I am a kind of old-fashioned player and did - up to now - not follow this kind of barock-playing. I admit that I even looked a little bit down to these "specialists". But after I saw Rachels wonderful lesson with her masterfully played examples I am about to open myself to this approach and will buy myself a barock bow as soon as possible. Thankyou for this great lesson and for the inspiration, Rachel.

I hope this isn't a replacement for the 28-video series mentioned in your edition of the sonatas and partitas. Not because I expect you to stick to your word (I know plans change), but because I could literally binge-watch the entire series fascinated by the things you say. (and because your demonstrations are an excuse for me to listen to your beautiful, thoughtful playing)

7:51 "never rolled down" ... How do you know though? The Baroque era was full of surprises! I don't think I've seen a document that ever read "NEVER roll the chords down!" ...and I've done a lot of research with the aid of universities and other institutions around the world. Mainly Bach research! I learned that the Bach suites for example were written for "piccolo-cello" but in a copy of the score, the word "piccolo" had been scrubbed off... so people these days believe the suites are for the standard cello, rather the viola da gamba, or alto viola is far more appropriate. Anyway, I've digressed!

With regards to performing chords in baroque music please consider this quote on page No.47 from Professor Stanley Ritchie's 2016 book entitled- The Accompaniment in "Unaccompanied" Bach '...one must never begin a chord before the beat or roll it downward'. Also, I'll refer you to chapter No.11 in the same work regarding the general execution of chords in baroque performance.
@@tyronerothsey1903 Of course, she does. She's a celebrated performer and wonderful musician. I don't doubt that my research is wrong 'in places'... but I don't think it should be dismissed entirely. Who knows: perhaps Ms. B-P got some things wrong. In regards to Mr Professor Stanley Ritchie's works, all fine. However people such as the great Charles Beare to Mr Peter Sheppard Skærved have said that "official" publications from about 100 weren't entirely correct in their writings - particularly people claiming that Baroque players NEVER EVER played with vibrato. In recent years, we discovered that some string musicians played with very "sparingly" vibrato due to the gut strings they were playing. It's not totally unrealistic that some musicians from the genuine Baroque era "rolled down" their chords in an effort to create a certain effect. We will never know since we weren't there. Finding a baroque bow on the internet is fraught with problems. Most that appear are certainly not baroque bows, having modern concave sticks, even the snakewood ones. Possibly in the USA this is different but here in Europe that is what appears from a search. Frustrating! Finding your videos has transformed my thinking, so I hope (and believe) the playing will follow.
