    You're not paranoid. Those of us that work in cyber security know that "nothing is unhackable. It's just a matter of how much time and effort someone wants to use before moving on to a weaker (many of those) target.

    I hope this 1Password review was a useful introduction to the program. I'm curious - do you already use a password manager app? Why or why not? Leave a comment here to let me know.

      1. I have used 1Password for about 10 years now and think it is by far the best of all managers, because of their competent, clean design, great security practices, great stability, and great team of people.
      2. You can buy permanent non-subscription versions. But it is a bit convoluted. You must download the version from their website (mac or windows). Do NOT get the Mac App Store or Windows Store or any other store versions. Next, launch the downloaded version and it will have a link in the GUI underneath the prompt telling you to get a trial/account, there's a link saying something like "looking for a permanent license? we have those too".
      But the deal with the permanent versions is that you only get updates for that particular major version, so the next major version won't be included. And while I think they do discounts, it's still clear that the price of a major version and then the upgrades etc kinda ends up being in the same ballpark as a 1Password account. And having an account lets you sync the encrypted database to their servers so that you get robust backups, item histories/rollback ability going back through up to a year of past edits or deletions, etc. So in the end I broke down and bought a family subscription. It's worth it.
      3. I did look into self-hosting BitWarden on my own VPS, and it's kinda easy to keep up with security updates (you just setup a daily or weekly cronjob that updates the docker disk). But ehhh, the BitWarden GUI is absolutely disgusting. It lacks so many important features from 1Password and it feels gross to use. 😉

    Thanks for the review.
    I'm not sure that I would see as negative the omission of a free version.
    Nothing is free in this world, and I would be concerned that a company would not treat a free version and a paid for version in the same light.

    Long-time 1Password user here. There are several reasons I won't use anything else. First is they have never been hacked. (As you point out, nothing is hack-proof, but unlike other managers, 1Password has never been hacked.) But I don't bother with the double-blind passwords you mention because I use a YubiKey hardware 2FA method. A hardware key is critical for me keeping my stuff secure. I just hope more websites and services start adopting the YubiKey and Google Titan hardware keys because they do up the security level significantly.
    Secondly, its Watchtower system is really useful stating on top of passwords that have been compromised, and websites too. I keep my secure notes that would be hard to keep as safe anywhere else other than in my head, which is a hopeless forgetting machine. I keep all my software licenses and everything else that I would be keeping my notes apps otherwise and they are in no way secure by any stretch of the imagination. (I encrypt my boot drive, so that's secure.
    All in. all, I've tried the reset, and they aren't even close.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for a different perspective! All very good points and I agree with the 2FA keys - they are by far my favorite method of securing any account you have.

    If you are on a business account and leave the job, can you change the account to family and still have access to everything*? If you do choose to end the subscription, are you able to update passwords on accounts since you need the old password to create a new one? (I imagine I would never be able to remember the autogenerated passwords and the point is to not write them down anywhere.) *Obviously not the work related passwords if you have left the job, but personal stuff that might have been included.
    I had posted this originally as a reply to another question but thought it might be best "stand alone".

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whether you leave your business account or you terminate your personal subscription, you don’t lose your password vault at all. All that happens is that you can no longer add more passwords or sync them between devices, nor do you get the Watchtower feature.
      You can continue to use this static vault or you can export it to use in another program you decide to use. I hope that helps!

  • @ignskeletons

    Once upon a time I used to reuse old passwords and not use 2 factor authentication.
    I had a domain name on my GoDaddy account worth 5 figures almost fall victim to a very targetted Russian cyberattack where they were going as far as trying to spoof my phone number through my phone carrier. Switched to 1Password, now everything has randomly generated secure passwords + 2FA on everything. It's worth the tiny fee to get a good manager like 1Password.
    What I recommend for staying secure: 1Password, Protonmail + ProtonVPN, Malwarebytes, common sense.
    The #1 thing I like about 1Password is actually the fact that it does use the 1Password servers because I can go out and buy a new iPad, install the app, and I have access to my vault in 5 minutes even if it's a new device.

    As I’ve been reading one additional feature it may be good for 1pass to add is allowing users to change their password iterations to varying levels, especially as Theres recommendations from OWASP I believe of 300k+ password iterations for a hash *if I remember right*
    I’ve read a lot of others recommend bitwarden because of this but I’m unsure on open source of that program. I feel better paying for a program in this case and adjusting password length to be higher in characters.
    Thanks for your insight on this.

    Thanks for the very informative video. Quick question, you say the second layer of protection is a Device Security Key and it must be present in combination with your Master Password to open your vault and use passwords. If that is the case does that mean you cannot access your passwords from a unique device? i.e. one that has not previously been register and one which you will only use once?

    Great video! I just signed up for 1password but I am REALLY confused on how to use it. Is there a way to transfer all my passwords from my devices to 1 password? I have a Mac(reg computer) and mostly use my iPad or iPhone. Is there a video(current) showing the very basic on how to use 1password from the very beginning(setup) to transferring your passwords from my devices to 1password. Do I need to use my Mac to do this or can I do this using my iPhone/iPad? How do I use 1password to store a new password for a brand new web account that I just made? I am SO confused on how to use this! Apple as you know has their own PW generator how do I make 1password become the password generator and saves it to my devices? If there are videos on how to use this I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. Thank you very much!

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't have a video showing the whole setup process, but the process isn't really device-specific as much as it is based on where you currently store your passwords. If it's in your internet browser (like Chrome), then you'll just have to go in and export the passwords and then import them into 1Password. It's easier to do this on your Mac and then 1Password will sync everything to your iPhone/iPad.
      To make 1Password your default, just go into your phone/pad settings and search for "Password". There will be an option to make 1Password your default (if you've installed the app).

    Using 1Password as a non-IT homemaker was challenging. In fact, I deleted it. Setting up existing websites on my PC and Android was frustrating. It took me hours to set up 3, yes, 3 accounts (I won't get into the details because I don't know the IT jargon to explain). The app did not work on my Android. I tried the suggested fixes from the 1Password forums but had trouble. It is not user-friendly for the average person, except if you're an IT person or IT comes natural to some. 👎

    Excellent advice. Thank you.
    I would like to use 1Password Family plan. I want to use it on my Android phone and Windows corporate laptop. My wife will use it on iPhone and Mac. I can install 1Password app and browser extension on my phone, but I cannot install them on my corporate laptop due to my company restrictions. Thus I have the following questions:
    1) Will I be still able to use 1Password on my corporate laptop?
    2) Will I be able to automatically sync the corporate laptop with my phone and other devices (my wife's)?
    3) What will be the main drawbacks using 1Password on my corporate laptop without app and extension?

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Marcin, that an interesting problem. The first thing I would say is that it might be worth approaching your company’s IT department and asking them to allow you to install 1Password. That would obviously be the easiest.
      If that’s not an option, you can still use the web app version of 1Password (accessed via a browser), but it’s not nearly as convenient. That will stay in sync with your wife and other devices.
      So I’d say the main drawback is convenience. It should still work, though. Does that answer your question?

    • @marcinbujar1872
      @marcinbujar1872 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AllThingsSecured Yes, thank you very much indeed. Unfortunatelly, installing the app and/or extension on my corporate laptop is not an option (I have already received a no). However, I will try to use 1Password anyway. You have been very convincing. The features like shared voults or using a separate dedicated credit card for each entreprise seems amazing. However, the latter might not be possible, as you said in one of your videos, that Privacy is available only in USA, whily I live in Europe :(.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've actually changed my tune on that a bit. I currently use virtual cards through 1Password (th-cam.com/video/pJ-ZsfONByw/w-d-xo.html). Simply put, I start with limited trust in any company/software I use. As time goes on and I get to know them better, I'm more willing to trust them. That's the case with 1Password. I really like the company and the software now more than I did when I first published this review.

    You don’t say what version you are using is that 7 or 8. Both are considerably better than Apple Key Chain that I’ve used since 2008 Apple OSX Snow Leopard. Keychain on a iMac or MacBook had better options than what iCloud, iPhone or iPad Keychain. The only option being letters, numbers and dashes. 1Password did recently come out with a subscription which it seems made long time users a bit bitter. If you don’t need a router with the ability to customize every little setting like me check out the Eero 6 Pro Mesh router and get Secure Plus which cost a small yearly amount. The secure plus plan comes with a free subscription to 1Password along with 4 other features.

    Many thanks for ur great content! I have a question though, what’s the difference between this paid password manager and Apple free password saver?

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. There are a number of differences. First, Apple doesn't offer you a password generator to help you create stronger passwords. Keychain just stores the passwords you already have. It also doesn't give you any help regarding the health of your password profile.
      The biggest difference in my opinion, though, is that Apple's Keychain only works on Apple devices. A password manager like 1Password or Dashlane can work cross-platform so that you're not stuck only using the Apple devices.

      Apple keychain is not reliable! In addition to the comments already written about Apple keychain here, Apple keychain
      1…only works with some apps
      2...often has duplicate or triplicate (or even more than 3)entries on the keychain list for the same app/website, when you’re only need ONE password for each.
      Therefore I don’t use it much, except for those apps for which it does work. I record the rest of my passwords elsewhere.

    Thanks for the video ! Where I am a bit confused is : isn't the app suppose to create the passwords for you ? If so, I don't understand the "watchtower" utility and how can a password be weak or reused if generated by the app? Thx !

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1Password will create unique passwords when you create or update your account, but it will also offer to save passwords as you log into your existing accounts. So Watchtower checks those old passwords to make sure they aren’t compromised, weak, or reused.

    Hi, thanks for a great video. I have a question to which the answer might be obvious. Are team members able to actually see and therefore copy any passwords that is stored in company vaults. In other words, can team members share passwords with people that don't have access to the vault?

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Nicole, this is a great question. With the enterprise version of 1Password (which isn't shown in this review), you do have the ability to manage permissions with individual employees. In other words, you can control whether they can see/edit or just use the password. Likewise, for those who do have permissions, 1Password gives you an audit trail so you can see who changed what with any passwords and logins. Make sense?

    Am I correct in understanding that if I go to access my one password app from my sister's desktop, for instance, it will not work because the device key will not be there? I always have to use a device the 1Password is aware of belonging to me or a family member? And, how many devices can have this device key? Thanks for the kind words, Cheryl. If you're using 2-factor authentication for login (and I recommend you do), then you'll have to verify your account with 2FA on every device you log into.
