I pay $2500 and you pay the $150. You don’t know this, but your $150 guitar is actually a Silver Sky designed as a Squier. Are the you the clear winner?
Not if I play mine 3 hours each day and it inspires me to create music. And yours is set on the rack as you play your MIM Fender.
It goes against all logic…but we aren’t logical. I’d play the f out of that white SS.

the more distortion you use the less you'll hear the difference between guitars cuz they just lose their own sound. However what always gets overlooked in more expensive guitars is the 'playability'. I changed from a fender player series strat to a PRS silver sky and this thing plays so much easier, everything feels smoother and i can somehow bend at least a half step higher using the same strings

    • @TomButwin

@@cleftturnip7774 yeah totally, but you can actually get pretty close with a strat. If I use the neck pickup on my silver sky and roll the tone knob down almost completely it sound almost identical to a hollow body with humbuckers (such as a Gretsch, or an Ibanez or Gibson or something like those). But then you could ofc also say a strat with distortion can sound very different depending on what pickup you selected, they all sound completely different no matter how much distortion you use.

It sounds good, but it’s already falling to pieces! The tuners are cheap & don’t hold tune well, the g string (no pun 😂) buzzes, the pick guard doesn’t fit snug & there are gaps, it’s top heavy & unbalanced on a strap, the input connector has come loose & the back strap button has come loose also. My expensive Fender strat is solid as a rock. You get what you pay for!

It’s mostly how you dial in your tones. What usually makes a guitar cost more is the craftsmanship and sometimes parts. A real test is to take the Squire run it through dry in your preferred amp and all it’s dialed in settings and compare against the PRS. You’ll most likely hear the true difference. But even that may not be such a HUGE difference. There are guitarists here on TH-cam that when given a blind test cannot distinguish between their own high end and low end guitars….Most guitarists hear with their eyes when it comes to gear.

After building and playing guitars for 25 years, I realized that grounding, solder joints, shielding body cavities, precision of nut and saddle cuts, sharp bending of strings over the nut and saddles, intination, and neck pocket mating surface all play a huge part in sound quality. Dual fulcrums with a drop of oil on the pivot points..etc.. You can argue that’s the entire component list in the guitar ya… close. You can argue wood type and finish.. well… I’m not sold on that but I’ve seen where it seemed to make slight differences and where it made absolutely no differences consistently. A good instrument cord is a huge deal. Pickup wraps and pole pieces are tone sensitive giants. I’ve seen “Rohs” garbage pickups from china sound better than custom shop reissue and original vintage PAFs. So the only thing I can tell you about tone is this. If you want it clean and lots of sustain with great playability and staying in tune with the perfect tone to your ear… build yourself a nice star caster with all of the things listed above gone through and done right. In this process keep track of the time, tools, skills, efforts that it took to get this starcaster to this level of mastery. Then put a price on your guitar as it plays well above the out of the box 4k Fender or Gibson. Run down to your local shop and get someone to give you $300 for this tone monster demon slayer and I’ll kiss your ass. Guitars aren’t worth anything more than the smile they put on your face when you pluck a string unless you’re just admiring them as an idol piece and they make you feel good owning them. Anything made from wood with strings on it and an ability to intinate can be made to sound good by a person that understands the “formula” of a guitar. It’s the skill the labor and the tools that make it cost a lot. The flavor you get from 60cycle hummers or reverse polarity Seth lovers is all in the ear off the beholder and if your eyes only care to read the headstock you deserve to pay too much money for what some will change the world with in just a few hundred dollars and pair of reused strings.

Oh there's a huge difference. If you have an experienced ear. The PRS captures ALL the nuance.

I’ve got 2 classic vibe squiers, an all black tele and a mocha brown strat. Paid 700 CAD (513 USD) for each and I love them to death. Incredible guitars.

Playability makes the difference, not the sound (of course a bit of both especially without distortion but you get the point)

Just curious if this comparison was done on a modeler and if you tweaked the settings for each? Hard to believe they sounded exactly the same without at least some tweaking, but the point being they can be made to sound the same.
Totally agree with the playability and a lot of that is what feels comfortable to each individual. Some people hate the PRS necks. I find them to be very comfortable.

@@robn.7426 It was recorded using UA plugins (UA Fender ‘55 Tweed Deluxe (Default Clean & Albert Setting)
Compressor Plug-in: 1176LN)) and I literally unplugged the Squire and plugged the PRS in. No tweaking! If you watch the video linked above, the differences are much more apparent. The feel and build quality is unmatched and not even comparable. I LOVE the neck on the Silver Sky.

The PRS sounds more open with a wider frequency range and definitely more top end, the Squire doesn’t sound bad though. Just play what you can afford and have fun.

The labor to produce the Squier Strat was probably way cheaper, not that it should have been. It was probably made outside the USA. The Silver Sky was probably made in the USA where the costs to build that guitar costs more, as well as the materials.

I can hear the prs is more clearer and has more definition than the squier, even of a phone speaker. But to be fair the squier can get even closer with the same pickup and upgraded hardware i.e bridge, nut etc

Squier has really upped their game in the last 5 years. Its amazing what you can get for $200-300 now. Id say if youre a smart buyer most players wouldnt need to spend more than $400 for a great guitar.
