Cats don’t understand the word punishment but they understand when they get in trouble and know when to hide because they did the same pattern behavior. They know.

I have two kittens. They are siblings (one male, one female) and got them at two months old. They are currently eight months old. I also have a 10-year-old English bulldog who continues to mark my furniture in the same spot. Is it possible that my male kitten developed a learned behavior to mark/go outside of his litter box because he smells the scent of urine from another male animal?

I have always found that my cats prefer bigger boxes! Company's should make them larger!! I make my own out of those big plastic storage boxes, just cut out a big enough opening on one end about 4" from the bottom and you can fill them with 2-3" of litter. I leave the top off because I find that most cats do not like an enclosed box. They just love being able to turn around and scratch in a large space, and with the high sides the litter doesn't go all over the place either!! 😸

I found out my cat (he's a bigger neutered tomcat, not fat, just lengthy and tall) won't fit or go in a covered litter box. (Story below!)
Also, being a rescue from outside, I think he may have been trapped or cornered at one time, and hated the cover on his box. Once I found the right sized box with no lid, I haven't had any problems since (besides accidentally buying some litter that had fragrance in it, that was a whole other battle! He prefers fragrance free apparently!)
Here's the funny litter box story from my current rescue cat; I bought a "normal" sized box for him, and, as a curious cat owner, decided to see how he fit in the box when he was in it (I was clueless at this point). He had his hindquarters in the box, and his front feet outside the box! He looked up at me like "Do you see a problem here?" I got a bigger box. Nope, same issue and disappointed face! I finally got the biggest box (I think it's called jumbo) and he finally fit in it. He also loves to "Dig to China" as I like to put it. They need the right depth of litter in there to cover up their leavings, and mine loves around 4 inches of litter (The bigger box can hold more, and it makes it easier for him to get in and out since the sides are higher than a normal sized box)
He's now a geriatric cat (around 17 or so) and has anal gland issues, so he will run away from his box and complete his doings somewhere else. Once I bring him to the vet, get his glands expressed and sometimes antibiotics if they are infected, then it's back to being in the box. I never get mad or yell at him, I figure it is my responsibility to make sure he's doing alright. He has a standing vet visit once a month now to keep him "going" in the box 😉👍
I never thought about getting a new litter box to alleviate the anxiety situation, that's a really good idea! I like replacing the box yearly at most, they get worn out from all the scooping and washing. (Or if your cat still has it's claws and scratches the bottom a lot.) My cat was front declawed when I found him outside, not much for defense or protection! 🙀 I probably never thought about it since I replace the box with a different colored one, and that seems to make it a non-issue for him?
Thank you so much for this video as always! 😸🐾🐾 I've been telling my friends about your channel, I hope it's helping 😁👍

I'm so happy to hear when cat parents are so observant! From what I have learned, the majority of the time, if an owner has an issue with a cat, it's because the cat is trying to tell them something is wrong. But the owner doesn't pick up the clues. You clearly do, and I'm sure your cats love you for it. You're doing a great job, friend! 2 paws up! 🐾😺

We cant find the problem. He has done this 5 years on and off. Vet checked 15 times. More litter boxs. Different types of litter and boxs. Prozac. 7 thousand dollars of ruined wood flooring and carpets. 500.00 ruined bedroom bathroom closet doors soaked with piss.

Thank you, I hope I find the solution to my cats habit to go on her box and still manages to get shit all over the house at random moments. Usualy its next to the box but this morning in the livingroom... Sometimes its the box not being clean enough (even if I do twice a day), sometimes I think its stress and that she punishes me for I dont know what as she is always begging for attention and I am clueless to what because she has her food, she has her cuddles, I play with her all the time, she just scratches me gently if Im not paying attention haha. Might be why previous owners abandoned her (and wanted to have her put to sleep). I wont, because she is all else a sweetheart, though the pooping frustrates me, it goes 90% in her box, the rest ends up outside of it.

I've been having trouble with one of my cats doing both #1 and #2 on the table, near the table and on the kitchen floor.
The litter box is in the kitchen. But, when my father became ill she began going outside the litter box.
I've had people tell me maybe that's the issue... she knows something was wrong in our daily routine.
I was gone a lot during that time visiting my father in the hospital, the nursing home and now he's no longer with us the house is too quiet.
IDK if the change in my father's health is the direct cause of her refusing to use the litter box...

Thank you for the litter box advice. I have 2 cats both under 8 months old. Mo, the boy cat has never had any issues with the litter boxes (I have 3 boxes) Maggie, however will urinate in the boxes, but most of the time poops Outside the boxes. When she does poop in n the boxes she doesn't cover it up.Fortunately, Mo will cover it up?!. I scoop often during the day & usually clean the boxes once every 1 to 2 weeks. Any suggestions for Maggie?! I will not give her away but scrubing carpets Is really frustrating.

There is a huge taboo about rehoming your cat, however if you have tried for months and months and months with all the potential solutions to elimination behaviors as outlined in numbers 1-6 in this video, and the only possible remaining cause of aversion is number 7 (anxiety), then rehoming might actually be the kindest option for the cat, as they might simply find a different household suits them better. As long as you are kind to the cat, and find a suitable new home, and are honest with the new owners, there really isn't anything to feel ashamed of. You tried your best and did all you could for the cat

I adopted (and fell madly in love with!) two sibling ginger cats in April. I quickly bonded with them and they with me. They were the most loving cats ever! The best! Later, I discovered they were peeing outside the litter box as well as using the litter box. They both (I witnessed them both at separate times) peed all over our upstairs plush carpeting in over 30 places. I found with a blacklight flashlight all the spots to treat. I took them to the vet and it was determined that they both had lots of crystals and were diagnosed with FIC. Incurable the vet said. They were put on a very expensive prescription food diet and medication to help with inflammation and pain. They continued to pee on the carpeting as well as the litter box. I tried CBD for cats, special this, special that, nothing worked. I was heartbroken and took them back to the shelter (a no kill shelter) to rehome them. I still miss my beautiful perfect babies and still cry about it to this day. I was so shattered over this experience and decided that I'm not going to adopt again even though I would love to. I still cannot get the smell out of the carpet and we're probably going to have to eventually pull up the carpet and padding and replace it or put down a different flooring altogether. It really was a heart wrenching decision to give them up and I didn't do it lightly.

@@lisahaaseckle Thank you for sharing your story, and I'm so so sorry that you had to experience that. It sounds like you did a lot for both cats, you loved them and took them to the vet, who identified what was wrong and what treatment was needed. So that was a big step forward for them, for someone to actually know what was wrong. So now they will hopefully have a comfortable life in the shelter or perhaps even find a home with someone experienced with their medical condition who has a lot of resources (space, time, money). Don't beat yourself up, no one in your position could have done more! Take care and I hope you begin to feel better soon.

I think my cat has 2 issues. He's marking around doors and windows. There's no cats outside but the cat we have inside my daughter's cat. That is with us until the fall. He beats up on unmercifully, so that's one thing.. And then we have these covered litter boxes. Because my mom's dog wants to eat the poop. She's gonna have to figure out how to keep her dog's face out of the poop. Because I think that more easily accessible the more he will use it.. Multiple cats multiple problems....
