Reminds me of how my grandfather met my grandmother, he tells the story as they were playing in a church baseball league and their game was at 9am. Then naturally of course they go to the bar after the game at 11.
I can’t begin to comprehend how anyone would give a thumbs down to this . Awesome animation and anything Brian has to say is absolutely true. Best real hockey commentator period.
I can tell you why people would thumbs down it, cuz all senile Burke does is tell old stories and hasn't done anything significant in the past few decades.
@@LegoGBlok sure, but everybody smoked back then. It's like saying: imagine if the league decided to truly abolish hits to the head, Crosby would've been even better. That's irrelevant, cuz this is the time these players lived in, that's all.
I read Gump Worsley's autobiography and it's literally 350 pages of North Stars drinking stories Gump would eat like no one else, smoke, and drink like a sailor.
I remember being 15 years old in the 70's and driving in a snowstorm with my coach and 3 buddies and 24 molson export heading to a tournament in Lindsay Ontario.
I love stories like this. In the present moment in 2021. This is the first time I've heard of Brian Burke. And you know what. Stories like this gets better.
Oh man this brings back memories... road trips on the bus.. bunch of under age kids (bantam). Coaches handing out beers to all the guys ... no wonder we rarely won any road games.
In the early 90's, Brian Burke would come onto Dan Russell's sports talk show CKNW on Wednesday nights. Burke was one of the first NHL managers to have a weekly segment. He was just a pleasure to listen to then as he is now.
@@othaVada agree I listened many years to sports talk, the Burke - Macrae was a couple of interview's that were on Rock 101 morning show with Bro Jake Edwards.
@@JohnMartin-yj3gv I especially remember when MacRae referred to the twins as the “Sedin Sisters” at one point during an interview with Burke… Man, was he PISSED!
Very cool and totally believable... used to play at the Big E and go to Springfield Indians/Kings games... His coach Gary Dineen was a great guy in local hockey... miss him..
That was the 70's in general. I use to buy cigarettes form 7-11 for my older brother when I was like 9. Actually was made to or got beat up by him. That was the 70's.
I grew up in Springfield. We had a great AHL team in the Springfield Indians owned by Eddie Shore. Later the WHA Whalers played there, I saw the whole Howe playing together there.
I was at Springfield Indian games at the Big E and I think I liked the '76 '77 and '78 teams the most. Andre Peloffy was a great player. Pete Laframboise yes. and vaguely remember Burke. only 7 games. As a fan I never knew the drinking habits of that team. Could it be if they were sober they may have won the cup? 😁
There was a certain Montreal Canadian that usually had a smoke going while tying up his skates and one or two between periods. I think he was "the flower" or something like that...
@O K he was the first to come to mind. Also I was a kid playing hockey in Northern Alberta and our team wore Montreal Canadians jerseys so I was blown away when I heard he smoked on TV. There were guys including the coaches and trainers that were drinking and smoking before the game, during intermissions, after the game, after practices basically whenever they felt like it.
Love this. Heard similar stories from guys who worked construction in Toronto back then. At least the only heavy machines these guys dealt with were the other players lol
yea it was different when I lived there at that time. Even health clubs/gyms had a bar in the lobby area, and the workout people would stop and the bar and have drinks and some would smoke.
Here's my Big E experience...I was in Springfield for the "Elite Eight" that's the NCAA's version of March Madness for the small colleges. Next night there was a hockey game so I decided to go..Two things stood out for me. I noticed the press box was encased in chicken wire. Sort of like when the Blues Brothers played in the country and western bar..Second thing..there were so many fights and penalties, the ref warned both teams to smarten up because the game could be called off by the police due the city having a curfew in effect...lol...lol..not making this up...
Lol Eddie shores son is literally my neighbor. Awesome guy and super strong even at 62. Eddie shore is still alive and lives in agawam. Still works out too
Back in the 70's when I was a kid, we went to a Phillies game. We sat in the outfield at the Vet and had a clear view of the Phillies dugout. We always brought binoculars because we always sat in the cheap seats. In the middle of the game, I looked into the dugout and there, in the tunnel that went back to the clubhouse, was Mike Schmidt smoking a cigarette. I was shocked. How could a professional athlete be smoking during a game? I had a lot of growing up to do.
Hilarious The good ole days At SJSU played club rugby early 80’s “Coors” sponsored the team so we had a kegger on sideline Yes we drank while playing And drank more after Cheers
A friend of mine mentioned they'd drink a couple 24 cases each over a game while hackin darts, especially net minders (you've got to be touched in the head in those days to not only stand in front of, but dive in front of high velocity pieces of vulcanized rubber).
Remember hearing how Guy Lafleur, fastest star of his day, would always light up a cig between periods in the Habs' dressing room.. Sadly, he also totaled his car in 1981 after drinking with his teammates. Fortunately, "the Flower" said that caused him to begin taking better care of himself. - Nice job on the video.
I like sports radio, as is. I really do. But I have grown weary of pundits spending segment after segment justifying predictions and transaction rationale ... just so if they are wrong they aren't too wrong. Getting boring. I usually change to music after a few minutes of the yadda yadda. BUT... *I would lock the radio on a sports station if all they did was play audio of retired players telling stories about the old days.*
This is awesome. Love the animation
I could listen to him tell stories about the old days forever.
There isn’t that many stories the guy never even played anywhere
Brian Burke ferociously refused to be with a normal tie on, even when animated
I think he just doesn't know how to make a tie knot
I’m surprise he didn’t demand cufflinks only real men wear cufflinks I met Burke in an airport in Toronto many years ago what a great standup guy
"Don't hang around those boys, don't go near them" --Every dad when their son turns pro
"..they clink glass, and they're drinkin- it's not even noon" lol

How cool is it that the story mentioned the Big E Coliseum in West Springfield Massachusetts. I saw my first pro game there in 1965 or thereabouts.
@@demarcdegasol That I am young fella. I was lucky enough to see the Hockey GOAT play live Robert Gordon Orr.
Guy Lafleur was one of the fastest, smoothest skaters in the game for Montreal and he smoked a cigarette in the locker room between every period.

I absolutely loove this kind of content with the animation! More Sportsnet!
Sportsnet needs a new segment, Story time with Burkie.
RIP to that dream
they could have kept ratings up the whole time during the pandemic like that!
Damn they used "Kids" by Busty and the Bass as the background music. Great Montreal band.
I remember being 15 years old in the 70's and driving in a snowstorm with my coach and 3 buddies and 24 molson export heading to a tournament in Lindsay Ontario.
Animation style is sweet! Would love to see more videos like this!
I have a photo of myself smoking a dart in the dressing room and using an aluminum jock cup as an ashtray.
just found this series and im already addicted to it. Love the stories, Burkie!
"I just lived this movie!" Hilarious.
Oh man this makes me so happy ! More !

Nothing beats these videos. Marek and Burke just play off each other so well.
This channel is absolutely killing it with these animations tied together with interviews great great job
as a kid I got to go in the locker room of an NFL game in 1977 & they were lighting up smokes at half time as well........
Really cool that he mentioned the old colosseum at the big e. Whenever I hear a story about Springfield hockey I smile a bit
This is just an epic story
I don't know why but I loved how he said it was 11:46 in the morning, so specific.
I love these so much
This story's from his book. Any hockey fan that doesn't read it is doing themselves a disservice. Best hockey book in my opinion
Tiger A Hockey Story is about Dave( Tiger) Williams is a great book as well.

The old BigE Coliseum was quite a venue.
