Hi Keith & Michelle sorry to hear about your disaster at Glebe Leisure this camp site is only about 5 miles from where we live and we have stayed there and even if you did get a fully serviced pitched the drainage is a disaster you need about 1/2 mile of grey waste pipe then the drains are blocked with leaves and stones, not so long ago the site was invaded by traveller people. If we had known we could have offered you a fully serviced pitch on our drive for the weekend 😅

Don't think I would have stayed. You'd think any site owner would only use hard standings during this wet spell. Not many sites using grass pitches at the moment. I see lots of poor reviews about the staffs attitude & rudeness towards customers.
One to avoid by the looks.
Oh yes, you got it in one, if it doesn't sound right, then it probably isn't. What a terrible experience. It's the beginning of the season and a lot of the staff lack experience and confidence. At least you found a helpful camper to support you. We are booked on a site with all grass pitches in April and I have a worry that we may have to abort or change our plan. Glad you kept calm and did the right thing. In hindsight, home for Easter was the right choice this year, the same as us ! :) Trev.

Wow what an experience..... I carry inch thick pieces of ply to settle the steadies onto. Also good for putting under the drive wheels to aid traction in situations like you experienced.

We were in Wales this weekend, towed on and off a grass pitch, car, caravan, awning all plastered in mud, difference was we knew what we were going into, having given up trying to find another site, as you found out, all fully booked. We’ve been to a couple of sites where we have arrived, set up and then left within the hour because our gut told us something wasn’t right. So sorry to hear of your experience.
To be fair anyone with a caravan or motorhome has to have at least 1 bad experience at a nightmare site and I’ve visited many sites in our caravan/s over the last 23 years and had more than 1, so welcome to the club and hopefully it’ll be your only bad experience.
Do these sites not realise or understand what excellent customer service looks like? Clearly not, or else you would have been contacted in advance about the state of the site and even if they hadn’t I would have expected them to have gone out of there way to resolve this where everyone would be happy.
Social Media and TH-cam are extremely powerful tools to vent your frustration at poor service and can have an immediate impact on someone’s business and snowball out of control, it’s a shame they didn’t think about this before dealing with you both!
Many thanks for the video and this site will go in my little black book of sites to avoid. I hope you both had a lovely Easter despite the drama and manage to get out shortly in the caravan.

We sort of feel your pain, as we had a home holiday!. we had planned to go away Wednesday until Monday, over Easter and it was also my birthday on Good Friday, so really looking forward to going away, we got the caravan all packed up and ready to go Tuesday night. Wednesday morning I was given a heads up to check and found on the website that the site was closed to all arrivals until further notice. We decided to just call it for the weekend and make the most of it at home. One of our relatives was currently on this site and told us it was wise to stay away, it got that water logged, caravans and motor homes had sunk. A tractor was called in to evacuate the site. Fortunately they closed the site and didn’t let people on to get stuck. Hopefully the site learnt from your struggles and didn’t let anyone else suffer the same pain as yourself and closed the site. Hopefully you have taken some positives away from your weekend? Ours was the money we would have spent on site fees we spent in the garden Center.

Ah, love watching you guys even if it’s it turns out to be a non event. Seriously though, really sorry that you didn’t get your Easter break away in Holly. Thank you for being so honest about everything. Don’t think we would want to patronise those sites after what happened to you. Our caravan dealership hadn’t even sent off our claim to Coachman for the damage after our fridge door fell off when we spoke to them just before Easter so we are not particularly happy at the moment either. We’ve got child locks fitted now thanks to you Keith and Michele as we are due to be away for almost three weeks soon. Better luck next time! Amanda and Paul. ❤

WOW! that was bad luck!!! - especially with that second site - talk about raising your hopes!!!!
We had a similar problem (with mud) last weekend - at a grass CS in York - perfect location - it was soaking when we got there & left, our neighbours in their twin axle & Land Rover Disco made a right mess when they left, but we unhitched on the tarmac then used the motormover a short distance to the pitch & the same back & everything was fine. Also, as our nose is 70kg, I can actually lift the jockey wheel over any bumpy bits - or you could put a gas bottle in the back to make the nose lighter, just a thought.

Hi Keith and Michele we have to pay £40 for our Green Waste bin to be emptied. Sorry to hear your weekend was a washout, we were away on a hard standing pitch and even that had water coming through the hard standing. We were on a corner pitch and the water was coming from the pitches on the level above ours luckily this was at the back end of our pitch so not quite as bad, awnings are only allowed on the hard standing but pegs can go on the grass which was very boggy and caused a right mess to our awning. I’m glad you got your car and caravan off that mud though. You’d have been paddling all weekend. Ridiculous. No chance of getting on a new site at Easter. We tend to avoid Bank Holidays but we’re retired xx

We’re so sorry for you, I can’t think of anything worse than having to go home after looking forward to a weekend away. Katie and I tend to go for club sites as you know exactly what you’re going to get. I’m sure it’ll go perfectly next time you’re away…get it booked now to give you something to look forward to.
Contradicting what I’ve just said, we’re booked into the Secret Garden near Wisbech in a couple of weeks, never been before but it’s supposed to be quirky, fingers crossed! 🤞🏼

Sorry to see this, I must admit we never consider going away at Easter. Although Easter is at different times of the year the weather is always bad. Look on the bright side you have got your disaster out of the way early in the year so fingers crossed rest of the season will be fine. Following Facebook groups many campsites were cancelling stays because of the state of the pitches. I don’t know what planet your site was on, thanks for naming it one to avoid.

Hi, so sorry about your weekend, we also had a disaster, we were all hitched up ,checked the lights, nothing, the electrics would not work, but it would be worse to turn up at site and it was a disaster, its so upsetting unpacking van, with no holiday had. I was so sorry for you, I would have been upset too, as you say you have the caravan all packed and to have to go home. I felt when then didnt answer the buzzer it didnt bode well. I hope your weekend was better at home for you x

It’s unbelievable that any grass pitches would be open, what a shambles. Certainly wouldn’t want to stay there. I am so sorry that you have been put through all that stress. You could have stayed in the caravan on the drive, I did just that during Covid.

Shame, it messed up your weekend, we are away this weekend and may have the same problems hope not.. it's funny hearing the issues upu have with the council and pot holes, it's a world wide talking point, I used to goto china for work and even they had the same issues !!

How awful for you.We got stuck on our arrival at campsite on Friday. The wardens on site were lovely. Unhitched our caravan got our car out of mud. Then they put caravan in place (on grass) then made sure we could get our car on and off grass. Had a great weekend and weather was gorgeous. Not something we say often in Lake District

What a total shambles. I agree with the comments here about not taking bookings on grass pitches. We just had three nights on a small CL outside Northallerton and when we booked the owners said they were only taking bookings on their two hard standing pitches until the ground conditions improved significantly.
We recently travelled by rail from Yorkshire to West Sussex and I cannot remember seeing so much standing water in the fields for virtually the entire journey. The poor farmers must be tearing their hair out and wondering if they are going to be able to get any crops grown, sewn or harvested, unless they’re growing rice.

The biggest shock was how bad your car was in the mud, maybe getting All Season Tyres or Winter Tyres for the cold wet winter months. Good luck with the next trip.

Sorry that your weekend away didn’t work out as expected. I remember 15 years ago I was on a tent camping weekend in the middle of forest. My Jaguar got completely stuck and I had to be pulled out by a Land Rover. Ever since then I’ve only ever bought Land rovers and Range Rovers. I’ve helped quite a few people at clay pigeon shoots and campsites over the years. 4wd’s maybe gas guzzlers to some, but they are bloody useful in bad weather and difficult terrain.

Hi there..oh my goodness..we feel for you..that happened to us about 4 years ago we were towed on and dragged off . The Park should not have been open..where the grass pitches are concerned. I had the same thing you had. The Campsite said we have got some plastic you can drive over so you won’t get stuck. I am well and truly stuck with a motor caravan. It’s 6 inches deep I’m not going till Saturday so they will tire me out, have to pick dog up over mud.

Sorry you had such a bad experience at this site, we learnt our lesson years ago on a private site, can't remember the name but it was rough (staff and pitches). So we only book CAMH club and cl sites now. Good luck on your next sneaky weekend away.😀

What a nightmare you had.
I don’t know what part of the country you’re from, but when we lived in Rugby, the brown bin payment started about 5 years ago.
We moved to Leicestershire a couple of years ago, and we had to pay for the green bin here too.
We don’t go on sites very often as we have a motorhome, but when we do, I always get the booking in print to make sure I have in writing what I have booked - I’m sure you will be doing the same from now on.
Also, we never go away at Bank Holidays - can’t be bothered with the traffic & crowds of people around.
Glad you got your refund, it paid for your Chinese at least 🤣

Same around n wales lots of sites weren't opening easter because of water logged pitches we managed to find one but that was a struggle getting on and off.😊

Sorry to hear about your disaster of a weekend! That's one site to miss for sure!! Probably OK in the summer but I hate rude people and like you say they should have cancelled. Even a few days before may have given you a bit of notice to plan. I hope you still managed to have a good Easter... planning some more adventures. At least you made some memories eh? We are currently on a C&CC site. Had booked grass but they rang us last week and told us the grass was too wet so swapped us to hard standing FOC. That’s how to customer service!

How very annoying. I cannot bear bad customer service. They shouldn't be in business. I hope you reviewed them. Despite going home I hope you both had a Happy Easter. We were at Chatsworth and to rub salt in, the super pitch next to us was free from Friday until we left Yesterday. We have now moved onto Buxton CAMC site until Saturday. x

Had a miserable trip for same reason last October. People bogged down and stuck. Was pleased my Jag Xf AwD (now gone) had no issues but it was carnage. Hope my Mazda is ok in the mud

Oh no sorry about your wkend. The rain is terrible. We've had pay for our green bin for the past 2yrs here in Cheshire. £50 this yr and they only collect for 10mths. 😡. Better look nxt time. We're going Tewkesbury in May can see that being cancelled. Take care. X

What a shame. I suppose, we win some and lose some. Better things are coming your way! That's how I look at it. My own caravan holidays have been scuppered for a little while by a 17g little bundle of life! Believe it or not, a swallow. He's affectionally known as 'Otochan' (Japanese for daddy). He was born in a nest on our balcony in 2022 and from the start, for whatever reason took a shine to me. He returned last year, built a nest for his family across the road, but he himself decided he'd like to sleep in our house. He returned again (thankfully!) on the 28th of March and has spent every night sleeping in our house. He loves to come and play and has absolutely zero fear of my partner and I and remembered completely the layout of the home and responds to his name as usual. He's not a pet or a rescue bird. I think he must have inputted us as part of the family from when he was a chick in the nest. Even as a fledgling, he landed on my arm. Anyway, until he's fully settled, any trip away is off the schedule. I have taught him to use the bathroom window to go in and out, so that we can get away and he can enter and leave at will. It doesn't matter if the bathroom (fully waterproof and easy to clean) gets wet or dirty and the window is a sliding one.

Hi, we had exactly the same issues as you have had at the same site last February. You could almost be describing word for word our experience, from the misleading website to the rude staff and the sodden wet pitch which looked like a ploughed field. I also agree that the term 'fully serviced' is very misleading, they are not fully serviced unless you have metres and metres of hose and of waste pipe. Its a site that we will never ever recommend, nothing good to write about it at all

I really feel for both of you, as we had a similar experience in North Wales. We turned up to find that the pitch we were supposed to stay on for three nights was water logged. We were offered a rough, scruffy piece of waste land that had machinery on and evidence of fires. Not what we expected for Easter! We also went home, as everywhere was booked! We are trying to get a refund but as it was booked via Pitchup we have the added complication of getting money back from the site owner and Pitchup. It seems that Pitchup take 15%! Let's hope the weather improves soon🤞

Sad for you, we had a similar tale a few years ago, booked a long weekend at Shear Barn at Hastings. Turned out to be the most miserable dump you could imagine. Its so deflating to just turn round and come home again. Wished we'd read the reviews first!

Final solution is to let all your tyres down to about 8psi and it will drive out like a tank as long as you carry a compressor to re inflate,I've done this several times with no issues.

I literally stayed there last week as a halfway stop off to Sandford Holiday Park. I always chose hard standing, but we had no issue at Glebe leisure. Sanford Holiday park was twice as bad as that to be fair, but it’s all due to that heavy rainfall over the past week

Hi Keith and Michelle sorry to hear about your disaster trip, we were ment to go away in our caravan Easter Friday for three nights but got a call from the site Thursday saying the site is water logged so we got a refund, like you we had the van fridge all stocked with food ended up staying at home 😢

Oh lord!!! What a disaster ....I'm so shocked by the treatment you got from the site though.... they shouldn't be in a customer service centred role if that's how they behave!!!! Plus NOONE should be pitched on a grass surface which is water logged ...it's insane.... our site (The Severn Caravan Park near Welshpool) refused to book anyone in due to the amount of rain....no one could even park on grass because it was not safe... just common sense isn't it.....much love Paolo and Roger 'The Camp Caravanners'

I think Keith needs some practice driving in the mud. There is little difference between the drive systems of that Freelander and the Haldex in your car. We have the same system in our Taracco and it has pulled our heavy twin axle caravan across the mud several times on low profile road tyres (to the dismay of the wardens at a CMC site this weekend).
