I go by law of averages. Just like in life, luck falls in your favor but bad luck happens too. In a large sample size it probably evens out. Jordan winning more titles in fewer years is the main thing. If Lebron wants to take the mantle, he has to either win a 4peat or win 7 rings with 7 mvps.
I’ve heard all the arguments but concluded an argument for Lebron has a counter argument for Jordan.
Jordan has pippen. Lebron has wade, bosh, kyrie/love and AD.
Jordan has Phil. Had lebron won more titles with Spo and lue they would be legendary too.
Jordan had a better gm. Lebron started player empowerment and klutch sports mafia.
Jordan had weak opponents in finals. Lebron played in weaker east to make all those finals appearances.
If you say Lebron took cavs team to finals I would say yes that was impressive. That only proved to me Lebron had a better start for his career than Jordan. But once you get talent, I expect you to win.
I’ll give some other goat examples from other sports. I’m a big Montana fan. When Brady won his fourth ring, I still had Montana as the goat qb. When Brady won his 5th against the falcons with that crazy comeback I crowned him the goat. In tennis, I was a sampras fan. Then Federer took over the mantle. Now it’s djokovic.

This is why it’s important to get the perspective of players that played in both eras that Jordan and Bron played in themselves. Starbury played at least 6 NBA seasons while Bron was playing and played at least 4 seasons when Jordan was playing.

The only time Caldwell Jones played center for the 76ers was when Dawkins was not on the floor.
However, Magic never guarded Jones during these times--Chones or Landsberger did.
And Magic never guarded Dawkins at any time in that game.
Before the Championships it has been noted that Jordan seemed nonhuman in the presence and I witnessed it from afar with his unnatural ability to play basketball.

My top 10 based on what I saw growing up.
I grew up in a Lakers household, my dad and his friends would be so loud about it, always had the A.M. going with Chick Hearn over whoever was on TV. By the time the Bulls beat the Suns, my dad couldn’t hold it back anymore, he said Jordan is the best, excitedly. And then all my friends that are Lakers fans, had their admissions that Jordan is the best, over Magic, over Kobe, over Shaq. And that is hard for homers to say.
The most interesting thing about Lebron falling out with people in the media is that these pundits start switching up their perspectives completely. You'd think that these pundits would keep similar stances despite the fall out. Has Charles Barkley after shit on Jordan after they fell out?

So here's the problem with Marbury's assessment (which he's wrong on by the way).
LBJ is not the best all around player he or we have ever seen, it's MJ. Unfortunately , like Marbury most of us did not get to see MJ play LBJ's role of Point (forward).
MJ was however, during Doug Collins last year (the last 24 games of the season I believe) asked to play Point Guard and these are the numbers he produced:
13 triple doubles in 24 games his averages during this span of time was the following:
39.8 minutes a game.
30.4 points (LBJ averages 27.1 in a much softer league), 9.2 rebounds (LBJ averages 7.5),
10.7 assists, (LBJ averages 7.4) 2.5 steals LBJ averages 1.5) , 0.9 blocks (while 3 inches taller LBJ averages 0.7) , FG% 49.8 (LBJ averages 50.6 he also finishes at the rim more often in his career), 3P% 27.3 (LBJ 34.8), FT% 88.8 (LBJ 73.6), Turnovers PG 3.8 (for reference LBJ averages 3.5 per game).
When asked to do what LBJ does regularly< MJ was superior in most of the categories: Points, rebounds, assists, steals, Blocks, FT%.
So we need to stop with this narrative that LBJ is the best all around player we've ever seen, he's not, he's just the one that we've seen do it most often.

i've been an nba fan since 1969. i was never a jordan fan. i didn't like him when he entered the league, thinking "he's just a flashy ball-hog". then i hated him because he constantly killed my knicks. but it became very clear, very soon, that he was on a different level. once he matured on the court and allowed himself to be coached, i realized that he was the best player i had ever seen, bar none. and he only continued to get better, even as his athleticism started fading. in my mind, mj is far and away the goat of basketball. or at least, so far. and i am not buying what the wemby-coming-for-jordan cult is selling. at least not yet.

Doesn't have much of a bag, shooting outside of three feet isn't his thing, rebounding avg, Defense LBJ was a great off ball defender but that was his early years and has never been a shutdown defender and only got worse with age. So what is his all-round play passing? So much more to the game that others played so much better

Mike had back to back seasons with 100+ blocks, and averaged 70+ blk a season as a guard & made all-def 1st team 9 times. Lebron a forward has never had 100 blk’s in a season, and averages less than 60 blk’s a year for his career & made all-def 1st team 5 times.
Mike (SG) had 10 seasons with 100+ offensive rebounds playing with no def 3-sec rule or charge arc. Lebron (SF) only has 4 such seasons playing with both rules in place his entire career which kept the paint cleaner.
6 assists per game career is #1 all-time for SG’s. Mike averaged 5.3 apg career regular season, 5.7 apg career in the playoffs, and exactly 6 apg career in the Finals. He was also one of the best passing SG’s ever.
And when you put that all together it is clear that Mike was shooting/scoring, rebounding and defending at level Lebron literally never has, and while the edge in passing goes to Lebron, Mike’s passing numbers are as good as it gets for a SG. He (Mike) is the most complete player ever.
When they announce every player in the top 75 all time everyone knew who would be number one. As each player showed up on the court and the number one player was center court, every player was looking at him different then the rest that was called. You could see it in the faces and no other player had that reaction. Thay is the different level that MJ is on because they all knew that would be named number one and was starstruck when he walked on the court.

because the Wilt that set all those records was the most selfish player in history....wasn't until he stopped setting those records and his scoring _literally_ halved did he start winning championships. Also, most of his records are regular season records, MJ holds the most playoff records of all time. Jordan's playoff scoring average is 33.4ppg. Wilt's playoff scoring average is 22.5ppg. How you perform in the post season is _far_ more important than your performances in the regular season. That is why Wilt is not the GOAT...

Steph lost me when he called Lebron the “most complete player ever.” That’s one of the fakest narratives in sports history. It’s all predicated on him stacking pts/rebs/asts. You can’t be complete if you don’t play defense. That’s not up for debate
