I use toothpicks when I'm filling pans. Wastes way less paint than mixing with anything else.

I use toothpicks for mixing my resin for that reason
I use straightened small size paper clip, less paint would stick to thin metal than on thicker toothpicks.

yellow is my favorite color, always has been. Cannot quite understand how people can hate yellow. It is a primary and used to mix with almost everything.
A Dingus Draws i feel like green is actually more underrated (except for landscape painters ofc) i love greens but i only like it as a color and not anything else (like fav color for paintings, clothing and such) if that makes sense. I understand that green look sick sometimes and me myself is scared to use it as the main scheme in my own painting as well.

If you haven't made it already, I would love to see a video about what you like so much about naples yellow, and how you use the colour. I'm really interested since it's a pretty unusual colour to love, and I would love to better understand what you see in it❤️
How To Mix Watercolour Paints.(My Basic Palette Colours) Tips and Techniques on Mixing: Anne Kerr Art Studio. In this video she talks about Naples Yellow @ the 20:00 minute mark. Sorry to include another artist- . but it is interesting. She is using a Windsor and Newton Naples Yellow and says it does not react (blend) like other Naples Yellow brands and points out Naples Yellow is Opaque- and to keep it separate from other paints if you go for transparency in you watercolors.
That’s so funny- that Winsor and Newton crimson is also the only paint I still use from them 😂 I love their gouache but I find their watercolors to be dull compared to DS. But that crimson is lovely :)

Wow, that's so interesting!! I totally agree about W&N. I've mostly not been very impressed with their paints, but that one color is SO nice.

what exactly is it about windsor & newton's watercolours that make it not particularly great?¿
Oh, their Cobalt Violet and Transparent Orange (more vivid than Daniel Smiths Transparent Pyrrol Orange) are awesome as well! I'm also partial to their Winsor Red, since it glows more than the reds from Daniel Smith, and is slightly warmer than that pyrrol red. Am exploring their Permanent Carmine too, which is beautiful and intense albeit a bit streaky. Almost forgot the Yellow Ochre and Gold Ochre as well! They are great. Oto Kano has a Colossal Color Showdown on yellow ochre. And the Gold Ochre really has a sheen to it. Worth checking out! (Other than that I mostly have other brands, many colors from Daniel Smith.)
honestly i need a warm and cool of each color along with yellow ocher, burnt umber white and black.
Fantastic video. I just bought a ridiculous amount of paints (28 tubes) because my local art supply store was having an annual sale. And, of course, the Daniel Smith rep was there on Saturday (a total enabler), with a bunch of paper, brushes and a huge bag of tubes of paint for people to sit down and try. I played for almost an hour, and then had to go home and swatch everything out. It took me hours, and then, of course, I had to go back on Sunday, and buy some more colors to fill out areas of color that I had neglected. What a JUNKIE I am, though I guess there are worse addictions to have. Anyway, found you through Denise and you are great! Thanks thanks thanks!
Skillshare looks pretty amazing but I don't have the means to keep up with it. I mean the two months is cool but afterwords I won't have it cause I can't pay for it so. I have to stick with TH-cam for now
A lot of the classes on there are less than hour long, in two months you can learn a lot from there even if you don't continue with it!

I think skillshare might be worth it, however you must have a credit card. I honestly think it's kind of stupid that they don't accept paypal. In Europe it's not that common for people to have a credit card. So no skillshare for me...

@@louetkeWell it's kind of difficult to explain but let me try at least. There is a difference to a credit card in (for example) America or Europe. In Europe we all get a card from the Bank at which you have your bank account. With that card we pay everything (including health care, groceries, utility bills etc. although some are abviously withdrawn automatically by the government). A creditcard in America is a card which can be used as a method of payment but the money is being taken from you at a later time, usually with interest. We don't have those, unless you want one and you can apply for one.
I hope you understand what I mean ;) It still sucks though that I can't go to skillshare because I don't have the right card. Oh I'm from the Netherlands by the way!
Beautiful selections! I like to decant my paint into pans or half pans rather than into a palette, because I can then easily change them out of a portable palette and experiment. But a nice open palette like this is soooo inviting... I may have to actually commit and set another up.
Me too! As much as I love having pans, they take too much of your time to fill

I agree that pans allow for a lot of flexibility! I've grown to VASTLY prefer working with paint out of wells, though. Especially with my larger brushes!
I think we both know me long enough to know that I'm a big fan of custom watercolor palettes, so I'm hype that you've made yourself a new setup! It's soooo pretttttyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Part of the reason that I made my palettes easy to swap paints in and out is for exactly the reasons you talked about; worrying that you'll have chosen too many colors that are pretty but don't work together, worrying you'll have missed a color you really need or like, etc etc. That's why so many of my palettes are easy to both adjust the paints as well as the color chart without having to jus totally rip apart everything.
Also, undersea green is soooo goooooooodddddd.

Thank you so much for sharing your skill with us all. I appreciate the time you have devoted for free. I am sorry for some of the remarks about how many paints you have and such. You explain at the very beginning that you are given many to try out, and some are gifted to you. I feel it's none of my business how many you have or how you got them or who will get them in your will. I'm just thankful that you are sharing your knowledge and are willing to answer our questions. I'm 68 and don't have that many tubes, but I'm getting them one or more at a time. I'm not jealous of you(even though I too would like to have more} I'm happy you have them and they make you happy and you are giving freely your gift of knowledge to us. Thanks again.
I do a square where one time I use colour 1 more than colour 2 and vice versa. I also make the boxes bigger and create a gradient to see what the paint looks like watered down
Same. It's eye-opening to see how dramatic the difference in color can be when you change the balance of colors in a mix!
Personally I need to have transparent Brown oxide by Daniel smith. It's never missing from my palette.

I do botanicals and I ADORE sap green. I use Winsor & Newtons, but I haven't played around with a huge amount of brands. I just find it behaves so well and I feel like every green I mix with it is so dimensional

I love my blues and lavands, so in every palette i MUST have at least one blue and one red hahaha
Besides that i keep my colors very cool toned and keep everything on that cool blue~cool green area.

Thank you so much for this amazing video! I really appreciated all of the advice you gave, and watching the swatches as you talked about colors was exactly what I have needed after a long week of working retail and traveling around. I especially loved the scene where you sprayed water into the circles of color on the palette. It was so magical and calming to watch the colors bleed.
for colours i know get muddy easily i usually have two wells for them, so two white, two yellow, etc, that way you’ve always got a clean version

My must-have colours are Transparent Yellow by Sennelier, Quinacridone Purple by Schmincke and Perylene Maroon, also by Schmincke
Quinacridone Pink or a similar colour is very much a staple in my colour palettes. I'm currently going through and creating my own palette and realised I love very bright and vibrant tones that can be neutralised down. Even my more earthy tones are going to be brighter using things such as green gold, quinacridone gold etc. I am loving Denise's class so much!
Thank you so much for the tips on creating the color sheet. I’ve used the method of creating enough small pools for each of the colors I’m mixing it with so many times now!

I loved watching this, you were really generous with information as always and I agree in liquid color has the best information on pigment it’s always fun to watch her videos! Just a little tip for colors that separate when pouring you can mix them with a tooth pick or a pin it works really well without wasting paint.

I'm so glad to see Cascade Green made it to your perfect palette! It's an amazing color, that no matter how I try to mix the two pigments together from separate tubes of PBr7 and PB15 I just can't make them create the same magic as Daniel Smith's mixture. Same with Rose of Ultramarine. The granulation is so beautiful :) For my perfect palette I couldn't narrow it down this far, so I used a case with 60 spaces lol. I've recently discovered the pleasure of mixing Rose of Ultramarine with Serpentine Genuine, finding that I could make a whole painting with just those and be happy. I love the combo for both florals and even mixed together for making skin tones.
Thank you so much for this, very well taught! I've recently begun working with watercolor to quickly "sketch out) my ideas for glazing pottery. So in trying to understand nuances in watercolor, you have also helped me to understand a logical way to organize my over abundance of glazes! I can't wait to make my first favorite color palette .. both with watercolor AND on clay:D

I’m in shock. I new to watercolor and recently acquired some of the professional Winsor & Newton watercolor tubes- but I had NO idea you could just let them dry out like that in a palette. I watched another video where someone built there palette and I was so confused when she kept squeezing the colors in all the wells
Yes, part of the beauty of watercolor is that you can use it wet from the tube or rehydrated from the pallet. After playing with it you begin to understand when you want to use each. When I was a kid i thought i had to allow it to dry before using, now I often use straight from the tube for wet on wet washes or when i need a higher concentration of color and reconstituted for anything else

I love charts. I have made myself a colour chart reference book of every brand and colour I own. It's a work in progress as I still have a couple of Charts to finish. It's called my little book of happy. I'm planning a video about this book. 😀
Do you make them in one book or in loose papers then bind them together? I have watercolor pencils of different brands bought from open stock so they're incomplete. I'd like to complete the set and make color chart but not sure which way is better. Book or loose papers?
Interesting choices. I prefer the blue heavy palette. Especially since I like making seascapes.
No color charts. Not yet, anyway. Just getting into watercolors. Learning a lot. Torn between my love for oils and the fun of watercolors.

For a small amount of colors I like to make a full square because then I can see what different amounts of colors look like too. This helped a lot when I was starting out.

You always seem to make these videos right when I need them! I’m looking into making a custom palette for myself at some point in the near future!!! I already made myself a collage of pictures of the colors I’m looking at investing in and everything! 😂 (I’m saving for more Daniel Smith and M Graham tubes) I really like the colors you chose for this! And I agree, I always find earth tones the prettiest!

I learned with a limited pallet of about 10 colors for nature paintings and I am only just recently understanding why people would need so many colors. Love seeing your process and look forward to continuing to build my own skills and collection as i expand my subjects and style. Love that pallet and hopefully will get one soon

I find building the right palette for individual style preference to be so hard. Especially cause there are so many colours and options out there. Your palette looks amazing, love how you set up the mixing grid

I chose Daler and Rowney (DR) Quin Magenta, Daniel Smith (DS Quin Rose, DS Rhodonite Genuine, DS Pyrrol Scarlet, DS New Gamboge, Winsor and Newton (WN) Naples Yellow, DS Hansa Yello Light, WN Davy's Grey, DS Serpentine Genuine, Grumbacher (Gr) Davy's Grey, DS Jadite Genuine, DS Pthelo Blue, DR Coerulean Blue, DS Mayan Blue Genuine, DS French Ultra Marine Blue, Gr Payne's Grey, DS Hematite Genuine, WN Ultra Marine Violet, DS Amathest Genuine, DS Piemontite Genuine, WN Van Dyke Brown, DS Pearlescent Shimmer. I think I'm going to add a Hooker's Green and an Indian Red. I haven't ever had the patience to sit down and make a color chart, but I am going to try this weekend to make one like yours. i cannot live without a quinacridone rose/permanent rose in my palette! apart from the pinks, which are near and dear to me, i also use it for a wonderful variety of purples (which is why i also like having a good selection of blues). your palette made me interested in venturing into some more yellows i dont have, and buff titanium, because im seeing some mixes on your chart that could be skin tones and thats always a Struggle™ for me haha.
Wow! Can't wait to see what you're going to paint with those colours 😍 for me painting mixing charts is so relaxing and therapeutic that i tend to do the square version so that they can take longer to paint :3
Always need a granulating colour in my palette, usually potter's pink, cerulean blue, cobalt blue or cobalt teal, i need to have one of those at all times 😍😍 and py150, that yellow is a must xD

I really thought I had commented on this video months ago, but I guess not! I love the color choices for your palette, they're so soft and earthy :)
I also took Denise's class on Skillshare, and it was a wonderful resource. The color I I love most is Qor's Green Gold, as it's a wonderful mixing color, making vibrant but earthy oranges and greens. I prefer to do my mixing chart as a part of my swatch cards. In the project section of Denise's class, I posted pictures of my swatch cards for nearly all of my colors, so about 36 I think? They're 4x6 pieces of watercolor paper gridded out into rectangles. I take my main color, and do a large swatch at the bottom, and then I use the other spots to swatch mixtures of my main color with the other colors in my palette. I like to mix the swatches with more of the main color, so that I don't get duplicates on the various cards. I paint them wet in wet (so that I can look for any granulation), and then when they dry I add a glaze on half the square to get an idea of the color at it's most saturated. I used to make a big color chart like you did, only I made the full chart with different mixing ratios, but I find my small card method easier to use and store, though it does take more time.
Oh, I also wanted to mention that I recently got Transparent Red Oxide from Daniel Smith (I was spurred on by one of Oto's color showdown videos) and it makes an even darker black than my Burnt Sienna (Da Vinci) when mixed with Ultramarine Blue (also Da Vinci), with gorgeous granulation. You may want to check it out! It's a transparent version of PR101, and I replaced Burnt Sienna with it in my palette because the mixtures are so much richer. I'm adding the swatch card to my project now, so check it out if you're interested :)
I do the whole square, and do the darkest and lightest versions of each mix. Some kind of magenta is my favorite; I need something pink to make my favorite mixes.

Lovely palette! I have yet to find a colour that I rely on all the time but I also do not have a consistent style yet. I created a square colour chart that has 1:3 mixes on each side of the diagonal so one half has mor of the main colour and the other has more of the mixer. I mixed it up a few times though but it is still nice to look at.

I always find it fascinating to see what colours other people choose for their palette. I haven´t made a dream palette yet because I have such difficulties choosing limited number of colours, I8 wouldn´t cover all my favourites. I know you don´t NEED 7 blues og 6 greens in your palette but they are all so useful and beautiful :)
Its really lovely to see that your palette is quite a different mix of brands, although Daniel smith and Qor did have an extra lil punch with its colours! I'm now curious about the Qor brand as i already know of Daniel smiths quality! :) Also its so satisfying to see these colours come together, your chosen colours really do mix so well!
My favourite colour(s) would be Cad Yellow and Sap Green from Winsor and Newton. I am very new yo watercolours so I only have Winsor and Newton! You have really inspired me to do more watercolour pieces.
I only use 8 colours for my watercolours and my oil paints. I use Alizarin crimson,Cadmium primary Yellow,ultramarine blue,tittanium white,intense black,Silver,gold and Magenta. I love you,re watercolour pallet Arleebean 🫶🏾👍🏾👋🏾😁
DS Quinacridone Gold (old formula PO49) is definitely a staple. It mixes the most stunning greens and oranges! Glad I was able to get extra tubes, but my heart goes out to new painters that might not get to try it for themselves :(

I like to make round swatch cards i love to mix colours and i love layering water colours i only use 5 colours for all my paints. I use Alizarin crimson,Cadmium primary Yellow, ultramarine blue,tittanium white and mars black. My extra colours are Silver,Gold and magenta. I love magenta. Great cart chart Arleebean
Thanks for your work arleebean! You’re my kinda WC painter :) I also hate wasting paper/time/paint doubling up swatches, I even geeked out for a few hours developing a swatching method so that I could fit all my swatches into a flooscap notebook. I did it in Microsoft excel. I found that 12x12 and 18x18 swatches ended up too large for a notebook. I almost had to do math... it was hard 😂
This was amazing to watch and makes me want to dive in and starting purchasing wayercolors and take it back up. In highschool I decided it was my favorite painting medium. What you did proves one reason why. All you need is water? I always loved using a dryer brush to sap up wet areas or a really thick loaded brush with lots of pigment to darken areas. In school our teacher taught us how to mix each colr with white or black to make what he called tints and hues.
So currently I am in confusion as to what brand to buy first? I like strong pigmented color. If I knew what was the highest pigmented wayercolor I would go with that.
I would also lile to learn how to use some of the liquid additives to a watercolor art piece? That masking fluid has me uber curious?

I really love green, especially willow green, not many brands have a willow green, sometimes i make my own using other brands mixed together.

with my yellow colors, i use a tissue or paper towel to soak up the areas that get kinda muddy after each use. :)
I don't have a huge collection of watercolours yet but it very quickly expanding. I think i'd like to make a new pallet soon as i am now a bit more understanding of what i want out of my colour selection, but i hesitate because the one and only colour chat i made took me hours to finish. That was a full square with one half at mast strength and the other tinted out. If i do make a new colour chart, i think i'll try this half grid, because i really don't think i can sit there all day do a full one.

I do usually do the whole thing. Lol and Naples yellow.. mauve.. ultramarine blue.. Payne's gray.. cadmium red.. sal green.. those are my go to colors.
I always either need a Prussian Blue a palette or a Payne's Grey. Just something about those colours just make a palette just pop to me
