Love this!! I thought I was getting a handle on my scraps. Until today. Yep, found a yard sale that had a bag with 4 jelly roll bundles, and for $2.00, who could pass that up?? Not me, apparently. Now I have even MORE scraps, but this idea would work great for those new strips.
I like the fact that you used rectangles rather than squares for the blocks and I agree: having them going in the same direction is "energizing" to the quilt--lots of movement!
Something new I have been doing to my blocks made similar to this is leave a quarter inch to half inch beyond the foundation ..... Makes it much easier to sew the blocks together or to sashing.... You do have to be consistent in your seam allowance for assembly.
I use my scraps to make quilts for the homeless. Instead of sewing them on paper I use old fabric that I don't think is suitable for quilt tops. Maybe faded, really ugly, or to light weight, or what ever. I sew the scrappy strips on blocks of that fabric. It makes an extra layer of warmth for the homeless and I don't have to peel paper off the backs of my blocks.

Thank you. I have wondered if the full 8 1/2 X 11 inch sheets of cheap copy paper could be used to foundation piece an interesting quilt top. You have done the work for me. I now know that it will work beautifully. I always work on two blocks at a time as I foundation string piece. This is mindless sewing which calms my mind. I waste less thread that way; plus, I have less trouble with my machine. Your quilt top is colorful, interesting, and beautiful. Again, thank you so much.
I am glad you found this video helpful! I love scrappy! If you measured properly, I’m wondering if you could make diamond shapes out of these rectangle blocks that would be very interesting. I might try that on my next video. Thanks for watching!
I love scrappy quilts!! I can probably make at least 4 quilts out of my scraps! I've already made 6 or 7 from my scraps and stash! I won't let myself buy new until the scraps are gone!! Keep on scrapping!!
I hate removing paper so I use RICKY TIMS STABLE STUFF and leave it in the blocks.... STABLE STUFF turns into a soft batting when you wash the quilt or just over time it softens. I also like to cut my string blocks a half inch larger past the "paper" / Stable Stuff. This allows for easier assembly keeping everything out of the seam allowance regardless if it is traditional paper or some other backing.
Gorgeous quilt! And thanks for the tip of using the newsprint paper and discovering it's best to remove the paper before sewing blocks together. That's how we all learn isn't it? Thanks for posting! I loved the idea of using the label on the front!!! Cheers from Minnesota.
I really like your quilt top. Having used that plaid red plaid fabric really ties it together. I have found that when I make a scrap quilt if I have one color that’s a little more dominant than the others it calms down the quilt which that red plaid does in your quilt. Great job.
Indeed! I was making a tote yesterday with some busy fabric and used a plain medium gray strip to break up the busy. That really does help with design for sure! Thanks for watching.
I just came across your channel! I have felt so guilty about all my scraps. You have great ideas and sure make it seem do able. Thank you for your efforts on your videos! Great job!
I keep the paper on the blocks until I get the whole quilt made. This is because the blocks are on the bias and stretch during the sewing process, which is a bigger pain on the neck than removing paper.
I love scrappy! I've been trimming that paper into squares, never thought of keeping it in rectangles. Your Quilt top is pretty and your kitty has great taste! Quilters learn things the hard way sometimes, but we keep at it. Yes, I'm binge watching your videos after discovering you today and have subscribed. Thanks very much.
These are all beautiful, I have watched a couple of your videos using scraps. I am wondering if you have ever done sort of a free hand applique piecing with raw edges? Something that isnt straight pieces of fabric. Looking for some ideas, thx!

I will definitely post something when I finish off that quilt. I am leaning towards a forest type color, like a autumn green, brown, or yellow. I think it would look nice with that rich red check. Thanks for watching!
I keep my printer paper after I’ve made a printing mistake and use it to keep notes on or reprint on the other side. Now I can use my recycle printer stash along with my scrap stash to make a quilt! If I use the clean side up, I shouldn’t have an issue with ink on my fabric
OK, I have a pressing question. Starting at 10:13 it looks like your iron is only maybe 20% on the table. How is it not falling off? Nice quilt. I like using a unifying strip in the middle of my strip quilts, especially it they are scrappy. Enjoy your videos. Thanks for making the time to share.
Wonky Iron! I had to go back and look. Must be a trick of the angle, because it is fully on the table with about an inch to spare. Thanks for your comment :- ) and glad you are enjoying the videos! have a great day!
Not sure if anyone has asked this… can you remove most of the paper and the tiny amount of difficult paper just wash it and let it disintegrate in the washer? I’m not sure but it looks like newsprint and if so it’s very thin.
Great question! ☀️. Sometimes it is impossible to remove every bit, so there's no choice. I try to get most of it, and don't worry about it if I cannot. 💛💛💛. Yes, I am using newsprint for my FPP. ☀️🌸

How in the world did you only have 1 drawer of scraps? 🤯 I have a 25 gallon bin full plus a little shoe box full of scraps, several plastic storage bags or plastic grocery bags full of scraps and leftover scraps in the bottom of project bins of each project. Admittedly the majority of them are in the crumb quilt size. With your leftover 2.5" binding strips, they could have been cut up into squares for other quilt blocks or pieced into one long strip for the Jelly Roll Race quilt. 🙃

$2 ?!? Amazing! Have fun! Thanks so much! ☀️
I use an old sheet, cut up, as a base, rather than paper. It cuts out the ripping out step and gives one more layer of fabric in the quilt.
I have done that as well. My next video features fabric as the base instead of newsprint. Thank you so much for watching and. have a wonderful day.
You could stop at 2 layers and "quilt as you go style" join with sashing, for a summer weigh quilt?
I do the same. Gives it weight.
I've started watching your *Ideas for scraps* playlist - I look forward to seeing what ideas you came up with 🤩 ...this was a good one 😁
Yay! Thank you!☀️♻️
I have scraps but I also have crumbs. I sew crumbs to a sturdy fabric base (felt, canvas etc)
