Complex melodies played instrumental on fiddle or hardanger fiddle are known as "slått". Rhythmic once are for dancing, some are for listening "lydarslått".
I love this instrument so much that I feature a Hardanger fiddle in one of my novels. The character is a traveling tent musician who kept a diary in the late 1800s to early 1900s. (Wish I could have found a great HF photo to use for the cover!)
Amazing! Are there any tunebooks available for hardingfele tunes? I suspect my google searches are not yielding results because they're not in English :)
solidesynnja thanks a ton! Also since you are more knowledgeable in this, any books in English that describe the rhythm patterns, ornaments and all in Norwegian Traditional music?
Well ... Here's the nerd's edition: www.hf.uio.no/imv/english/research/projects/fiddlevolumes/thehardi/ :) Depends on what level you're seeking knowledge. There are several articles published as book summaries. But to my knowledge, no english books dedicated to the subject(s).
Here is a guide to common tunings: 3 doubleyou hfaa.org/Home/articles-on-the-hardanger-fiddle/a-guide-to-tunings-on-the-hardingfele The five drone strings run through the center of the bridge and under the fretboard to the tuning head of the instrument, giving it that unique hardanger sound. You still play just the four usual strings.
does the lines on the neck help with getting the right notes or are they just decorative? i've been playing guitar, i'm really not that talented, i wouldn't start a fretless instrument i think.... requires some naturally good musical ear just to play a scale..
It's a skill like any other my friend. Put some faith in yourself. You can do it. A few months of finger tapes and you'll be surprised how much your brain has memorized where your fingers go.
very majestic , what an amazing sound and a lovely melody
I don't think I could have sat still & watched. Vive la Springar. Gotta dance! Wonderful. Thank you.

"Dei beste damene" (best lady fiddlers) - no doubt
They're not frets - just decorative. So, there's no shortcut learning how to play this instrument - it's all about practice.

How is this fiddle tuned? Is it much different to play this fiddle than a 4-stringed violin?
Någon som vet om hennes fela är trollstämd eller normalstämd?

Sounds Middle Eastern.
Hmm, perhaps, music and other art travels around the world, but this definitely Norwegian
