I cannot believe the negative comments on here. This is Rachel Barton Pine. She is an amazingly accomplished violinist. She came off as friendly, and knowledgable. She lost one foot, and had the other severely, and permanently mangled many years ago in a freak Metra train accident. The conductor didn't see her exiting, and closed the doors too early. Her violin bag was caught in the door, and she was dragged by the train. She has persevered though this to become a top tier soloist. Metra changed their way of signaling the doors to be closed because of her horrible accident.

So people shouldn't criticise her performance just out of sheer sympathy: Just because she suffered through something that traumatic means we should be forgiving of her attitude? How demeaning and patronising is that! Seriously, that's a pretty sad attitude. I'd have to hear her other work before I can have an opinion on her, but her performances in the passages she played here were *quite* questionable, and I'm sure she can cope with criticism. She's a grown adult, you know.

vibratingstring Don't know what you mean by loser part! I've played for almost all of my life., and have always enjoyed it. I also enjoy hearing others play. And that was the reason I felt disappointed. I for one have been a diversified player, from classic, to country, to bluegrass, a bit of jazz, and love to play the blues. Violin works wonders with the "Blues". Even backup on Rock music. Tho it's not my fav.

I don't know how many commenters here know Rachel's story. She was in a near-fatal accident involving a commuter train in 1995 where she lost one leg and the other was severely mangled. That antique Amati violin got caught in the door as she was exiting, pinning her shoulder to the train and dragging her over 300 ft. before she fell beneath the wheels. To have carried on after such an ordeal shows a lot of strength and character, and I think some of the things said here show a lot of crudeness and ignorance.

My, my: a little cranky this morning, are we? Where did you read that I "claimed to be [a] musician? I was/am an amateur violinist, and did study for four years at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston (you may have heard of it…), and before that, studied in Philadelphia with the late Edgar Ortenberg, violinist with the Budapest String Quartet (maybe you've also heard of that group?), and at the time, head of the string department at the Settlement School in Philadelphia…
Mr. Ortenberg always had his Guarneri instrument-a pretty good violin, Paganini played one-ready at hand in its open case on the dining room table, and on a very few occasions did, in fact, pick it up to illustrate a passage for me. I can also point you to several videos here showing Jascha Heifetz using his Stradivarius to teach his Master Class at UCLA (long after he had ceased giving concerts).
As for what I post on TH-cam: I put up music I like to listen to and think others might also want to hear; I wasn't aware that one isn't allowed to post anything but one's own performances.
So you're so smart musically? Identify the background music I used-composer and source-as the "Bounty" (R.I.P.) docks in Gloucester harbor, and tell me why it's appropriate.

I absolutely LOVE hearing artists divulge upon the challenges and feats throughout their musical career. It gives so much more depth to not only the musician but to their composition as well. I find it a privilege to hear someone as talented as her speak, not only is she articulate but it gives much needed insight to the ins and outs of playing at such a high level.

What is so risky about this? the violin doesn't kill you when you doing it wrong.
More risky in the performance sense. Very easy to mess up if you lose concentration. They're incredibly technically challenging and demanding, requiring so much attention, time and discipline to even get the notes right.
Also.. this might be somewhat unrelated, but if you practice a lot and not properly, with something so strenuous on the fingers and wrists, you can definitely injure yourself, get tendonitis etc.

I'm not really understanding where you got that I was being cocky or why you had to call me out on my comment...The person i was replying to was asking why the Paganini caprices were supposedly risky to play. My comment was about the piece, not about the instrument, and the second half of my comment about injuring yourself, I definitely agree with you that it can happen with pretty much any instrument.

I absolutely hate it when someone puts their instrument at the pedestal above all the others, they brag about how difficult it is when it comes to technicalities, to the emotion it conveys and pretty much everything about it.. And there are a lot of people that do that. I got that impression, maybe I'm wrong here. Again, had nothing to do with your comment, I understand what you're saying.
P. S. Apart from the injuries, if you practice incorrectly, you also learn it the wrong way and it's difficult to correct it later on.

+Badaxxe ...and it may be risky, but I don't think it's nearly as risky; you can hide mistakes with Paganini - he was, after all, a violinist. I think that the Tchaikovsky violin concerto is much more difficult; the passages are not very violinist friendly. Or the Beethoven. Super transparent. Paganini is tough but written by someone who's fingers knew what the instrument is capable of, unlike Tchaikovsky, who just had an understanding of it, not perfect knowledge. Beethoven just made his concerto really transparent. A a loooot of violinists have done this kind of thing before, so claiming it's "rarely performed in succession?" Waaay too much clickbait. And lastly, that kind of clickbaitiness is really demeaning to an amazing violinist like Rachel Barton Pine. They treat her like a fiddle player. She's a concert violinist, for goodness' sake.
You know, I can play all of the caprices. I will not play them, but I can talk all you want about how difficult it is.

Mengwen Zhu I think that's the whole point of those complaining. If the title is lame, but it is accurate, then the product (video) must also be lame. If the title sounds lame and therefore it is changed to sound more exciting, at a cost of no longer being accurate, then the title is indeed click bait. If they wanted an exciting title, they should have produced an exciting video. I thought it was okay, but I wouldn't have clicked on it if the title would have been an accurate description of the video. The title was chosen in the best interest of business (or most likely to generate income). It is a violation of TH-cam guidelines, but if it generates income, well ... TH-cam is a business too, and when money talks, everything else is semantic satiation.

I learned violin at age 7. I played in concerts an was chosen for the California Youth Orchestra to tour in Europe. I chose my guitar and voice to play in the U.S. I somewhat regret the decision. After watching Hilary play I should have gone forward with the violin, although I did put a transducer on the bridge to make it electric over the sound system. Hilary is phenomenal!!!!
+Bobby Wilson I used an electric bridge piece also, when I spent a couple years doing Country Western, and a lot of outdoor stuff. I still kept my reg bridge, but times change, and so do the necessities of doing the same job.
Gahdamn these comments are bunch of stupid. But anyways...got to see her years ago with the Nashville Symphony. She was so gracious. Her musicality was untouchable and her encore...we hid our eyes so as not to be blinded by her greatness. Go see her if you get that chance.
wow stick to reviewing vocal music. this is one of the prime examples of an absolutely terrible 'violinist'. (at her best) Just to set the record straight, any violinist (and by that I mean someone who actually performs classical music for a living - i.e. symphony/soloist/chamber - ) will vomit in an extraordinary manner if exposed to this type of repulsive playing for any length of time. And i don't just mean this video: I mean anything she attempts to play. so i say again; any violinist - or musician for that matter - who knows anything about what he/she is doing will be hiding their eyes and plugging their ears for a very different reason than what you seem to naïvely be suggesting.

Ah the lovely phrasing of her playing perfectly encapsulates the beauty of her violin! I think that this interpretation is by far my favorite, given that the technique shown is beyond supreme and musicality divine. I especially loved the ferocity of the last variation.

Rachel has had a difficult life journey, but is most amazing and beautiful. I remember when I was living in Chicago some years ago and Rachel, who is from there, was on her way to a lesson as a student if I remember correctly and fell under the train and lost her leg. I was so upset for her at the time, but obviously she is very strong and has made great strides in life and in art. Bravo Rachel!!

The risk is saying that you can perform these advanced pieces in front of an audience. If you mess up your credibility has a chance to be questioned. Credibility is what gets jobs. I'm assuming that her financial income is based on her violin skills so the risk may be greater to her. This is what separates professionals from hobbyist.
being a musician I know that when you do mess up it needs to be so horrible that even experienced musicians can tell most mess ups are never even acknowledged

Mark O'Conner's self-serving attack on Suzuki is off-putting, and makes him seem like a jerk. His claims have been proven to be false, and, but even if they were true, they are irrelevant to the effectiveness of the Suzuki method.

I learned a valuable thing from this video. Before now, I'd never associated a Wall Street Journal-titled article with the term "click-bait". And yet, here we have a title clearly promising a violinist playing one of the riskiest pieces written(if that is, in fact, how violinists refer to the twenty-four Caprices; I'm not a violinist, so I couldn't say), and we have six minutes of interview punctuated here and there by a few bars of music.
Listen up, WSJ. If you want to interview a violinist about her talents and undertakings, you should do that. And there will be a substantial group of people interested in watching that. But don't slap a misleading title on a view to garner clicks. You're supposed to be reputable journalists; act like it. Leave the click-bait titles to the Huffington Post and BuzzFeed.
Rachel is such a boss... her response to "what's the one you steel yourself for?" was "none. I'm fearless." (In so many words.) YES!

Bo, you are clearly not a musician. Luckily I am. She hits a lot of the notes flat and I counted numerous mistakes with her finger positioning and bow control. Whether it was nerves or not. So before you go on a tirade against someone for having an opinion, maybe think to yourself that it may be an educated one. The fact that you think she played them just fine, tells me that you are either tone deaf, or just dont know enough to be able to tell. Her playing may not have been atrocious, she obviously does posses skill. But she clearly needed more practice before doing a video about that particular music.

J. S. Bach's 6 solo partitas & sonatas are way more impressive than Paganini's masturbatory pieces, (and they make far more musical sense). Check out Hilary Hahn's version of the JSB pieces!
I started playing violin five years ago it took me over six months to learn all these pieces. Drove me nuts.

Violin-chin.
This famous violin piece is an inspiration. My daughter age 9 has just started learning a version of this, variation 1 and yet it is only Grade 3 ABRSM !. I'm sure that she will make up a few of her own variations, using some of the techniques that her violin Teachers have not yet taught her, (and annoy them because of it). I say let them try different things if they want to, so as to keep their interest up, but it's hard find any teachers that are flexible enough to vary from their routines, even though we don't have any more exam targets for the next 18 months. On piano I have switched her to Grade 5 Jazz which suits her better, (she can play her own variations), and she may go that way also on violin as she wants to improvise variations of pieces on that too.

That violin sounds crumby. And I thought she played sloppily too. I don't play, so don't bother telling me I can't play as well as she can. The point is it doesn't sound precise.

Might be that WSJ was using the wrong type of microphone to pick up musical instruments, probably used their normal interview mic that's tuned to balance voices and stop the highs and lows from peaking.
