    Thank You Very Much!
    I learned a valuable lesson from you when you said to back up the screw a little before screwing it in, to avoid damaging the whole by cross-threading the plastic. I used to have a problem putting the cap on the water bottle, It used to always cross thread. but now I just back it up till I hear/feel the click, then it screws in nicely. Thank again!

    Remember these digital motors have software and circuitry which compliments the battery. Also the battery light system also shoots codes for issues with the vacuum. More than just washing the filters is needed. Have you taken the cyclone canister apart ever? Remember these are not completely microscopic dust elimination proof. Static clings a lot of dust outside of the cyclone separators causing build up which in turn causes resistance. The screen becomes clogged as well. Tools needed are simple. T8 torx screwdriver. Soft plastic guitar pics as to not break the screen housing to remove the screen. Light compressed air to access the screw heads if they are caked in dust. Gentle removal of the chambers. Plastic tweezers or a cyclone canister release tool to remove the canister from the motor body on the v6. Hand wash all the parts except the gaskets with dish detergent and water. Let dry overnight and re- assemble. Makes a heck of a difference. 9 months after heavy use do this. You'll see the difference in performance. Remember loss of suction does occur in the caring of these cyclones, creating strain on the motor. Overheating the battery as well. Issues with the powerbrush motor and resistance adds to the load demands of the battery. Just replacing the battery with extra longevity can also throw led codes and intermittent surging. Also the digital motor circuitry had surge protection. The circuitry on the digital motor and brush bar compliment each other. This vacuum also has auto adjust features as well from carpet to hardwood floor, maybe not like the detect. Slight resistance acts as a sensor for the electronics to adjust, however if there are obstructions the vacuum goes into limp mode or even shuts off after 20 seconds if faults are detected not just in the airstream , but also the wiring and running temperatures, resulting in reduced performance.

      Thanks for the tip. I clean the cyclones on all Dyson's I have, but I don't bother taking them apart. I soak the whole canister in soapy water bucket and rinse and shake and spray until all that stuff is cleaned out. I know how people don't maintain them. I find Dyson's put out to the trash on the side of the road all the time because silly people think they don't suck anymore. It's always a simple clogged hose, filter or canister. Very easy to fix and get back like new.

    All 18650 batterie’s are graded from D to A+ from the manufacturer’s. When batches are made some cells come out better than other’s… hence the grade. Companies’s like Dyson pay top dollar for those A+ cells. If you understand 18650 batteries you can build your own. From vaping mechanical mod’s starting in 2012 I learned a lot about 18650 lithium batteries, because you had to build your own vape from the ground up, wrapping kanthal and using a 18650 surrounded by a metal tube with a mechanical switch on the bottom to complete the circuit. You learned ohm’s law to build safely and understood there was *only a few different 18650 manufacturer’s… LG, Samsung and Sony!* Most of these other batteries were re-wrapped Sony, Samsung or LG of lower grade… say B+ and down in quality. If you were looking for longevity and didn’t have a super low resistance build the Samsung and LG’s with higher 2500-3000mah… were perfect at lower loads with 15-20amps. But if you were pushing a really low resistance build (more vaper) at say 0.15 to 0.29 only one cell could push those amps safely, being the Sony VTC 5 at 30amp but only 1500-2000mah. I didn’t vape that low usually. But, understand this was a brand new cell at that time which was cutting edge technology for high drain needs in an 18650 battery. If you understand the Dyson motor and what it’s pulling, at normal and peak, then you can split the amp load between the batteries running them in *parallel* with a high drain cells… say like Sony VTC5. They have better now but I haven’t kept up on the latest cells but usually Sony made the best high drain 18650 batteries. Less mah at 2000-2500mah per battery, but it could sustain 35amps per cell. The more individual 18650 cells it can utilize the less strain on each battery keeping temperature’s lower and efficiency better.

      Thanks! I need to dig up the brand/model of this flooring, but I can't recommend it. It looks nice and the surface is very durable and scratch resistant. It is a premium vinyl floating plank, and the top clear layer is extra thick to increase wear and scratch resistance. However, the overall plank it is not very thick, which means the click joints are not thick, and therefore will break easily in some situations. So far, everything going over the plywood subfloor has been ok, but some that was installed on a concrete floor has had curling issues where there is an office chair rolling over it. The edges curl up, and the click connection breaks. I've noticed that the planks curl slightly in general (long edges rise higher than center). I was dubious about the thin click connection when being it was being installed, and rightly so.

    It would be good to see a tear down of the pack to see the spec of cell, and capacity testing for actuality. There is a 3D adapter on thingverse to allow using a Dewalt battery, and another for doubling the cell count on an OEM pack - utilising the original circuitry!

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I now have a battery capacity tester, so I do plan to do that. In my experience so far, most 3rd party Chinese power tool packs that publish a believable Ah rating, still falsely advertise the capacity by 1Ah too much. Regardless, this double pack still lasts way longer than the original pack. It does have some issues where sometimes it needs to be disconnected from the vacuum and reconnected before it will start working.

      @@engineerable In y experience, with calibrated loads and testing, the Chinese "ABC" fly by night companies that are on amazon, selling dyson batteries, dewalt, makita, Milwaukee, and power banks are not exaggerating by 1amp but by more like 2amps on supposed five amp batts. Absurd claims on lumens on flashlights or temperature ratings on the chinese sleeping bags are even worse. They just make up a number. Worse yet, the number of cycles you get is 1/5 to 1/10 those you get from OEM companies that insist on quality control from suppliers. When people calculate the price based "value" of the knockoffs they assume the the capacity numbers are real and that they will get typical cycles of OEM batts that would normally last 500 to 700 cycles. In fact when you put in real capacity, and more like 100 cycles, you realize you are paying monstrously more for these "savings." Just try and get in touch with these battery sellers 8 months after you bought it. they will have disappeared. I can almost guarantee those are green wrapped Sony VTC4’s or VTC5’s, which were rated at 30a continuous discharge. Depending on when that original battery pack was made it could also be Sony VTC5a which I believe are no longer made. They changed to chemical lithium ion in VTC6 and VTC6a. I’m guessing VTC5a now… idk?! Lol it’s really dependent on the date of the original battery pack. The Sony VTC6 and VTC6a are the best high drain 18650 battery cells you can get that are available to the public. The VTC5 and VTC5a weren’t meant for private purchase, but vaping mechanical mod’s with low ohm build’s the Sony VTC4 and VTC5’s were the best battery to handle those high drain build’s and were low mah and designed to drain quickly but safely under higher continuous amps. Been a while since I needed quality high drain 18650’s and I haven’t kept up with the technology like I used to

      What model Shark is it? Are you thinking to swap the batteries such that when one runs out, you will switch to the other? The issue maybe charging the battery that is not on the vacuum. With Dyson, the charger plugs right into the battery.

      @engineerable  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The capacity is great, I still use it, and I wish I also had a double capacity battery on my V7/V8 vacuums, but I did discover an issue that I'm publishing another video about. When the battery was new, sometimes the vacuum wouldn't start after taking it off the charger (This problem went away after several charge cycles.) Pulling the battery out and putting it back in somehow resets things, and it works fine again. I returned the first battery thinking it was bad. The next battery has been acting the same way. So I left out the screws, and put a strap around the lower part of the handle and the battery to hold it in place while making it easy to remove and put back in if it's not working. It's an annoying workaround for a battery that should work correctly, but for me it's worth it for the capacity. I can run the vacuum cleaner on high for the same amount of time as the original battery would run on low.

    I had the same issue with my V6 absolute. The batteries aren't "dead" after 30 seconds of running in max mode, the vacuum shuts itself off for one reason or another likely to protect its circuitry. This may be due to heat generation, or because the cells can no longer discharge at the rate required for max mode.
    When the light starts flashing blue and it seems like it is "dead" you just need to plug it in for a second or 2 to reset the system, then when you remove it from the charger it will work again. When this starts happening to your vacuum I suggest running it in normal mode and it should last for a considerable amount of time.

I had recently replaced the air filters and used cheap ones off Amazon. I'm wondering if these filters do not flow as well as the oem dyson filters therefore causing the batteries to heat up faster because of the higher air flow resistance.

    One needs to remove two screws, at the back on the handle and on the front of the battery pack. To remove that second screw you need to remove the refuse container. I am not sure how. Yeah! At 2:56 this is explained. "Pop it down again." Wow it is that simple.
    Thanks. I have replaced my battery. Unfortunately with a non double capacity battery but still, the old one was weak.

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad my video helped you repair your Dyson. As for reusing old battery cells, that is not recommended. Individual cells have no charging, discharging or short circuit protection, meaning that they could overheat and create fires. You should only use individual cells with built in protection.

    • @TimothyTakemoto
      @TimothyTakemoto 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@engineerable You may be right but I have been ripping cells from LAP top packs and using them in my bike torches for about 10 years and I have not gone up in flames, yet, nor experienced more than a few sparks so I think I will keep at it.
      I took it apart. I did short one of the batteries a bit with resultant sparks and smoke but all the cells are out now and two are in my charger.
      With PC battery packs there are usually one or two bad and tree or four good batteries.
      I will see how this goes.
      I recently found out that some, at least some Samsung cells may have a mechanical anti fire protection mechanism such that when gas expands inside them due to heat, they cease to provide any voltage, which would explain why they can be made to work a little bit again by "venting" them (but they don't hold current).
      th-cam.com/video/HetEDTDmJmw/w-d-xo.html
      So while short circuit protection is there, at least in theory (in batteries in Dyson stuff) hammers, and excessive heat can turn them into fireworks. Here we go
      th-cam.com/video/CUgbmCSmSNY/w-d-xo.html
      I am inclined to think that cheap batteries from alixepress are going to be more dangerous than batteries harvested from PC and big brand clelaners.

  • @jacobhauenstein

    the reason the batteries die so early is likely the extreme temperature the cells get to after using max mode for over 30 seconds. If you can feel it through the plastic, the batteries are much hotter than what you feel. 18650s should not be run too hot or too cold, both significantly reduce their life.

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point, I never paid attention or noticed the heat generated by the batteries in max mode. With the stock battery, I use max mode for short durations because of how quickly it drains the battery. With the double cell/capacity battery, the current draw per cell will be cut in half, and therefore shouldn't be an issue with overheating the cells.

      @@engineerable it’s really shoddy engineering (or intentional for planned obsolescence) that the cells are allowed to get so hot. Very sneaky. They should at least offer an option for 2P packs, or 21700 alternatives for 18650 batteries. I’m just gonna have to DIY a Molicel P42A pack for my Dyson V10, or at least a 2 or 3P pack of cheap 18650s, it’s just a hassle though. Guess I will keep the ‘stem’ of the battery pack intact, use an original board/BMS and then the underside can be some cells stuffed in a box, lol. Won’t look pretty but it will work much better.

    • @patric3917
      @patric3917 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That might also be the reason why dyson themselves do not offer any larger-capacity batteries.. They would run too hot if they allowed them to run for much longer and a smaller capacity battery will limit this runtime.
      Not going to buy a dyson ever again. Any future portable vacuum-cleaner will be required to have a external replaceable battery. My battery is close to being useless after ~4 years (they say 15 years) of minor use and a replacement 2500mAh battery should not be this expensive.
      Perfect vacuum-cleaner would be one that is able to use standard makita/ryobi/milwaukee/etc battery-packs..

      Here's the link to the wall mount: amzn.to/3fO9zyR and I've updated the description with it.
      I will say that the extended battery life has been awesome, but I've had some issues with this battery. The vacuum won't always start running after a full recharge of the battery. The only solution I have found is to remove the battery from the vacuum and then reinstall it. Then the vacuum works fine until it inevitably doesn't start again at some point after a recharge, and you have to repeat the removal/reinstall process. Therefore I've now removed the screws, and use a Velcro strap to hold the battery on the handle. It's slightly inconvenient, but I don't want to give up the longer runtime (especially on high).
      I will have an updated video discussing the issue and solution.

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  ปีที่แล้ว

      Planning to test those, but I've heard that you really need to use a 8-9ah 18V battery, because the voltage drop doesn't make it last long with the lower Ah batteries, since the Dyson battery uses one extra cell. The ideal power tool battery would be the 24V MAX batteries (~21V nominal like Dyson)

      @@xmortall Yeah, I don't know if the V6 double holder would even fit the V8. So, if you go power tool battery, the 20V DeWalt batteries are better than 18V. 6ah+ 18V battery will probably be ok, but the smaller ah 18V packs will drop voltage too quickly, and trip the low voltage cutoff circuitry. My friend says that the 8-9ah Milwaukee 18V batteries work forever, but the 5ah doesn't work great.

      How'd you know I'm a door-to-door vacuum cleaner battery salesman?... Do a little research, and you'll find out that I'm not a seller of these batteries. It's some random Chinese company. I bought one because I needed a replacement battery, and wanted higher capacity. The capacity is great, but I did discover an issue that I'm publishing another video about. Sometimes the vacuum won't start after taking it off the charger. Pulling the battery out and putting it back in somehow resets things, and it works fine again.

    • @engineerable
      @engineerable  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have noticed that after the first few charges where sometimes the battery would need to be removed and reinserted to get the vacuum to start, it no longer exhibits this issue. Now it works every time when taken off the charger.

Had to take the battery pack out of the Dyson and put it back in to reset. Did this a few times and no issues since then. I've done somecapacity and life cycle tests on 3rd party Chinese batteries for drills, and the main thing is they lie about the capacity. The capacity is usually at least 1ah less than what is advertised. The life cycle seems to be in the 400-500 cycle range, which is typical to be expected from Li-ion.

      Do you have links to these batteries? The V6 motor is rated at 350W. For a 21.6V pack, the max current is 350W/21.6V = 16.2A . The OEM packs have to use reliable cells at lower capacities that have higher discharge rates, probably in the 30A range to play it safe.
