas

      Do you favor the single pigments over the multi- pigment offerings?

    • @ocrionbunny4543
      @ocrionbunny4543 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@VictoriaGedvillas I haven't used the multi-pigment ones. I bought the single pigment set on ebay for a class and I fell in love IMMEDIATELY. I've had so much fun painting with them, they feel like butter! They don't make mud, instead they make dimensional shades and depending on how much you mix a couple of shades together, the single pigment with show through different parts of a wash. I really should make that video soon. Maybe this week.

      Hi Ocrion, do these dry down fully in pans or do they never fully set/feel sticky? :) I want to buy the pure pigment set and make my own palette haha. Thanks in advance!

    • @ocrionbunny4543
      @ocrionbunny4543 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dakotahjadee Hello, dakotahjadee, some of them dry down complete, others stay a bit tacky which is what makes them so easy to rewet. I would not recommend them as a travel or plein air set if you live somewhere very humid because they might make a mess. I do recommend these for an at home set up and of course if you live in a drier environment. I'm still considering making a video about them soon. I just get so nervous

    I highly recommend using a safety pin to stick inside the open top of the tubes to stir inside and mix up the pigment and binder in each tube BEFORE filling any pans with them. This made everything so much better and easier for me.

    I treated myself to a small set of them and made a mini travel palette from them because I commuted on the train. I love them! I don't use them as often as I really want to, because I don't commute by train anymore and on the go was when I had the most time to paint. I do enjoy pulling them out whenever I do paint, because they are as close to artist-grade paints I have gotten.

    To be honest, I’ve been waiting so long for you to do an unboxing/review of the Mijello Mission Gold. They’re my absolute FAVORITE watercolors to use and I’m really happy to hear you love them too!
    When I first got my set and began swatching, I also found it strange that Indigo turned out to be a Payne’s Gray. But I couldn’t stay mad at the mislabeling because the color was so rich and creamy, it became my top to use for value studies.
    I can’t wait to see what else you’ll be painting for Sketchbook Habit!

    Mijello's Indigo totally looks like this. It's interesting that you noted some people find this set difficult to mix with, because I find it really easy to mix with. This is a really fun set.

    • @elaurielle2521
      @elaurielle2521 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk when i saw another videos about mijello, many ppl don't like it bcs it's hard to mix, is it fine for mixing the color like you said?

    • @bossgoose177
      @bossgoose177 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elaurielle2521 I find it really easy to mix. I think it may also depend on your familiarity with color theory/pigments as well. It may very well be that if I had picked up this set when I was new to watercolors, I may have found it more frustrating, but I mostly find it mixes how I expect it to, and because the colors are so vibrant, it's easier (for me) to get the balance on mixes that I want than it would be with other popular, but less poppy, sets. I started off learning watercolor with a Cotman set, so this was a TREAT by comparison. I think if you're new to watercolor, you're probably better off betting a basic six color set and learning color theory, but if you're more familiar with color theory/mixing, and particularly if you're drawn to these really bold colors, it's a really fun set to work with.

    I have been using the Mijello pure pigment set for over 2 years now. Still in love with the bright colors, the consistency and how easy they rewet. This set seems great too, the mixes seem beautiful. I particularly love their ultramarine (almost out of it), perylene maroon and quin rose!

  • @haileestudios7161
    @haileestudios7161 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't been able to experiment much with these watercolors, but I did notice one thing. Depending on the paper you use, sometimes the watercolor outline is a lot more harsh, like on the Canson watercolor sketchbook especially. It makes it a little difficult to do line art (inking and colored pencil) because the watercolor likes to make its own harsh lines. And when I reactivate them on the paper, I have to make sure the water is evenly dispersed or it will make that harsh line again. This, of course, could just be my preference since I do more figure illustrations with flatter colors than I do with textures.
    I also use the paul ruben's sketchbook, and the watercolors laid down a lot nicer on that paper, and I find pleasure in mixing the colors (especially the more saturated ones). They're really nice watercolors, my only suggestion is to experiment with different paper brands and decide by preference

    I bought this palette about a year ago and I am really in love with the brand ever since than. My indigo that came with the set was actually a lot more blue, so maybe they changed the formular a bit? Well after playing around with this 36 introductary set, I splurged on the single pigment set and some additional colours I enjoy because my local artshop started stocking the Mission gold tubes. I just love their vibrancy and pigmentload and the single pigment earth colours are more traditional and what you would expect from earthy watercolours. Yeah, so have fun with this set!

  • @Gooseandghostknits
    @Gooseandghostknits 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the same set and the indigo is the same way in mine. I was shocked when I swatched it, it wasn't what I had expected at all & I thought I had squeezed out double of the black. But I've grown to really love the option of having a warm and cool toned black in the palette even though I so rarely use black in my paint mixtures. I personally really love this set. I don't use it as often as some of my other paints but when I do reach for it I'm always happy with it. And even though a lot of the earth toned colors are multi-pigment mixes I really love the look they give off. Especially those earthy yellows ugh yes love them. They're really unique and I don't think I've come across the same hue or tone anywhere else

    I LOVE THESE PAINTS! They’re so pigmented I’ve had the same set of 24 tubes for the last five years and haven’t replaced a single color. Don’t worry about the paints being liquidy, that’s just part of their formula! I think if ur anything like me they’ll become one of your favorite paints, although I’m not ENTIRELY sure bc I have the pure pigment set and so some of the things that are really cool ab ur set like that opera rose, are things I’m not privy to. But the thing about having strange color names vs pigments is something I don’t have to worry about.

    I got the mijello mission gold Permanent Magenta (PR122) and it’s absolutely gorgeous!😍 I do have some issues with the paint not taking to the paper very well (white speckling when the paint dries), but it was fine on the Mossery sketchbook paper and I’ve heard it’s better on hp paper. I don’t know if you have noticed it with any of your paints so far, but just wanted to let you know about that.
    I really like using the Fabriano Studio cp paper. Though, the paint can sometimes pool in the wide valleys of the paper when painting wet-in-wet, which can be an undesirable effect. I hope you enjoy using the paper!😊
    Thanks for the video and looking forward to your next one!💕

    Nice palette setup, I really enjoyed to watch this. The Mijello colours are indeed very bright, but they mix nicely - at least what I know from the pure pigment set. This is why I can't say anything about the weird indigo, but I think Oto Kano made a comparison of many indigo colours and the Mijello one was black in her comparison as well. So this is their "normal" indigo colour it seems.
    I'll be checking this, as I have the swatch cards.
    Great video and a cute illustration in the end! :)

    Mijellos are actually some of my favorite watercolor paints. As you said, they're not in the upper echelons of fine art grade like Schmincke or Daniel Smith but for my illustrative needs, they're just fine. I'm one of those artists who appreciate vibrant, non-granulating colors. I've heard others in the past bring up the fact that the typical Mission Gold set contains lots of mixes and convenience colors, but the company also has a pure pigment set to address that very issue.

    mijello was my first intro into professional paints i loved them at the time and theres still moments where i look back on colors that i love from the brand like the ophera. might even put a half pan in my studio palette as a guilty pleasure lol

    im excited to hear your thoughts!! the 24 mjellos were my first professional grade watercolors and ive loved them for the past 4-5 years. i heard they tend to dry the color they were swatched as and not lighten up when dry like other paints in reviews which caught my attention back in the day. ive personally never had any major mixing troubles with them before, but i hope you enjoy giving them a shot ❤️

    I got Mijello and tried it for the first time to test a new dagger brush, but the result wasn't what I was expecting. Was not happy about that, the colors didn't go well with a dry color and then another wet on top of a different color... (was trying to do flower petals in varied colors). I was not happy that I couldn't get any nice effects, even the new color on top hardly showed. But the next day I decided to actually do a painting with this brand and give it a proper chance. All I can say is WOW, I found how to use this paint correctly, differently than my other brands. The color was so vibrant and as long as I painted with different colors on the white paper and not really on top of already painted area (unless it is mostly pure and not diluted paint), it was perfect. Why? The paint is soooo vibrant that it dominates any second colors added. Knowing this my painting came out gorgeous! It is my most eye catching painting I have so far and I love it! I want to paint again tomorrow!! Sparks my colorful imagination ❤️ There is a bit of a learning curve if you use other paints like Sonnelier, like me, as they are sooooo different. But it is a good thing to have variety.

    I think from the many many watercolors I own my mission gold pallete is my comfort zone. I bought the 12 color pallette to start with (because it's SO CUTE, and PINK) and after using them I had to buy more colors! Whenever I feel like I can't do art with my other pallettes this is the one that inspires me always!
    I wish they would sell the pink an grey pallettes they have seperately, because I would use them for everything

    It seems very common in Asian watercolor brands (Mijello, Holbein, Kuretake) to have "fancier" names for colors in comparison to the use of chemical names in Western brands (e.g peacock blue = pthalo blue). That and Asian watercolors also seem to have more opaque colors (more mixes with white). I think it's just that they're used in a different way than western watercolor brands that focus more on glazing and single pigments.
    And your paints being runny is totally normal they're made with honey so they should always be slightly tacky, at least my Sennelier paints have never dried completely (this winter was very humid so they got even stickier and got everywhere in my palette). Honey is a natural humectant so it'll always be absorbing the water in the air, so paints will never set up completely like Daniel Smith or W&N, the plus side is they are super easy to reactivate.

    I bought these for their brightness, but also to try a watercolor brand with LESS flow. I learned to paint watercolors with QoR. As you can imagine, QoR paints do not behave like most watercolors. Their flow is EXTREME. I love my QoR paints. But after a while, I did want to purchase paints that stayed where I put them and were able to use lifting techniques with. (QoR doesn’t lift)
    It’s been five months since I purchased this palette and it has been an adjustment!
    I shift away from the mission gold for a long time because every time I used them, they behaved in ways that I didn’t want them to. I had cauliflowers/blooms EVERYWHERE, and my glazes were never clean because the paint lifts TOO easily.
    Now that I have gotten to know these paints better, we are best friends!! I’ve accepted the blooms. If I wasn’t willing risk a bloom, I couldn’t have used my QoR, M. Graham or Daniel Smith paints. But I didn’t. Therefore, I must accept these mission gold paints as they are and for the properties they come with. I actually enjoy my blooms now. Lol
    And I’ve learned to layer without lifting. It’s so much fun to experiment.

    I own this set. It takes FOREVER to dry. It took weeks and it's been a month or two since I got them and they are still squishy. My house is dry too, so it's not like the humidity is affecting them. They are made from honey, so that explains it. I like this set. It's a lot better than my previous set, which was ShinHan Watercolours.

  • @JessicaLynnIllustration

    I have this same set and it's hard to tell from the video but my Indigo is a very dark blue that almost looks black but has a blue tinge, yours looks a little more black on the screen then my swatch of it. I was surprised you compared them to Prima Marketing paint sets. I have a few of those sets myself, but thought the Mission Gold was a better grade then them - I'd be interested in more of your thoughts on this 🙂

    I used to have 1 but I gave the pallet away to another kid who really into art but she really couldn't afford since she still in her middle school. but I kept the tubes thou.. XD these can last like forever. they do have the pure pigment set that I own as well .. and a gouache set .. XD.. I kind of obsess with mijello because the color so bright and vibrant and really easy to active .
    btw mine indigo look the same, I don't even notice until you point it out. I have this set for more than 2 - 3 years now

      @Shmorle I know I'm about year late on this video, and don't know where you live. But wanted to tell you about another good brand to try that is fairly new on the market. I bought them a couple months ago. I believe they are made it China. They are the ArtWhale watercolor tubes on Amazon. Here in US I got them for $32 for a set of 24, so about half the price of this set. Still waiting on light-fast results, but they are so fun to paint with, rewet easily, and vivid colors as well. Pigment info is a little wonky, but they do list all of it on the tube. they perform as well as all of my other professional watercolors, and I have quite a few well known brands. This mijello set should be delivered this weekend. I got a gently used set off Mercari. Hence why I am just now watching this review. Lol

    My prediction is that you will love all but the browns (once you get over the weird naming system they use.) I have them in pans and they re-wet beautifully and are very saturated. The don't spread like QoR though, so probably best for people who like realistic painting over loose.

    I LOVE Mission Gold, I've been using them for 2 years and I've collected 51 colors so far! 💕 My indigo is the same, and it definitely caught me off guard, but I think it's beautiful and I treat it as a black in my palette. I don't have a ton of mixing issues with them, since I do have their pure pigment set in my mix, but some blends are weird. I do think their naming requires you to do some research before buying colors thought. The Gamboge is the most disappointing color I've collected from them. I don't under stand why it's so opaque, with 3 pigments (one of which is a brown), and zero luminosity to it.
