    As y'all know, Halloween is the Wicked Makers holiday! We make lots of props, decorations, and awesome stuff this time of year and our new Skull Candle Holder props are the newest thing we've added to our Halloween decor.
    These props are SUPER easy to make. Seriously. YOU CAN MAKE THESE! All you need is a plastic skull, some candles, and some heat to melt the candles. Don't have a heat gun? Use another candle! (It works, just takes a little longer.)
    When you make these, send us some pictures!!

    I like when diy channels show when things don't work it helps show that making mistakes is part of the process and that it is completely ok.

    Another idea if you don't have candles, is to use the toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls. Create a top circle for the faux candle out of card stock or left over toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls (just a little bigger then the circumference of the roll). Glue to the top side of the roll to cover. Then take a hot glue gun and form the "WAX" and "drips" and build it up and over the sides of the candles. After glue has dried, paint entire candle white with acrylic paint , all over the roll and "wax" parts (several coats of paint). Let dry then glue faux candles to skull and dripped glue over skull and let dry. For the wick just get jute twine paint that white with a little bit of black paint at the end to look like it was burning glue to middle of the top candle. OR instead of the top covered of candle... poke toothpicks or floral wire into a x shape inside of the toilet paper roll glue the wire sticking 1'4 inch on the outside of the rolls. Bend down and glue the wires with hot glue. Proceed as usual for the candle except covering the top part with card stock or extra toilet paper roll. At the end just ad a dollar tree flickering candle into the top of the "candle so it sits onto the "x" wires that are inside of the faux candle. Then you can just replace battery when needed or tea light. great for when you have little ones that knock stuff over or worried about fire if you leave them alone.
    Or use pvc pipes to make the candles as well... same concept build up wax with hot glue and add paint variations then glue to skulls... might have to glue pvc end to skull with E6000 as its sturdier then hot glue and depending on the plastic hot glue will peal off of plastic when dried.
    You can also, distress with just washes of acrylic paint and water and wiping with paper towels or a old cloth and dry brushing for the skull, if you or someone is sensitive to fumes from the oil stain like I am.
    Sorry, just thought I would share, as this idea just popped into my head as I was watching this video.

    Easy way:
    Wrap the candle with wax paper.
    Temporarily hot glue it to the skull.
    Mold around it with white hot glue & make the melted effect.
    Remove the candle & then the wax paper.
    Put the candle back in the mold.
    This way you can replace the candle easier if it’s finished.

    So i made these this year and they came out amazing. I painted my skulls with 5 different colors of acrylic paint instead of using wood stain. It gave me a really realistic look using varying shades of brown and a dark red. I used a watered down paint and sponge. Thank you two for all your great videos and creativity. Keep them coming.

    I did this tutorial and it turned out AMAZING!
    Two things I did differently:
    - I didn't want to do all that work just to have the candle burn down, but I couldn't use a flameless candle since that has batteries that need changing, so I used a real candle and hollowed out the top and slotted in an LED tea candle that could be controlled with a remote
    - I used hot glue to adhere the candles to the skulls and then just dripped wax over the seams and it looked great. Worked like a champ and was super solid.

  • @ginahecht7915

    This looks great! I found some battery operated candle sticks at Dollar Tree and the shorter ones had a base. I glued the base to the skull, then melted was around the base to fill in and drip down the skull. Turned out pretty good and you don't have to worry about the real flame. :)
    I'm so glad I found your channel and your tutorials!

    Saw how that skull fell over and rolled at 3:54? Now imagine that happening with a real lit candle on top (making the entire decoration top-heavy) that just set your house ablaze. Although this is very cool looking this looks extremely dangerous. I would not feel comfortable burning those even if I never left the room they're being used in.

    • @brantbowling7385
      @brantbowling7385 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The skull I used has a hole in the bottom for what appears to be a yard stake...maybe build some kind of platform with dowels to fit in to the holes in the bottom of the skull to keep it from rolling

    • @dougswain672
      @dougswain672 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Very good point, my skulls did the same thing if they’re a little too top-heavy I went to a used bookstore and found some old looking books and screwed the skull through the top of the book and then also dripped a little bit more wax on the book to make it look like it’s been sitting on that book for a long time, no more toppling over!

    • @ldyjewell
      @ldyjewell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I’d be putting them on a non-burning surface, like a fireplace threshold or a concrete pedestal/‘altar’. Add a few rocks or part of a bag of dry rice inside the skull 💀 base. Hot glue the skulls to a base and each other so the balance out. Heck, set it in a platter of black sand and use red candles for a bloody effect. Use your noggin.

    • @stephanienunez4462
      @stephanienunez4462 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly my thought. You can use an led candle with hot glue drippings and paint them over

    • @VikingVet
      @VikingVet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They could have filled the skull with sand or concrete to make it a heavier base. Also, with the other candles, I would have opened the skull up, attached candle from the inside with a a screw/spike, and glued it back together.

  • @colemyst
    @colemyst 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I just so want a bunch of these in my house year round! I thought creating a candle "holder" with hot glue to hold a candle and melting wax over it might work simply. I might fill or partially fill the skull with cement to make it less wobbly. There is something about a nicely weighted skull.

  • @AtariTiger
    @AtariTiger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    A matt clear coat would keep the stain from rubbing off. I'd even recommend using an acrylic wash. For "safety first" I would recommend drilling out the candle and using an led tealight.

    Piece of pvc and hot glue gun. Glue the pipe like a candle holder. Let the glue gun melt down the outside of the pvc to look like wax. Then melt wax from another candle to cover hot melt glue and fill in gap around the decorative candle.

    Melt the wax candle in a pot on the stove or microwave. Then slowly spoon on in a dripping motion onto the skeleton head & candle to decorate! Love how these look!

  • @KruellNationGaming
    @KruellNationGaming 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You know what would have worked a lot better and looked more realistic. Like with the tapered candle. Drill a hole in the head for ALL the skulls. get some spray foam to fill the cavity. Slide the candle down inside because that's what they seem to look like in all the pictures I have come across. and then melt candle wax to fill and voids from over-cutting the hole. This helps lower the center of gravity and stabilize the skull more.

  • @Vampkiki
    @Vampkiki 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    And weight the skulls with sand first so they aren't top heavy would be smart also.

  • @beardedgremlin8117

    Great build. Have u thought about using “bleeding” candles. White on outside and red inside so it drips red “blood”. Super easy to make if you can’t find at store. Just melt some white (or whatever color u want outside to be) and then use a red candle and dip / coat it in the melted wax to desired thickness

      Checked out your video, the signs are nice!! Here are a few things that might help your video quality for next time:
      - Turn your phone/camera sideways so the video isn't upright. You might have to position it back further to see everything but it's much more pleasing to watch that way.
      - Try to either speed up or edit out the longer bits like the cleaning of the shop in the beginning. We get the idea after a few seconds and don't need to watch the whole thing.
      - It was hard to hear what you were saying sometimes. Maybe try to get closer to the microphone or turn off the machines when you need to talk or explain something.
      - Would be great to see the painting of the signs as well, since those look great.
      Good luck man! It's a fun journey.

    Love the way they came out! Another way to make them look even more old and spooky is to alternate between the heat gun and a stick lighter when making the drip effect, this will add some soot into the wax creating varying degrees of aging and colour to the drips, then take a mixture of Mod-Podge and a bit of your choice of brown acrylic paint and give the candles a thin coat to give the look of aging and grime.

    I have cut a hole for the candle but use fake candle made of real wax on the outside with the flame that flickers ... then use hot glue to look like the dripping and paint to match the wax. Safety first.

    Those look awesome. But I never use real candles. Fire is not my friend. If you get me

    Are you not worried that the wood varnish will be flammable?

    The way I get candles to stick to surfaces is by heating the base of the candle. Maybe use the heat gun on the base of the candle and then press it firmly to the surface

    There are a LOT of different ways to go about this and alternatives to various steps you guys did and I'm gonna list a few affordable and easy options for people here who might not have some of this stuff and wanna do it as a cheap fun halloween craft:
    1) Instead of actual wood stain: Just use acrylic paint! Water it down a little bit, maybe mix in some mod podge or other water based brushable sealant. Look up dry brushing techniques for some extra flair and to bring out the texture in the sculpting.
    2) Other people have said this, but if you're attaching a FULL real wax candle to this thing the easiest way to do that is to basically spike it on there with a nail or a screw or something
    2.5) Some options instead of doing an entire real candle, or even a real candle at all:
    - You could buy a big fat LED candle and just use hotglue or real wax(melted in a pan, poured over top, and then use a hair dryer to get it to go farther, or like in the video use a real candle stick candle and hold it sideways to drip over the fake candle) to meld it visually, you'll have to figure out a way to access the batteries and the ON/OFF switch though.
    -Make a fake candle with a little spot at the top that you can place a little tealight in, whether real or fake is up to you, then it's easily replaceable and reusable! There's a lot of ways to go about this but in general I'd recommend some kind of cardboard tube from your recycling bin to make it easier on you. You could cover it in air dry clay, or just more hot glue, then paint it a creamy off-white. Make sure to make a little seat at the top to hold the tea light. VERY IMPORTANT: If you're going to use a real tea light in this fake candle you've made, please make sure that the stuff you're using around and underneath where the candle sits is heat safe. I recommend corkboard or something to insulate it, which i suppose you could also try to paint? Plastic will melt, metal will transfer heat, so just be careful and be smart!
    3) if you have a candle stick candle like the one in the video that has a base on it but you don't have a big scoop drill thing, you don't need to attach it with super glue and cut the bottom off and spoon it or whatever, just grab an exacto knife (if there are children reading this, please get supervision, i cut myself on accident wayyyyy too much as a kid) or possibly even a pair of scissors opened all the way??(this is more dangerous than the exacto knife tbh) and carve out a hole to fit the candle base.
    This all might be much easier with a styrofoam skull tbh
    4) someone else in the comments was concerned about the skull falling over like it did in the video when using a real flame. This IS a genuine concern! If you're going to use real fire with this, I recommend making some kind of base for the skull. How you do that is up to you, but if it was me I'd probably either use a bunch of hotglue disguised as "wax drips" to make a base for it(putting it ontop of wax paper while making a sort of puddle of wax around it) or glue some felt feet to the bottom of it and hide it with little knickknacks also glued to the sides of it. Maybe some fake bones or something? I dunno, up to you, get creative!
    The most important thing is try and get the center of gravity for it as low as possible, because that big candle is pretty darn heavy. You want to make it as un-knock-over-able as possible. Literally attempt to knock it over at various stages of building the base to make sure it's safe. I know you might go "it won't look as cool" but, 1. if you do it right it'll look cooler and 2. looking slightly less cool is better than your house burning down :)
    Stay safe out there guys and have a Happy Halloween!

    Why just usage batteries candles and low temperature glue sticks, instead of real candles, but I did like the wood stain on the plastic skulls look, thanks for the ideas. I might do a pile of skull glue together cuttings some of skulls so they can be glued together with J B weld (6 minutes)with some candles on top of them, right.
