After playing Obra Dinn, Golden Idol, Her Story, this video + the steam reviews naturally got me playing Outer Wilds. The bar was set high from the previous games. But what can I say. Outer Wilds has suceeded expectations even.
The Painscreek Killings is by far the best mystery game I’ve ever played. It just drops you in a town no hints the world. It truly is YOU solving the mystery.
I watched gab smolders playthrough so many times! It's why I'm on this video looking for more. The twist at the end as far as gamelan through me off. 😂
Outer Wilds is just a special experience. The way the scientific principles at play in the story and the nature of the puzzles mutually reinforce each other, plus the overall execution, just amazing. I'll never forget playing it and the feeling of getting to a new area. Excellent video!
A mystery game I'd recommend is one that has nothing to do with murder, it's Chants of the Sennar where you learn about different civilizations living on one single tower though no word spoken by any character nor written on paper or sign is in any language we are familiar with but made up languages that you have to decipher as you explore more about each civilization.
something i think is great about Her Story’s initial question is that it’s not ‘who killed simon?’ it’s ’did she kill simon?’ and i think immediately pushing focus on to one suspect and learning so much about her life and what led up to the murder is what makes it work so well
cane here after finishing my first detective game: obra dinn. so gutted there's only one considered better by a fantastic authority. great video thanks
I was not prepared for how in depth this was going to be. Incredible start when I absolutely loved Paradise Killer and it doesn't get talked about nearly enough. And then Tangle Tower was already on my wishlist and happens to be on sale!
This video is so well made, I keep coming back to admire the research and presentation of the games. It honestly made me want to play all these games. Please continue making such videos! I note you haven’t posted in a long time, looking forward to your next vid whenever that is!
A mention I'd like to make is Heaven's Vault, another game by Inkle. You're an archaeologist in a unique fantasy world of islands floating through a nebula you navigate by sailing its streams. You seek to find a lost colleague while learning about the ancient history of the world around you, spanning thousands of years. It's a point-and-click game at heart but the fascinating aspect is that you have most of the answers in front of you, but you need to translate them from the long-forgotten ancient language. You slowly piece it together through context and inference, learning the words and grammar. There are some choices you can make in the game that will change how your story turns out, some things may or may not be possible depending on what you do. You can also play a new game plus mode when you beat it, which is still the same except the language decyphering has a lot more to it.
very nice video! Some of these are among my absolute favorites games too: painscreek killings, unheard, her story (and telling lies) and obra dinn, I loved them. I'm surprised you did not mention any of the Sherlock Holmes games, some of them are pretty cool, and the deduction mechanics are unique
I'm so excited when I see Unheard on your list! It's one of my favorite mystery games and I feel like it doesn't receive the amount of attention it deserved.
This video deserves more appreciation! I stumbled upon it while trying to look for more recommendations and was pulled into your narration and explanation. I didn't even notice the video was an hour long until I saw a comment talking about it. Looking forward to more great content! Thanks for the hard work!
I just had the exact same experience lol I came for some quick recommendations got engrossed in the video and then read your comment after finishing and was completely shocked that it was an hour long.
The only downside of mystery games is you're not gonna play it again...but it's my favourite genre. The amount of rage I had trying to identify the final missing people in Obra Dinn made me go insane 😂
Shadows of Doubt was released earlier this year. You play a detective in a procedurally generated city block where every building and apartment is explorable and every citizen is "real". Murders are solved purely from deductive reasoning. Conversations with citizens only provide leads (i.e. they won't react to the crime (even if they are related to the victim) or provide distractors (e.g. they won't allow you to enter their home, or give up their name.) All clues (photos, notes, trash, fingerprints, etc.) you collect can be pinned on a dashboard (your memory). And they are automatically linked to each other (if your discovery of them are linked). Or you can link them up yourself manually. EDIT: You have to commit crime to solve crimes. E.g. break and enter to gather evidence. END EDIT.
I actually was looking for a game I forgot the name of, and I though I saw it on your intro. I played Tangle Tower way back when it first came out. Thanks for helping me find it again. 😄
I have a recommendation: The Case of the Golden Idol is an amazing mystery game! Unfortunately I never finished Outer Wilds cuz for some reason I feel a LOT of anxiety around space and the deep sea. Exploring in that game, for me, is torture :(
This is a really well-thought-out video. I never really gave it much thought, the differences between mystery games. But now is I'm getting interested in them, you put words to thoughts I couldn't explain.
Amazing video, thanks a lot for the content! You have lots of good insight into game design and you got very good points regarding what makes these games great. A pleasure to watch.
Great video! Her story is really cool. I haven't played any other game from the list but I've added a few on my Steam wishlist. I have to try Night in the woods, because everyone keeps mentioning it. Obra Dinn looks very interesting, I don't like the visuals much, but the concept sounds great.
This was a great video. It's difficult for me to keep my attention on a singular thing for longer than a minute, but I watched the entire thing and found some great new games to add to my wishlist. I subscribed.
Wow this video is amazing. I like to listen to your voice and you deliver a lot of information in an on point and yet exciting way, and you make me want to play all these games with the enthusiasm you talk about them. I am looking forward to more videos of yours and youve got yourself an subscriber and fan! I wish you all the best!
This is the best video I’ve seen in a loooong time both as a viewer and a creator. As a viewer I’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on buying some of these and your reviews are great at painting out how the game feels. as a creator the amount of detail you give and love you share with each individual entry while not giving full spoilers inspires me a lot. Also like the in depth exposition you gave before you started the top 10. Fantastic video
Great video! Her Story and Obra Dinn are the only 2 I've played, but I loved them. Telling Lies felt like a big letdown after Her Story though. There was just no central mystery to grip you.
I have played Obra Dinn, Unheard and Painscreek Killings on my Discord server with my friends and the experience for all three games was perfection. Everyone who joined to watch the stream participated in solving the mystery, and that group effort was very enjoyable. Especially in Obra Dinn. Scene Investigator sadly did not live up to the hype for me (from the devs of Painscreek Killings). I actually never finished it cause I was very bored. But it appears that they are cooking some kind of a DLC for Painscreek Killings based on SteamDB updates.
Thank you for putting this together and all your thoughts; I thought I would end up skipping straight to the list but ended up watching the whole way through because I liked hearing your thought process. Some of the games you showed clips of but didn’t name I wish I had the names for because they looked interesting! I was surprised to see Night in the Woods on here, since that game (as much as I love it) doesn’t really have what you were talking about in the first part of the video, which is actual deductive reasoning. Same with Disco, which is a hard thing for me to say because that game might be my favorite indie of all time; it’s certainly one of if not the best RPG I’ve played, but I’m not sure if it asks the player to solve questions, more just talking to the right people and interact with the right things. Obra Dinn and Paradise Killer I agree are excellent, even if Obra frustrated me at times, and I hope to play Outer Wilds soon after everything I’ve heard about it.
Great video! I spent many happy hours trying to puzzle out the murders in the first two Danganronpa games (while collecting the clues, instead of during the class trial). Yes, I know you can just go straight to the class trial, but I seriously enjoyed trying to figure out what happened without the game guiding me towards the answer.
You did a great job breaking down the genre. It's my favorite. Thank you for steering back towards the sexy brutale and unheard: voices of crime. I'll be checking them out soon. I like unique genres. If you haven't tried them yet, I strongly urge you to try Norco, The Fall part 1, and Stasis: Bone Totem.
I want to add one: A hand with many fingers. It is a very very strong open-ended mystery game with some seriously creepy parts and it truly made me experience the fear of knowledge!! Also a true story, so that’s real neat!
Great video and discussion! If you're looking for something different and creepy, with a realistic twist where you investigate a serial killer, there's an old game called "Missing Since January" (or In Memoriam in some countries). I don't know if it still runs on modern OS, but I think you might find it interesting.
Thanks, i just started playing PC games (had 1 a few years and mostly ignored it or played some GTA) was gonna get steam deck (waiting for the 2nd) but it got me into the pc again and was wondering about games to get. I watched your top 50 indie games and this and honestly gonna try most of them, so glad too as was needing a few prompts on where to go and think the mystery ones look really good, never played 1 (like i played resident evil typse things plus adore zelda puzzle type games). Just wanna say thanks for making this video man, much appreciated
Great video, unfortunately I played most of the games already, but I would like if you eventually make a follow up vídeo about mystery games and more videos about indie games in general
Well! What a good top ten list; such a delight to stumble on it by chance! Of mystery games I've also played- well, did you ever play the Kona games? They can turn into collectathons a little to easily for my liking, particularly the second, but they too are open ended mystery games involving notes being taken in an ingame notebook which allow the player to pursue the mystery in the manner they want. It seems to be something in the vein of these other games, but for all I know, you've gotten to them yourself now...
Really enjoyed your analysis, and I have a new list of 'want to try' games by going through the comments. I'd like to add 'Tacoma' as a space mystery recommendation. Very linear but I thought the way the game is designed was pretty special.
I can't help but notice that the Win95 classic Where in the World is Carmen San Diego is missing from this list 🤔 jk loved this list! You're a fantastic video essayist
Please make a follow-up to this with your honorable mentions or 11-20 or whatever! Probably too big an ask since this one took a lot out of you so thank you for curating this list!
That moment when you’ve played all the best indie mystery games ;-; I just wish there were 100s of games with the same design as outer wilds or obra din just set in different universes.
I think that you should absolutely give Danganronpa a shot, it's a really great game and it does give you some really good character depth, it also "guides" your investigation, but not in an obnoxious way, you only uncover the truth during the trial. It's about solving a series of murders that ultimately lead you to the understanding of the mystery behind the whole game. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but based on what I saw you talking about, i think you could really enjoy it!!
Decided to play all of these games and update my thoughts on them as I go through, so to start off I just beat Paradise Killer. I think it was a fun game! You can tell it was carefully crafted by the team and they tried to make an immersive world with its own unique characters. It was fun but very limited. It makes me wonder what type of game the devs could make with more resources. Gameplay was fun enough, and the story was alright, overall solid game.
if you haven’t played Immortality yet I highly highly recommend it. It is sam barlow’s latest game and it’s by far my favourite - perhaps doesn’t have as tight of a mystery as her story but it explores very interesting themes and ideas and develops its gameplay more to become something truly unsettling at times. absolute masterpiece and went under the radar a bit.
Just finished and platinumed paradise killer and the music, the case and the details all came full circle in a great way. No spoilers but i can recommend it to everyone who hasnt played it
Amazing video, I'll definitely be checking out some of these thanks to you! Outer Wilds is already my favorite game of all time, though, so no need to convince me of that haha. Seriously, if someone is reading this that hasn't played Outer Wilds, go do it! And the DLC!
I stopped as soon as you said "Outer Wilds," but I stopped with a smile. I have it and am planning to play it. I want to go in blind. I hope that doesn't mess with your CTR. I'll fastforward to the end without listening just to be safe. And thank you. I'm really looking forward to it. There are so many games I wish I could erase from my mind so I could experience them anew for the first time, and I've heard people say that about Outer Wilds. Those games don't come around often (Nier: Automata comes to mind...if you play all the way to ending E, as you should). It's even rarer to know you have one before its all over. Thank you for the extra warning about going in blind. I will. And I'll love it. :)
Great list i have to say A few other mentions these are old but they paved the way Murder on the Zinderneuf, Dick Tracy crime solving adventure, and US Gold Murder..... I'd be surprised though if like me Shadows of Doubt hasn't taken over the number 1 spot, and set a new standard in how a detective game should be ...cheers
I remember playing Outer wilds on play pass, cause i thought the rocketship looked cool in the photo of the game - i thought, oh! "A fun game about space" - Of you haven't played it, go experience the best game ever made. ❤ Thank you for a video with several titles i haven't played!
13:10 Paradise killer

After playing Obra Dinn, Golden Idol, Her Story, this video + the steam reviews naturally got me playing Outer Wilds.
The bar was set high from the previous games. But what can I say.

a game so good, it makes amnesia sound pretty great!
The Painscreek Killings is by far the best mystery game I’ve ever played. It just drops you in a town no hints the world. It truly is YOU solving the mystery.

Chants of Sennar is one of the greatest games I have ever played
This is a gold mine! Thanks a lot for sharing all of your insights. Love the way you abstract, order and communicate all of your game analysis.
I hope you continue with videos like these... been looking for more thoughtful discussions on video games, and this really hits the mark.

I saw hypnospace outlaw on your intro in the first 20 seconds and I got excited. This is how you know this man's not lying.
I was not prepared for how in depth this was going to be. Incredible start when I absolutely loved Paradise Killer and it doesn't get talked about nearly enough. And then Tangle Tower was already on my wishlist and happens to be on sale!

Hearing the first seconds of "Echoes of the Eye" again hit me like a freight train. Outer Wilds is a treasure.
I hadnt installed the expansion pack for the longest time , waitin for when i need it. Girlfriend of 2 years cheated on me, here i come

How can this video not have more views?! It is an amazing in-depth review and recommendations video
I loved Jenny LeClue Detectivu but I do not know if it is a game for you! But I think it was awesome
I'm so excited when I see Unheard on your list! It's one of my favorite mystery games and I feel like it doesn't receive the amount of attention it deserved.

Obra dinn is a masterpiece

This is a really well-thought-out video. I never really gave it much thought, the differences between mystery games. But now is I'm getting interested in them, you put words to thoughts I couldn't explain.
Finally someone talks about Her story! It's one of my favourite games ever, it deserves so much more!
i rarely watch videos that are longer than 20 minutes, let alone an hour... great work
All we need is some timestamps for the top 10 list and this is a perfect video
Amazing video, thanks a lot for the content! You have lots of good insight into game design and you got very good points regarding what makes these games great. A pleasure to watch.

Holy fuck, 1 hour of effort for 100 views? you deserve more man
The Case of The Golden Idol, is THE BEST mystery, investigation games
This is a fantastically done video! Deserves way more views!
These games sound fascinating! I’d definitely like to give some of these a try. Especially the last two.
If this video had a remake, Pentiment e The Case of the Golden Idol would definetly be on it, masterpieces!
This is an amazing video. Can't believe this does not have more views.
You deserve way more views man great video
Great video and discussion! If you're looking for something different and creepy, with a realistic twist where you investigate a serial killer, there's an old game called "Missing Since January" (or In Memoriam in some countries). I don't know if it still runs on modern OS, but I think you might find it interesting.

This video is insanely well done. You won over a sub.

Great video, you've earned a sub.
Would love another video on detective and mystery games!
I can't help but notice that the Win95 classic Where in the World is Carmen San Diego is missing from this list 🤔 jk loved this list! You're a fantastic video essayist
I loved the Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo game, a pretty good mystery thriller game.
Earned a subscriber… this was so informative thank you I was looking for some good games to make me think
Me and my friends are currently developing a detective game, I hope we will make it into a list like this at some point.
Excellent list, I found few games for myself on it.
I would love a video on the best sherlock holmes games
Please make a follow-up to this with your honorable mentions or 11-20 or whatever! Probably too big an ask since this one took a lot out of you so thank you for curating this list!

Yes!!! Unheard is a great game and I'm glad it's on your list! No one ever talks about it!
Tunic has some very cool puzzles and mysteries but i wouldn't say it's the main focus.
You have to check out The Case of the Golden Idol, I'm sure it would make your list

Great video. Please do a part 2
Keep it up! Really deep analysis on this underrated genre
This content is amazing. Keep up the good work.
Brilliant video!
Please play Forgotten City! I don't think it will top Outer Wilds for you, but it should scratch a similar itch gameplay wise.
The forgotten city is such a hidden gem, I can't recommend it enough to those who like this kind of gameplay.
What’s the game at the start with the fbi thing
This is such a good top ten list.
What music was playing during your outro? It sounded so familiar to me but I can’t place it.
This video is incredibly underrated.
Painscreek Killings is the only one in your list that I like lol, but cudos because it's amazing and makes up for the whole list.
If you want games with a little more thinking:
Mainlining
Cyber Manuhunt
Orwell
Tech Support Error Unknown
Extortion
MU Complex
Hacknet
Uplink
great list and great content. thanks. just one honourable mention I want to add.. Nancy Drew games (except the last one) are great. :)
This is the best top 10 I've ever seen
Great list i have to say A few other mentions these are old but they paved the way Murder on the Zinderneuf, Dick Tracy crime solving adventure, and US Gold Murder..... I'd be surprised though if like me Shadows of Doubt hasn't taken over the number 1 spot, and set a new standard in how a detective game should be ...cheers
so many cool suggestions!
I loved disco Elysium and Her story. I will have to check out the rest of these.
hi , what is the name of background music for The painscreek killings ?
I remember playing Outer wilds on play pass, cause i thought the rocketship looked cool in the photo of the game - i thought, oh! "A fun game about space" - Of you haven't played it, go experience the best game ever made. ❤ Thank you for a video with several titles i haven't played!
Recommendation for mystery games like Famicom Detective Club, Raging Loop, World End Syndrome?
Obra Dinn is one of my favorite games of all time, maybe I should play Outer Wilds as well!
You are amazing. Tou deserve way more views and subs.
