- EPISODE 3: 9th Place - Scriabin Prelude Op. 11 No. 15 in Db Major. Fascinating note about Scriabin performing this piece:
"Skryabin entered Moscow Conservatoire in January 1888. His piano professor was Vasilii Safonov, also a prominent conductor. Safonov greatly admired Skryabin’s artistry, especially his command of tone colour, as the following anecdote shows (Safonov sometimes taught at home):
'One time I just dropped off. I wake up to some charming sounds. I didn’t even want to move, so as not to break the magic spell. Then I ask: ‘What is it?’ It turned out to be his D♭ major prelude [op. 11, no. 15]. That is one of the best memories of my life.'" This is really beautiful. To me this peace gives me an overwhelming feeling of coming home after a long journey.
For me it sounds like running on the beach, the sensation I feel is the same when I go for a run and hear the waves, my breath, and sound of the foot striking the sand.
Such a beautiful performance, Marc! And your commentary is much appreciated as always :). I hope the weather cools down where you are. It's so hot here, too, I'm sick of it 😫
Really nice interpretation, Marc. I might go with the eagle idea myself. This prelude, imo, evokes the imagery of walking alone by the shore of a lake in the very early morning just before sunrise with mists arising from the lake. And then an eagle (or some other bird) traverses the sky above the lake. A very common potential scenario here in the WNC mountains. I love your playing!
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like our imaginations are similar!
Speaking of WNC, I just spent a month in Asheville (for near daily hiking with family)…sure is lovely out there. Got back home 3 days ago.
@@MarcPlaysPiano I love that!! I live in Hendersonville, so you were in my neck of the woods and I'm sure you found some of my familiar haunts. And yes, similar imaginations, for sure!
