As y'all know, Halloween is the Wicked Makers holiday! We make lots of props, decorations, and awesome stuff this time of year and our new Skull Candle Holder props are the newest thing we've added to our Halloween decor.
These props are SUPER easy to make. Seriously. YOU CAN MAKE THESE! All you need is a plastic skull, some candles, and some heat to melt the candles. Don't have a heat gun? Use another candle! (It works, just takes a little longer.)
When you make these, send us some pictures!!

I like when diy channels show when things don't work it helps show that making mistakes is part of the process and that it is completely ok.
I did this tutorial and it turned out AMAZING!
Two things I did differently:
- I didn't want to do all that work just to have the candle burn down, but I couldn't use a flameless candle since that has batteries that need changing, so I used a real candle and hollowed out the top and slotted in an LED tea candle that could be controlled with a remote
- I used hot glue to adhere the candles to the skulls and then just dripped wax over the seams and it looked great. Worked like a champ and was super solid.
So i made these this year and they came out amazing. I painted my skulls with 5 different colors of acrylic paint instead of using wood stain. It gave me a really realistic look using varying shades of brown and a dark red. I used a watered down paint and sponge. Thank you two for all your great videos and creativity. Keep them coming.
Another idea if you don't have candles, is to use the toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls. Create a top circle for the faux candle out of card stock or left over toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls (just a little bigger then the circumference of the roll). Glue to the top side of the roll to cover. Then take a hot glue gun and form the "WAX" and "drips" and build it up and over the sides of the candles. After glue has dried, paint entire candle white with acrylic paint , all over the roll and "wax" parts (several coats of paint). Let dry then glue faux candles to skull and dripped glue over skull and let dry. For the wick just get jute twine paint that white with a little bit of black paint at the end to look like it was burning glue to middle of the top candle. OR instead of the top covered of candle... poke toothpicks or floral wire into a x shape inside of the toilet paper roll glue the wire sticking 1'4 inch on the outside of the rolls. Bend down and glue the wires with hot glue. Proceed as usual for the candle except covering the top part with card stock or extra toilet paper roll. At the end just ad a dollar tree flickering candle into the top of the "candle so it sits onto the "x" wires that are inside of the faux candle. Then you can just replace battery when needed or tea light. great for when you have little ones that knock stuff over or worried about fire if you leave them alone.
Or use pvc pipes to make the candles as well... same concept build up wax with hot glue and add paint variations then glue to skulls... might have to glue pvc end to skull with E6000 as its sturdier then hot glue and depending on the plastic hot glue will peal off of plastic when dried.
You can also, distress with just washes of acrylic paint and water and wiping with paper towels or a old cloth and dry brushing for the skull, if you or someone is sensitive to fumes from the oil stain like I am.
Sorry, just thought I would share, as this idea just popped into my head as I was watching this video.
Love it! Thanks for the suggestions. :)
Thanks Samantha. Will be following your suggestions for the acrylic paint.
yup... Samantha is right! You go girl!!!
but I would be safer to say, use "Tea Lights.". Safety first.
I think I'm going to try this, I want to make some of these for halloween this year but live with a dog who would definitely knock it over or something. thanks!
This looks great! I found some battery operated candle sticks at Dollar Tree and the shorter ones had a base. I glued the base to the skull, then melted was around the base to fill in and drip down the skull. Turned out pretty good and you don't have to worry about the real flame. :)
I'm so glad I found your channel and your tutorials!
Nice!!! 😄
Great tutorial. I used Minwax Gel Stain and it dried in like 15 min so that was nice.
Nice!! Great tip. Didn’t think to try a gel stain. 👊🏼🎃
Rub and buff would work well too. It's for accenting models
I love that you show some of the trial and error. Also woodstain! I am so excited to try that!
Easy way:
Wrap the candle with wax paper.
Temporarily hot glue it to the skull.
Mold around it with white hot glue & make the melted effect.
Remove the candle & then the wax paper.
Put the candle back in the mold.
This way you can replace the candle easier if it’s finished.
That drill took a lot of pressure off his mind..
I think i know where this is *head* ing
That was sick. YOU WIN!
Trepanning…oldest recorded surgical procedure 😉
I’ve used a die grinder to cut the eyes out then paint the inside black, looks like a real skull, good video, happy haunting!
Nice, good idea! 👊🏼💀
Real skulls do not go all the way in. The way the skulls are formed with bone behind the eyes is real.
I love to see this same technique with an electric candle? Cool idea guys! 👊👍
Its amazing how much the stain improves the look of those cheap plastic skulls.
Melt some wax in a pot then use that for the drippy effect instead of being quite so close to the heat gun
I am SO glad to have stumbled upon this channel. One of my faves, thank you!
Wow amazing results im always impress by your projects!
Melt the wax candle in a pot on the stove or microwave. Then slowly spoon on in a dripping motion onto the skeleton head & candle to decorate! Love how these look!
I just so want a bunch of these in my house year round! I thought creating a candle "holder" with hot glue to hold a candle and melting wax over it might work simply. I might fill or partially fill the skull with cement to make it less wobbly. There is something about a nicely weighted skull.
Y'all are reinventing the light bulb , you're calling it the dark bulb 😀😀😀😯😉😈😈😈😈💀💀💖💖
Your channel is officially my favorite DIY channel! 🎃👻☠️💀😈👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
😄😄😄😄
I love how you two show your failures as well as your successes! Keep up the amazing haunting work and here's to many more subscribers!
Thank you!!! 😄
A matt clear coat would keep the stain from rubbing off. I'd even recommend using an acrylic wash. For "safety first" I would recommend drilling out the candle and using an led tealight.
Nice, good idea!
I am on bed, sick. So, I can't do halloween makeup. But I am enjoying the time watching you create these amazing decorations. So cool!
Nice and simple - great work. Can't wait for more in the series.
Thanks very much! :)
Great video! It's always good to see other people's techniques.
Thanks very much. 👊🏼👊🏼
Great build. Have u thought about using “bleeding” candles. White on outside and red inside so it drips red “blood”. Super easy to make if you can’t find at store. Just melt some white (or whatever color u want outside to be) and then use a red candle and dip / coat it in the melted wax to desired thickness
Hey I just started my channel and have my first real video up. Anyway I could get some constructive criticism.
th-cam.com/video/Px3Z-rncWE8/w-d-xo.html
Checked out your video, the signs are nice!! Here are a few things that might help your video quality for next time:
- Turn your phone/camera sideways so the video isn't upright. You might have to position it back further to see everything but it's much more pleasing to watch that way.
- Try to either speed up or edit out the longer bits like the cleaning of the shop in the beginning. We get the idea after a few seconds and don't need to watch the whole thing.
- It was hard to hear what you were saying sometimes. Maybe try to get closer to the microphone or turn off the machines when you need to talk or explain something.
- Would be great to see the painting of the signs as well, since those look great.
Good luck man! It's a fun journey.
Thnx guys. I realized as soon as I started editing my phone was turned wrong. I hear ya on not hearing me. Also I’m still trying to talk the wife into being filmed while painting. Again thanks.
use RED pillar candles to melt around the skull, and use BLACK candles
Love these!!!
Thanks!!! 👊🏼😄
Saw how that skull fell over and rolled at 3:54? Now imagine that happening with a real lit candle on top (making the entire decoration top-heavy) that just set your house ablaze. Although this is very cool looking this looks extremely dangerous. I would not feel comfortable burning those even if I never left the room they're being used in.
The skull I used has a hole in the bottom for what appears to be a yard stake...maybe build some kind of platform with dowels to fit in to the holes in the bottom of the skull to keep it from rolling
Very good point, my skulls did the same thing if they’re a little too top-heavy I went to a used bookstore and found some old looking books and screwed the skull through the top of the book and then also dripped a little bit more wax on the book to make it look like it’s been sitting on that book for a long time, no more toppling over!
I’d be putting them on a non-burning surface, like a fireplace threshold or a concrete pedestal/‘altar’. Add a few rocks or part of a bag of dry rice inside the skull 💀 base. Hot glue the skulls to a base and each other so the balance out. Heck, set it in a platter of black sand and use red candles for a bloody effect. Use your noggin.
Exactly my thought. You can use an led candle with hot glue drippings and paint them over
They could have filled the skull with sand or concrete to make it a heavier base. Also, with the other candles, I would have opened the skull up, attached candle from the inside with a a screw/spike, and glued it back together.
Why just usage batteries candles and low temperature glue sticks, instead of real candles, but I did like the wood stain on the plastic skulls look, thanks for the ideas. I might do a pile of skull glue together cuttings some of skulls so they can be glued together with J B weld (6 minutes)with some candles on top of them, right.
omg I LOVE THIS!! Wish I had a house to decorate with these
A little hand torche like what a Chef uses to char things would be quite handy for your project. ;)
I love them! Great job guys.
Thanks, man! 🔥🔥
You did an outstanding job!!!
Another cracking idea well done to both of you for the video.
Stay Safe,
Barry (ENG)
Wonderful video
Awesome and simple project. I'm going to let the candles melt enough so I can put little LED tealights inside so they're fire-safe.
I used a torch melted some wax on a slick plastic surface, then stuff the gaps in with semi melted wax made the process faster.
I really love your videos guys!
Very cool😃
Great tutorial! I’m going to try this by placing the bottom of the candle in a wax melt warmer first to soften and shape the candle to top of the skull.
Nice!! That’s a great idea. Let us know if it works well. 👋🎃
Love the way they came out! Another way to make them look even more old and spooky is to alternate between the heat gun and a stick lighter when making the drip effect, this will add some soot into the wax creating varying degrees of aging and colour to the drips, then take a mixture of Mod-Podge and a bit of your choice of brown acrylic paint and give the candles a thin coat to give the look of aging and grime.

I wonder if drilling a hole in the top (and bottom to change batteries) then sliding in a LED candle then dripping wax around would have the same effect? Never have to replace the candle or worry about a fire?
Yep! 100%
Found it!! So cool guys
Thanks!! 🤘🏼😄
Beautiful job💀 Sand the skull 💀 just the size of candle then add E600 Glue.
Thanks! Great ideas
Wicked Makers So Love yours ✨💕✨
Great work!! 👌
awesome job guys!!
I love these videos lol
I did something similar but used a toilet paper tube that I made to look like a dripping candle and topped with an LED candle flame and just hot glued it all to the top of a foam skull and then drizzled hot glue all over everything to look like dripping wax. Then I painted and weathered the whole thing. Turned out really cool looking and you don't have to worry about open flame or hot wax
Crazy this "tears drop" effect in the eyes!!!
Yeah!!! 😄
@@WickedMakers just use a nail and you can easy replace the candle.
@@WickedMakers here a I idea, take a plate or bowl and use a long nail to contact the plate thouth fake skull to the candle
U should try dripping red wax on top of the white candle to look like dripping blood
Awesome idea! 😄
Wicked Makers great job on ur tutorial. They look great! Well done. Will definitely try this one. And I’m a subscriber now so can’t wait to c more of ur ideas and videos
Thanks, made this tonight.
👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼💀
That is awesome!
Set outside to dry - it doesn't matter if they get all dusty or buggy!!! 💀
These look great!!
I love the way you make this. Very creative and super good idea for Halloween decoration 👍👍
Those were awesome👍
Thanks! :)
You know what would have worked a lot better and looked more realistic. Like with the tapered candle. Drill a hole in the head for ALL the skulls. get some spray foam to fill the cavity. Slide the candle down inside because that's what they seem to look like in all the pictures I have come across. and then melt candle wax to fill and voids from over-cutting the hole. This helps lower the center of gravity and stabilize the skull more.
You 2 are AWESOME! I love your ideas. Gonna haunt the house up next year with your ideas. Built your Spooky Pumpkin Scarecrow using my new circular saw I got from Santa last year. Thanks guys!! ....& gal....well... you know who you are.
you can also use dark shoe polish
Wow these are super cool and kinda easy to make. Thanks for the tip guys 👍👍👍💚❤💚❤💚
Thanks Chris! 🤘🏼🎃
@@WickedMakers my Fiance loves the Skull Candles because we have already got a few of the Skulls in Storage ready for Halloween. This just makes them look so good. Thanks 🤡👻🧟♂️🎃
Faux candle-battery operated hot glue for dipped wax, paint it white or better red w red or black candle. I would use chalk paint and antique wax stain. Cool, quick, spooky and safer options ❣︎ just a few suggestions
Nice!!! 😄
Cool idea. I did something like this about a year ago and used a paddle drill bit almost the same size as the candle, going through the skull. I used a battery operated candle and a hot glue gun to create the drips.
I am really enjoying your channel!🧡💚💜🕷🦇
Pardon the question, but did a glue gun not work for affixing the candles? Thanks for the vid btw, just discovered your channel and looking forward to perusing some more crafts!
these.....are.....AWESOME!!!
Thank you! 👊🏼🎃
Love it
Cut a round circle to drop the candle in the hole on the top of the skull. How do you cut a circle out criss-crossed some shoestring but let it droop inside the hole and screw the ends on the top of the skull. This way when you drop the candle in the hole the shoelace will keep from dropping the candle all the way down
Awesome, love this idea!
So spooky.
That is so cool! I have a skull so I will get working on it first thing tomorrow. 😊🎃 Thank's guy's and have a great Halloween!🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Very cool! They look amazing!
Thanks!! :)
I see them rolling over on the side and catching something on fire . I think I would use battery operated candles from the Dollar Tree
Battery powered candles are a great option.
I would probably drill holes for all of them, fill the skulls with rocks or sand for stability, and then the candles can be easily replaced.
Way cool guys! Halloween time!
Yeeeees! Thanks!
The way I get candles to stick to surfaces is by heating the base of the candle. Maybe use the heat gun on the base of the candle and then press it firmly to the surface
Definitely adding this one to my list! 💀♥️
Awesome!!! 😄
You could shape the bottom of the candle to fit the skull 😈😈😈😈😉😀😀😁
Very cool 💀💀💀
Thanks! 😄
Use watered down acrylic paint..it will dry and won't rub off over time
5 minute epoxy worked great for me!
Drill through the top add led candle..melt hot glue down sides of candle. Change batteries in candle when necessary 🇨🇦
USE COFFE TO STAIN A A RED CANDLE FOR BETTER EFFECT
New subscriber just love y’all and love your work 🎃👻👹💀 Happy halloween 2019
Happy Halloween! 👋🎃 Thanks 😄😄😄
WOoHOo love this diy you both are fab hugs 🙏🏽🥰
I love this idea sooooo cool
😄😄😄😄
Skulls & fire! 🖤🖤🖤
🔥🔥🔥🔥💀💀💀💀
I'll be adding this to my "honey do list." Awesome build guys!
Awesome, thanks!
Piece of pvc and hot glue gun. Glue the pipe like a candle holder. Let the glue gun melt down the outside of the pvc to look like wax. Then melt wax from another candle to cover hot melt glue and fill in gap around the decorative candle.
Great job guys! Just discovered your channel!
Thanks! Glad you found us. 😀
Are you not worried that the wood varnish will be flammable?
Not once it’s cured. 😀
With the first skull you could have put metal pins into the skull and heated them up and then stuck the candle on top of the pins
Jamie I love the Wiccan/Pagan like shirt u had on while staining the skulls. Where did u get it? I would love to have one (even though, for me, the pentagram is upside down)
It’s not available anymore but we’re working with the designer of that shirt to make some new ones!
Another fantastic idea! Super easy but super effective! 🤪 I prefer using paints, but these look great. Thanks for the experimentation. Would hot glue work too?
Thanks! Yeah hot glue would have worked great. 🤪
Pretty cool, I'll have to give that a try and I'm definitely going to sub to y'alls channel
Thanks and welcome! 🤘🏼😄
@@WickedMakers your welcome
And weight the skulls with sand first so they aren't top heavy would be smart also.
Instead of using oil based wood stain, just spray paint it with a matte white, then wipe on some leftover coffee. Same effect, less cost, dries in 10 minutes tops.
Coffee also works for staining real skulls if you happen to live close to a cemetery.
This guys out here staining real skulls.💀💀💀😄
@@WickedMakers I plead the 5th!
Hot glue it underneath then melt wax around the cracks to hide it
So cool
😄😄😄
Awesome!
🤘🏼🎃
I have cut a hole for the candle but use fake candle made of real wax on the outside with the flame that flickers ... then use hot glue to look like the dripping and paint to match the wax. Safety first.
