    Quick Brad May story: At 18 yrs of age I was at a provincial junior A training camp; I had never played at a level higher than double A and couldn't believe I hung around until the final cuts. Suffice to say I was a bit starry eyed. One day in comes Brad May and he exuded a degree of confidence and respect that I had never seen. During a training camp scrimmage, the resident tough guy (who was most likely on roids--he was huge) who was desperate to make the team challenged the opposing bench to a fight. He just stood there with gloves off and said, "C'mon! I'll take on every one of you." There was a brief pause before Brad May hopped over the bench looking cool as a cucumber and proceeded to pummel the guy. Everyone just stood there with jaws agap in stunned silence. I was amazed to learn that May was only 16 years old. I didn't make the team, but am happy to keep the memory of Brad May assisting on my first goal. P.S. I forgot to mention that I'm writing from my friend's account. Sorry for the confusion. p.p.s. Thanks to Murmuring for pointing out the grammatical error. Edits are complete.

      Exactly, how do you not follow up on the interview almost turning into a fight.

    • @shpazhist
      @shpazhist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jim Hammill How about listening to the other side first before making perhaps misleading conclusions? Yakupov's first season was actually pretty good. However, there was major coach change after his very first season but where... Yakupov wasn't really in the picture for the way the new coach saw his team would operate from then onwards. Thus, there were, for instance, cases where Yakupov was sat on the bench half-time but the very next day with coach approaching Yakupov and say "Hey, sorry, I first saw the mistake so decided to remove you from the game but apparently there were no mistakes at all so my bad".
      Thus, that's just one point to dispute your claims. Moreover, when Yakupov returned to SKA and SKA's coaches saw him within the team there was more involvement into the play so he did, indeed, had a great season after few years struggling to excel his game in NHL. Thus, all in all, perhaps, there were personal mistakes on his side as he was still quite young, not well versed in politics and stuff like that and.... was predomintanly getting used to North American culture. However, it doesn't change the fact that if someone started talking in the same boorish tione as Burke's talks to their interviewers in this interview, unless others wouldn't be as lackеy as as these bunch of yahoo's who completely ready to suck his cock, not sure if their attitude was any different from Yakupov's...
      Thus, the point I am trying to make is that if you were to listen to Yakupov's interview and hear his viewpoint is that up until you are in top of the league like, for instance, Ovechkin who's been with his team for years so has an enormous amount of respect, trust and that armour to protect himself from even these coach tricks that would not be allowed by Company owner's if they knew what's going on on a daily basis, the more newer and lesser experienced players, i.e. the more middle level player who are doing 80% of all work for the team to perform, are not really under that protection, especially, say in lower ranking teams as Edmonton at the time when Yakupov was there.. thus, there was no way for them not only to excel at large for themselves but to even to protect at a very minimum in order to play every single game staying in top optimal form and shape at the same time to be able to perform at a maximum abilities.

    • @AprehamLincoln
      @AprehamLincoln 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JFJ probably could have been an adequate GM. But as a rookie executive, places like Toronto and Montreal are bad news, especially back then. Ownership was controlling, the fans were ravenous and had high expectations with a demand for instant gratification. Ferguson got eaten alive in that city and dug his own grave with terrible personnel decisions and unwillingness to stand up to his bosses.
      Had he been brought along slowly in a quiet market, he might have turned out okay. But good lord did he screw the pooch in Toronto.
      And somehow, his successor was even worse. Bringing in Cliff Fletcher in a transparent attempt to capitalize on nostalgia was an abomination. The game passed him by 25 years ago. He blew up the team for a rebuild but forgot to get any young assets to go with it, leaving the Leafs with Matt Stajan as one of their top line players.

    Yakupov might be the biggest bust in NHL history. He was highly touted and viewed as a can't-miss prospect during his draft year. Remember all the "Fail for Nail" tanking talk that was happening during his draft year? Fans normally only want their teams to tank when it is a big-time prospect being touted as 1st overall.

    • @Tylerboyd2001
      @Tylerboyd2001 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joe Shannon I believe the biggest bust in NHL history goes to Alexander Daigle. Yakupov is a close 2nd.

    • @beardofdoom8174
      @beardofdoom8174 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s ok. McDavid washed away the Yakupov stank. Nowadays it’s like, “Hey, remember Yakupov?”. And a lot of fans don’t. If they do, they remember what an epic fail he was. As a lifelong Oilers fan, I remember Yakupov. That was a pretty weak draft year, and he was compared to Nuge a lot. Nuge developed into a much better player than Yak ever will be.

  • @BloggerMusicMan
    @BloggerMusicMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Morgan Rielly was probably the best player to come out of that draft year. These last few years he's really proven to be a key part of that Leafs blue line. He isn't just a prolific scorer for a defenceman, he has such acute situational awareness and is a great skater.
    I remember in a game against the Lightning last year, his teammates made a brutal line change which resulted in a 3-on-1 where the Lightning scored. But the one guy on the ice who didn't go for a change was Rielly. He saw the situation unfold and I think actually called for his teammates to stay on the ice. It's one of those little things where even when a situation doesn't go well, he made the right play.

    • @BloggerMusicMan
      @BloggerMusicMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Marvin Santana Hertl isn't bad, but I don't think he's Rielly. Rielly had 72 points as a defenceman his last full year and was fifth in Norris voting. I don't think Hertl has ever had a year like that.
      Rielly rivals Hertl in career points and he's a defenceman. He's also become much better defensively, playing a role Hertl isn't asked to.
