      Agreed, the '70s and '80s episodes were superbly well written and acted. Today's show doesn't deserve to go out under the same name, it isn't even a pale imitation of The Street's glory years!

    I watch Classic Corie so often i almost know the script word for word - I put it on when i cant be bothered having to follow the plot of a film or play or listen to anything elso too heavy - Its almost switching on and having old friends chatting away while your having your dinner or just chilling out - very relaxing and stress relieving

    • @glamdolly30

      Snap! It's so comforting watching these classic episodes, isn't it? Instant relaxation and calm, like inviting lovely, warm friends round you've known for years. Nothing else can quite do that for me, Corrie is magic.
      These days I'm far more inclined to watch this on YT than put the telly on and try a new drama - they are all so formulaic, and everything is about the police/detectives and depressing crimes!

    My dad was a mechanic. He always said the job was far harder than people had any idea about. He used to say you'd spend half of the day on your back under a car with oli dripping all over your face. In winter you'd freeze to death and have the skin ripped of your hands after picking up frozen spanners - working in ice cold garages when the snow was coming down. No one ever wanted to shake your hands because no matter how you scrubbed up you always had black finger nails. Your knuckles would always be raw from catching them on parts of the engine from either tightening bolts up all the time or trying to remove parts from inside the engine. Having a job that involves s all that day day after day you'd think whining Gail wouldn't mind Brian have a night here and there to play squash!

    Actor Bernard Youens who played Stan was out of the show at this point in hospital (admitted in April 1984), and sadly would never return home, or to Coronation Street.
    Stan's final appearance on screen was on March 7th 1984. The actor rapidly deteriorated during his almost 4 months in hospital, and died there in his sleep from a heart attack at 69 on 27th August.
    A recording of Stan calling "Hilda!" (they must have had plenty to choose from) was played in, to indicate he was upstairs, ill in bed @1:17:13 Or did you add that. ProfessionalGun???
    Stan's death was revealed in a phone call to Hilda at Alf's corner shop on 21st November 1984. In 1985, actress Jean Alexander won a prestigious Royal Television Society Award for her performance in scenes dealing with Hilda's bereavement.

      I can't bear it, 83 & 84 really are sad years for the street, and a line in the sand of old & new Corrie. I know many of the old cast are still around, but when Hilda leaves in a few years, that's really it for me, Bette's still there, but there's too many new people for me. Time moves on, I know, but nothing touches the golden old days on the cobbles.

    1:03:48 I forgot Beverley Callard had this bit-part role (June Dewhurst) in Corrie, before she was cast as Liz McDonald in 1989.
    It's amazing the transformation cosmetic surgery later had on her face - as this profile shot of her old nose reveals. I think nose jobs are probably the single most effective surgery for improving someone's looks. Bev was so much prettier with her new nose, it softened her whole look.
    By the late 1990s with the Corrie cash rolling in, Bev had worked hard to change Liz from her original image as a downtrodden mum-of-two, to the Street's glamour puss, with umpteen different cosmetic surgery procedures, and a strict diet and exercise regime.
    Funnily enough, Pat Phoenix had done similar 30 years previously - when cast as Elsie Tanner for Corrie's 1960 launch, she was a matronly size 14-16. But once she got established on the show Pat secretly slimmed down, and had two face lifts - one in the late sixties, and a second in the late 'seventies (she made no secret of the surgery among her fellow cast members - it's the reason she is seen returning home, stepping out of a taxi in huge sunglasses to hide the post-surgery bruising, in an episode from December 1979!) The effort she put in was a triumph, revealing her true beauty, and making her the Street's sex siren.
    Like Beverley Callard, Pat Phoenix was a woman who enjoyed her fame, and seized the opportunity it gave her to be uber-glamorous. Good on 'em I say!

    Very interesting to see how 'Coronation Street' handled the death of Albert Tatlock/actor Jack Howarth, who at this time, along with William Roache as Ken Barlow, was the last remaining original cast member.
    As these episodes show all too plainly - they didn't handle his death at all! It got only the briefest, most perfunctory mention, with his equally cantankerous daughter Beattie (Gabrielle Daye in one of her fleeting, regular visits since 1961), arriving to break the news (@1:17:33).
    Deirdre's emotional speech is the only tribute of any substance made to him - and it doesn't ring true at all. Nor does Ken's description of Uncle Albert as: "A jaunty little man who enjoyed life to the full". It's totally bogus!
    In fact the character was a resolutely miserable, self-pitying, pessimistic hater of humanity, entirely self-serving, and always cadging freebies (especially drinks in the Rovers), from people who could ill afford them. He's the kind of miser who in real life, no one would give the time of day - and he certainly wouldn't be mourned - or missed!
    According to legend, there was a lot of actor Jack Howarth in Albert Tatlock. Monday to Friday he lived like a king with his wife Betty in a grand suite at the Midland Hotel, next door to Granada Studios. The couple had a home in North Wales, and also kept a flat in London. It's said Jack bought Betty so much valuable fine jewellery, she kept it in a secret safe.
    Yet the actor's mean habits were legendary. The late Neville Buswell who played Ray Langton recalled that during afternoon rehearsals at Granada, at 4pm on the dot a lady wheeled in a trolley laden with tea, coffee and a generous assortment of sandwiches and freshly baked cakes for the cast. Without fail Jack was the first up for the feast - and specifically, his favourite eccles cakes - and he grabbed every last one from the plate for him and his wife to enjoy back at their hotel, stuffing them into every pocket of his suit. It was exactly the same performance, every time the trolley appeared.
    Unsurprisingly this habit got noticed, and it caused some amusement - and irritation - among his fellow actors. One day, Neville decided to pull a Ray Langton type trick, and teach Jack a lesson. He told others about his plan, to ensure he had an audience. The tea lady walked in at her usual time, and sure enough Jack jumped up, got to the trolley first, and did his eccles cakes grab. Neville watched from across the room, quietly biding his time till he was sure he'd allowed sufficient time for Jack to take every last eccles cake, and secrete it in every last jacket pocket.
    Then he bounded over to the actor like a long lost son, cried "Great to see ya Jack me old mate, how are you doing?" and grabbed him in an almighty, (eccles cake) crushing, bear hug! To Jack's dismay, he made sure to destroy every raisin-filled pastry hidden about his person!
    This may explain why Coronation Street Producers didn't exactly go to town on the tributes, when he died off screen and on. It was a very far-fetched exit storyline. Aside from the fact Albert and his only child Beattie didn't get on, so he was hardly likely to have had such an extended stay with her, the script had made it clear many times he was too frail for such a visit.
    It also beggared belief that Beattie, who never lifted a finger for her father and left it all to Ken and Deirdre (who were not even blood relatives!) would be so keen to take charge of his funeral arrangements. In real life she'd have sent him back to 'Coronation Street' for embalming before he was even cold - and ensured Ken and Deirdre paid for the undertaker and the funeral tea! Yet we're expected to believe she's suddenly possessive over her old man and desperate to organise his funeral - and it's a total mystery who these people were she planned to invite who lived locally to her. The miserable old bugger had hardly any pals in 'Coronation Street'!
    It's clear Corrie bosses decided viewers had no appetite for a sentimental, Uncle Albert funeral episode. I guess we should be grateful they didn't stretch credibility to breaking point, with dewy-eyed neighbours sobbing into their hankies, and swapping fond stories of the 'jaunty little man who lived life to the full'!

    • @greggildersleeve3484
      @greggildersleeve3484 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've only recently started watching Corrie, but I've seen enough to think that Dierdre's and Ken's descriptions of Albert ring true for them. Ken was shown to have a close relationship with his neighbor, Albert, as far back as the first episode, and Ken was certainly a lot closer to him than Beattie was. I can also believe that Beattie took charge of the funeral. When a loved one dies, people often try to make amends for past wrongs. That's often why you see such elaborate obituaries and memorials in newspapers. It also seems in keeping with Beattie's character that she would try to take charge of this final act for her father--for purely selfish reasons. Whether Albert had close friends is an open question, though many of the people he hung out with, such as Len, Ena, and Minnie, had passed on or left. Billy Walker attended the funeral and even referred to Albert as "Uncle Albert," though I'm not clear on their relationship. I appreciate your perspective, though, and the insights into Jack Howarth's personality.

    So this year they killed off Bill Webster on the Street. Debbie and Kevin went to Germany to lay him to rest. However, never acknowledged is the actor Peter Armitage died about 5 years ago. I always liked the character, he was lovable Bill.

    • @glamdolly30
      @glamdolly30 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't know Peter Armitage died, shame. I read that producer Bill Podmore brought him in hoping he'd be the new Len Fairclough type character, after Peter Adamson left in disgrace for selling stories on the cast to a tabloid.
      Apparently Podmore signed up Peter Armitage, making it clear he had big plans for his character Bill Webster, and asking for his word that he'd be happy to stay in the show for a few years. He gladly agreed, and signed on the dotted line.
      But as we know, he didn't stay for long - he got itchy feet and left, with the result that the actress who played his daughter got written out. His TV son Kevin was lucky to get a reprieve (undeserved in my view), and become Hilda's lodger.
      Of course Bill Webster returned many years later, and was involved in a Christmas Day love triangle with Maureen Holdsworth (his wife, I think?) and Audrey Roberts - not bad for an old boy!

    I would of preferred the Gordon Lewis character to be the Manager of the Rovers, I hope they install someone similar to him in the New Corrie episodes. Why I say this, is cos Lewis had a lot of comedic potential, but the reason the pub went to Bet, was due to Goodyear being the 'Pet of Podmore'. This is the actual story of Corrie insiders at the time.
    Corrie nowadays needs charasmatic characters, and I hope the owner of the Rovers is changed to a Lewis type. Jenny is Okish, but she is not memorable.
