  • This musical performance is inspired by, and in loving memory of Bill Wong.
Bill studied music in Canada, and although his studies were mostly focused on western classical, he had a deep admiration for Chinese folk songs. He loved the art of dancing and how it expressed the music in a whole other way. Bill went on to teach and spread his love for music with those around him, always showing kindness and open generosity.
The first song played is a traditional Chinese folk song: Yao Dance
The second song is an combination of traditional Chinese and Korean folk songs, uniquely adapted by Bill into an original arrangement he titled, Picking Apples.
The third song played is a Chinese folk song called “Longing” that is traditionally played in memory of someone (who is dearly missed). The three people performing this song had a special bond with Bill; his closest friend Harkin, his long-time friend Wayne, who is also the father of the cellist, Andy; Bill’s student.
The final song played is a solo performed by Bill himself. Bill believed deeply in his students and wanted them to excel, and always would place them in the solo parts in full trust, rarely performing them himself. This is the only known recorded solo he has ever done. The photos accompanying this special recording are of Bill and the people he taught and inspired through his love for music in his partial founding of the SCBC (Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church) Orchestra, and his founding and leading of the CME (Chinese Music Ensemble).
