Nice build! Just bought an rpm 4l60e with a tci breakaway torque converter for my Tahoe. Gonna be fun when my heads, intake, and headers get delivered.
Long post, sorry, Thanks for this. I can use this as a guide if I decide to continue with my Tahoe. A couple of summers ago I purchased a Tahoe almost identical to yours, mine is lowered with 17” wheels. In great shape. As I understand it, the stock 4.8 had been swapped for a stock rebuilt lq4 with an LSA supercharger and ZL1 lid. The converter was “a cheap single disk that would get the job done” of unknown origin. The transmission is a stock rebuild of a 4l80E. the rear end is rebuilt with Posi and 4.11s. The exhaust is shorty headers through what looks like stock y pipe and cats to a single 3 inch out the back with a Magnaflow muffler. The guy who tuned it admitted to a driveway tune and he didn’t know what he was doing. I was working with a local guy on a street driven tune. My Tahoe wasn’t that quick, averaged 13.4 to 13.8 @ 101 to 99 mph. The exhaust sounded like it was pushing air through a straw, so my fist changes were going to be converter, headers and off-road y pipe. The torque converter had been set to lock at WOT, something the tuner and I agreed may damage the currently installed converter so we turned it off, which did slow the truck down some. He made the tune safe, fixed the shift points and the timing. There were problems I found after that we hadn’t noticed. After the last tuning session, I was almost home when I noticed I only had about 0 psi oil pressure (no pressure warning light) . The engine was making no noise or running any different, I pulled off and checked the oil level, it was a quart low, which seemed odd, but not enough to cause this issue, which did not resolve after filling it. While checking this out, I realized that I couldn’t get the oil cap off with the engine running because the entire system was under full engine vacuum. After tracing the tubes, I found all parts of the PCV system to be routed to vacuum sources (face palm). I corrected that, changed the oil and filter and the pressure sender. After fixing the PCV by routing one of the valve covers to an air cleaner, I got about 5 psi back, which gives me about 5 psi oil pressure when hot and 40 psi when cold, pressure never rises with RPM, sometimes it drops under load and rises under decel, leads me to believe its main bearings, but not sure, I did cut open the filter and found some brass shavings in there, not a lot, but they were there. Still don’t know what caused this on a motor that everyone tells me is very stout and should be able to handle this setup no problem unless the weird PCV routing caused some internal oil starvation issues. Moral of this story, I broke my own rule and bought someone else’s project and now I’m paying for it. I do drive it up my street occasionally, but I keep it parked most of the time until I can figure out if I’m going to keep it and do something with the Shortblock or sell it for whatever I can get and put that money into the Firebird. It’s a good starting point and I was excited to see what I could do with a pulley, tune, decent converter and LT headers plus exhaust, was counting on having to put a shortblock or replace all bearings already.
Awesome. I’m in Clayton NC and just about to embark on a 5.3/4L80/np241 transfer case swap into a 3rd generation 4Runner! Staying basic and NA at first and focusing on an OEM-like swap, but will eventually go LSA! Using your Tahoe as a role model as I collect parts!
Are you located in North Carolina because I have a 2004 Chevy suburban that I am trying to get around the same amount of horsepower that you have on your Tahoe and I’m trying to see exactly everything that I would need more or less to get it to where I wanted it at
I might be out of my league here, but the Z71 package GENERALLY comes with the G80 diff. That is a very interesting diff. It uses the difference in centrifugal force between the two axles to activate the mechanical LOCKING differential. If one wheel spins at more than 100rpn faster than the other, this big pawl flips out and locks the axles together. I liken it to how Park on the transmission uses a pawl to keep the driveshaft from turning. In other words, it is a true locking diff, no clutches involved at all. And that in itself may be the problem. Once it locks up, it stays that way until both tires are turning same RPM for several feet but it also needs a reduced load. From my experience it won’t release while accelerating. Be he ad it locked in the mud, then a slight turn onto pavement, then straight, but under throttle, trying to get a little sideways, and all it wanted to do was hop sideways, quite unnerving, and rough on and diff. I’d get that if it locks while doing a burnout, stays locked, and you launch, then the 1-2 up shift could destroy that whole mechanism if it’s not completely disengaged, or even still engaged. I don’t think it’s the constant pressure that hurts them. I think it’s the shock of engaging with tons of traction. Something has got to give. And with like 2500 lbs over the rear axles, nearly 600 ft lbs of torque, 3.73 gears, which are physically task, and big stupid tires, something is going to break. Take out the G80 and use an air locker. Or, spend a bunch of money.
