This Super Mario Bros. 3 rom hack allows 2 player co-op with a twist. The second player gets to be a nearly invincible cheep cheep. Don't get too far away from your new friend as doing so forces you to exit the level. Though the cheep cheep is immune to enemies, falling in pits will still take him out. Good luck!

Creator here again! Haha it's great that you guys are acting like bug finders :D It's nice to hear that people are requesting that you play it more! It's true that it's quite random which enemies hurt cheep cheep and which doesn't, I simply haven't implemented collision detection on all enemies yet, but it's coming I suppose :) I audibly yelled "NOOO" when you went for the spade game! I'll try to fix that, at least fix it so that you can't even try to enter that stage :) By the way, if you choose 1 player game, cheep cheep will always be player 2! But maybe it's nice for both of you to share the burden of transporting cheep cheep... Also, I'm kind of stuck at a crossroads regarding what cheep cheep should be able to do. At first when implementing collision detecting, I made it so that the cheep cheep always killed the enemies, but that kind of made it too easy (I think?), but as it is in this video might be too hard? But if I teach cheep cheep how to stomp enemies too, it might be easier (maybe all/more enemies should be stompable? Kind of like Mario in the Kuribo shoe). What would you guys want to see? By the way, the main reason why it's a cheep cheep and not Luigi is that only one set of sprites can be visible at a time for mario, it even changes when he jumps. However, if Mario always were small, it would work, but finishing the whole game as small Mario and Luigi is hard, maybe even impossible. A workaround would be that Mario and Luigi always look small, but change color or something when they can fly or throw fireballs, I don't know. Anyways, enough rambling! I love all these ideas! I think an always small Mario And Luigi would be a good challenge. There is an odd charm to controlling a cheep cheep that I do love. The cheep cheep getting the stomp ability might be cool. I dunno? Either way we are having a blast playing this. Keep up the good work, and thanks for watching :D
I think the Cheep-Cheep combo is cool and unique!
I got this one idea where when Mario gets a projectile powerup, the Cheep-Cheep can also throw those same projectiles. One issue though is that the game can only show 2 fireballs at once in the screen. Is that a limit to the game that got carried on to the future games, or could that be changed with some code editing?
@@blokbustr Yeah I've thought of that too, it would be easy to change the amount of fireballs on the screen, however I don't know how much lag that would add, especially important since lag is the absolute biggest stumbling block in making this hack. NES games were seriously optimized :) I think some things might have to be removed when adding more and more features, maybe decreasing the amount of enemies visible on the screen, reducing visual effects etc. I'll have to experiment a bunch!
@@lerikhkl Yeah when you see what the programmers in that time had to deal with you just can't help but have huge respect for there work. They had so many limitations yet they could make amazing games even with them. Most knew the ends and out of the console they worked on they had to know exactly how to not only program ,but how the system itself worked under the hood.
@@komodot9249 Yes assembly, but without the help from Captain Southbird's (creator of SMB3 Mix!) disassembly and extensive commentary of smb3 (github.com/captainsouthbird/smb3) this hack wouldn't have been possible, at least not within the same timeframe. His knowledge of the smb3 codebase is simply mindblowing, read more here if you're interested: sonicepoch.com/sm3mix/disassembly.html You could program it in C/C++ or whatever, but for most things that would just be too cumbersome, at least in my humble opinion.

Cheep Cheep should be able to interact with blocks and collect powerups. Mushrooms could make it into a big cheep cheep, fire flowers could turn it into a red cheep cheep that can shoot fireballs, etc.
