Great advise. I like to use the 4 mm for lining as most of my clients have tough skin. ( I am in Costa Rica with lots of suntanned skin) unless they are tourist from other countries who have soft skin. Glad you said many times about being careful not chewing up the skin and about it healing.

Great video! I use a 4mm stroke for lining and whip shading American Traditional tattoos!
As always another great video. Missed you when you were at the MK Tattoo Convention. I've been using the Dragonhawk Extreme X2 recently over my older Stealth 1 (Prefer Armature over Direct). With the adjuster dial you can change the stroke and hit of the needle. It's a decent machine that gives good smooth lines, shading and packing.
I use 4.2 stroke for lines, packing ando shading, but i use a click grip to set the deepnes. :)

Nice vídeo man! Just want to say that rpm and the motor matters too. Theres a lot of machines with 3.5mm that are more Powerfull than some 4.0mm machines. And there are some machines with 3.5 that run like a 2.5/2.8 machines. All things matter. 🙏🏻

I use the axys valhalla pen.. you can change the strokes in like 2 seconds with a twist of the machine... It's amazing I love this machine so much and it gave me the chance to learn quickly witch stroke I like the most for each technique I use !!!

Hey bro you need to check out the Axys Valhalla one machine it has adjustable strokes on the fly it features 5 different strokes ! Pretty nice built machine super smooth and the grips are twice as affordable as most machines of its style love your videos tho keep it up bro !

Your videos are very clear concise info m8.. guys who are new in the game can learn much from you and save em selves learning by error.
Although I did half an apprenticeship, which taught me enough, the studio.. as many do, were using me much more than teaching me, I got wise to it (beware guys.. make sure they're not just gonna use u).. we fell out, quite dramatically on the shop floor 😂😂.. however, I learned the business backwards.. hygiene/avoiding contamination etc, preparing stencils, bookings/deposits & consultations etc etc.. plus I realised quite quickly that bar one artist in the shop, they were all dreadful, and without sounding big headed, I kinda new that once I learned to tattoo, I'd be better than them. So.. if you have artistic/creative ability and drive and dedication.. you will succeed.. clients will come, if the works good, more will come.
Regarding stroke/ throw/give.. learning g with s coil helped alot.. thectransition to direct drive Rotaries wasnt an issue.. infact, I love em from the get go.. no more hand cramps/hands feeling like they'd been plugged into the mains after.. I still love Coils, but my hands dont 😬..
I find a 4.2 stroke on the Edge X is great, i really do t find it much more dramatic than the 3.7 cam if I'm honest.. bit more punchy but I've never chewed anyone up with it.
The Xion is MUCH better (black n grey, and especially portrait) with the 3.7 stroke cam.. the 3.2 is just to soft.. a 4hr tattoo would become a 5+ hour tattoo on the 3 2. The 3.7 is smooth and def makes a difference with this machine. Not the machine in general though for those who wanna all round work super quick.. but if your about quality super smooth shading.. the xion is great once you find your sweet spot. The give thingy ain't really necessary.. I bought into all that jazz for a while. But it's a minor shift, almost dampened the hit a lil in my opinion.. you hand can do the give for you.. learn this, pay attention, dont go to heavy to fast.. and you'll be fine..
The Cheyenne sol nova Unlimited... absolutely great for ease and an all rounder.. however.. I do still prefer the Xion for super smooth shading.. seems to layer it up a lil better.. but the work I've done over last few months with the sol unlimited has healed absolutely amazingly..
over time.. you find your own way.. I've owned cheap coils.. well made coils.. magnetic system machines.. Direct drives, and various pen machines, with various strokes and give systems.. they all produce good tattoos..
Put the hours in.. gain the experience.. dont expect not to make some mistakes, you will and in that you learn. PUT THE HOURS IN. DEDICATE YOURSELF!!
You can learn loads from guys like Oliver.. not many artists are willing to share in depth knowledge n tricks they picked up along the road..
Note.. if your creative, but not an artist.. stick to bold traditional or geometric, dot work, etc.. please dont say yes to doing a portrait.. that is a skill you just cant buy.. that, is a god given talent.. and even that takes time to understand when working with grey wash ink that heals 30% lighter than in the application.. so, all you pen n paper portrait artists.. dont think you can just slip straight into this.. if you have the talent, you def WILL be able to do portrait tattoos..once you've learned the ropes.. drawing on paper is completely different to skin.

Man bro your comment helped me very much! I needed that comment right now and was very important to me. Asked all over with no answer! Smh. …. Pertaining to the Xion machine, with the 3.2 and 3.7 stroke. And the give setting that you can adjust. I’m also new to tattooing, been constantly and consistently non stop practicing for about a year. 5 months on fake skin and for the last 6 months started off of myself doing up my legs and thighs. Then onto some people these last 4 months. I’m told I’m pretty damn good and people don’t believe I was self taught from watching people like Oliver. But I put in so much time and effort on myself and trial and error. Lucky not too much error lol. But I just recently purchased a new machine lil upgrade for me, and it’s just like the Xion. It’s a Bronc V7. I’ve heard allot about it and how similar it is to the Xion. Yes even tho it’s Chinese made, but it’s what I could afford and many artist told me it’s just as good as Xion. Just wondering your opinion and wanted to ask about the machine. Does the give actually work? Is the 3.7 cam so different from a 3.7? My previous machine was 3.5 Mummy. (No give/different cam option)
Can I still achieve light shading for black and grey with 3.7 cam in. Cause I can’t pull good lines with the 3.2 😖
What’s the proper voltage for this machine? Says don’t put past 7.5 volts. How many clicks does your machine have on the give setting? Mine has 16, is this normal? Does it even notice much of a difference from hard to soft?? Is this machine good for black and grey realism and reliable machine? Thanks man ahead
i use the new cheyenne thunder direct drive 4mm stroke the serie before sol terra
i love to use this one for black and grey and liner's and she works nice for color packing to
but i prefer to use inkjecta flite nano for coloring back with 3.25 mm stroke
i feel comfortable with inkjecta in my teqnique of color packing on blending and layering colors how i want

I use a mast flip pen. And when I first got it I was told to use my long stroke for shading a short for lineing.. after seeing this I'm gunna chang it up

I recently got the Spectra Xion and am excited to experiment with the longer stroke cam
I recent bought the Bishop Wand Packer with a longer stroke of 4.2 very nice machine but keep volts down as it does irritate the skin quickly

To shade with a 4 mm tattoo machine i drop voltage down to 4.5 v to 5.5 v it works smooth.

ı use fk direct 2, halo and xion , fk direct 2 is tattooed best line 2.8 and xions stroke for shading 3.5 for me.

Thank you! I found this really helpful. Im a PMU Artist and my current go to is the Bishop Fantom and Critical Atom.... The Fantom suggests working about I think its 8V to 11V, but this is a bit harsh for PMU... I. E lipsx brows and eyeliner... A few peers are loving the Bishop Packer which is a longer stroke... But they seem to love it on Lips on a Lower V... Any thoughts as I'd have thought this could be a bit heavy with the stroke? Thanks!
Yo I’m a big fan of your work and I been following you since the first couple of videos here on TH-cam.. I currently have the bishop wand Shader and I have trouble doing one solid line passes and packing in solid black I’ve been doing lettering & B&G work would the bishop Packer do the trick?
lots of people use 4mm for everything does great shading too 3.5mm is not good for line work its for shading and color only with 4mm u just need to move hands faster to shade with and use bugpins so dont cause dramma to skin as much

Hi Oliver, I'm a great fan of your videos. I've learned a lot from you. I recently purchased my first profesional tattoo machine, the Axys Valhalla. It's an Incredible machine and I like how its easy to switch the stroke from 2.5, 2.9, 3.4, 3.8, and 4.2 mm. It'd be awesome if you could try this machine and make a video about your opinion.
Do you still use the Valhalla? Would you recommend it? I’m having nothing but problems with mine.
cool cool ! i’m using direct 2 as it is my fav machine cus it is closer to a coils. anyway the cam i’m using is with 2.8mm and i do sometimes color packing with it... it works for me, which probably is not the most right thing but as i said it is fine for me!

Hi. I have been using cheyenne pen with 3.5 for soft shading . Its just great machine for realistic work. Now i switch to sol nova its also 3.5 but i find a big difference. Everything just go so smooth heal perfect very easy to use machine. I also do a lot of linework and im using the thunder 4.0mm . Nice balance and power. I could never do line with the pen that have the quality of the thunder. Nice video keep going ✌️
Different motor in sol nova. Stronger.but itc softer on the skin.these german guys are genius

Hey there. Well, I started like most artists to Line with a Coil Machine. I was using a Power Liner and 9rl Needles for my first few tattoos. Since the average smallest Needlegrouping for this kind of machine was stated as 9rl you can imagine how easy it was to get those bold and crisp Lines into the skin. After switching to a Rotary Pen (Spektra Xion GG) it was like starting over completely. Even lining with a 5 rl wasn't as easy as the 9rl with the Coil machine. But it's all a matter of getting used to it. Now I'm using the 3.2mm stroke to shade and line. Or if I'm having bigger Linework to do, I'm switching to a 3,7mm stroke just to get a better Punch and it doesn't need as much pressure to get the ink in. Having 2 different machines helps, since changing the stroke everytime you switch from lining to shading and back is way to much effort and you can't keep things sterile. I hate to adjust anything during the tattoo, that's why I switched to a rotary pen. 😅

Started with a Javelin X, only now understanding hit, it's no wonder it does such great lines and piss poor shading (mind my lack of skill, haha). I'm running all Turbo carts right now as I got a great deal on them, but they're close to expiry so time for a change as I can't find them at my local shop anymore. That said, after watching your 7 consistency tips, I learned, they make fantastic mag, but crap liners, haha, so thanks for that little gem. Right now Radiant ink Turbo black, Kokkai Sumi greys and Dynamic white. I've just purchased a new CNC machine, but am looking at one that has an adjustable hit that, while substantially more, might be the difference between owning one machine and more than three... I'm going to test the CNC tonight and see, 4mm stroke on the JX down to 3.5 on the new CNC but a significantly larger motor up from 4.5w JX to 10w CNC. Fingers crossed.

Thanks ( loved the one on dissecting artists ) I have a proton equalizer which is great for shading but for lines not so great - thinkning might be stroke ( my mate has a cheap italian rotary which does lines much better ) but the equaliser and that machine have the same stroke 3.5 .... does the proton have more " give " ? im all confused. And for #8 3rl linework which is better long or short stoke ?

I haven’t even tattooed yet. I am still waiting for my needle so I can start practicing. The rotary machine I purchased has a stroke of 3.5 (cnc q2) but I am just contemplating the theoretical aspects of how the machine works while I wait. This brings me to my question about the relationship between floating the tube, needle depth, and stroke. If you are constantly trying to keep the needle at 2mm in the skin and you want the needle to go back in the tube between cycles to refill ink, will a stroke of 5mm fully retract back between cycles and will a shorter stroke of 2.5 mm go deep enough to reach the dermis? I guess I am still confused about how this actually plays out.

I've always used a 3.5 stroke for everything. I've been curious about the 3.7, 3.8 and 4.0 strokes, but after feeling the difference on my skin after being tattooed with a 4.2, I do not want my clients to endure more pain than they need. So 3.7 will probably be the furthest I'll ever go.

Funny thing is I've switched to 5.0 some months ago and neither me on myself nor my customers noticed more pain. Actually bright colours and white bleed less sonic am wondering what I am doing differently.
Cheyenne Sol Nova unlimited 5.0 is what I am using, 90% of the time in steady mode.

Soft and hard It’s about the give.
The stroke it’s different tho.
You can have 4.0 with softer hit ( give ) or 4.0 no give ( hard hit )
But there’s no such a thing as softer or hard stroke mate

I was under the impression that “throw” was how far you let your needle hang out of the machine, or needle depth to be more specific
i dont know if you already know, but i heard you mention about the coil, now speaking of the coil.
since you said about rotary, the longer the stroke the harder it hits, the better for lining and the shorter the stroke the softer it hits, the better shading and packing.
why tho the coil machine works in oposite, like, if its long stroke its good for packing and shading, and the shorter stroke it is good for shading, they said, is it correct or what?
