I use Sonnet and am pretty happy with them, but then again they are the first quality watercolors I've bought, so of course they feel much better then the cheap stuff I was using before :)
I'm really happy I found your video on Watercolours because I'm just getting into them, they seem like they are good palettes to start with. Thanks for the help!
Thank you for your comment and for watching ! They're really great and the paint is better than most - even than more costly offerings. It is best to start off with reasonable paint, good paper and just a few good brushes. The brands featured fall into this category and are very economical too. I hope you enjoy watercolours !
I bought ladoga 24 watercolour set and white night swatches are looking very similar to ladoga watercolours . 4 Colours among them have low lightfast rating but they are so bright and good quality I don't mind lightfast rating. I am really happy with ladoga watercolours . Colours are not individually packed like white night and they came in cardboard box like sonnet .
It is a very economical brand to start with, the paint is vibrant and behaves better than most student grade watercolour paint. Thank you for watching and commenting, very much appreciated !
I watched TheFrugalCrafter review of Sonnet before. Just watched it again. She does not say that. We still do not know specifics. There are a lot of possibilities still open as to who manufactures them and what is in them. I've tried Yarka and am very happy with them. Sonnet looks to me like the exact same paint but cheaper. I'll give it a try!
SONNET IS THE STUDENT GRADE OF YARKA/WHITE NIGHT. DO THE RESEARCH AND YOU WILL DISCOVER THIS FOR YOURSELF. SONNET IS CHEAPER, BECAUSE IT IS THE STUDENT GRADE. I LOVE MY WHITE NIGHTS/YARKA, AND I'M SURE THAT SONNET IS ONE OF THE BETTER STUDENT GRADE PAINTS. THIS IS BASED ON WATCHING DEMOS OF PEOPLE LIKE THE FRUGAL CRAFTER AND OTHERS MAKING SWATCHES. BTW: THERE ARE SEVERAL FRUGAL CRAFTER EPISODES ON SONNET AND YARKA/WHITE NIGHTS. KEEP LOOKING AND I'M SURE YOU WILL FIND THE ONE WHERE SHE SAYS IT. SEARCH FOR "SONNET" PERHAPS. SHE WAS EVEN SENT THE PAINT TO REVIEW IT.
The older White Nights paints came in those clear pans same as the Sonnets. Probably the same paint branded differently. Also the pans are smaller than normal full pans.
I have drawn the same conclusion. In side by side comparison , wet or dry the colours appear to be the same and the paint behaves in the same way. Although there seems to be quite a discussion surrounding this issue.Thank you for watching and commenting.
I've seen Sonnet in white pans too like White Nights. But I don't think they're the same if you look on their website, those 2 lines of paints have different color choices, pigment info, swatches & everything based on their color charts. However, their other line Ladoga might be the same as White Nights since their color charts show exactly the same, just less color choices in the Ladoga.
@@KWarnerStudio :-) as I learned, white nights used to be just the brand for export. but everything is different now. you probably know as well, for hundred years or more, even during communism, the russian oil paints were known for being of high quality (or let's say, solid traditional quality). either you got the good oil paint there or you didn't buy one. ther never was a cheap edit of oil paintings. so I don't think, there are 'student' editions here as well. one of them is cheaper, but they used to sell those in cheaper package versions. everything is different now. who knows. but I also had learned, that there is no difference in the colours. I just came here to see, how they look. I wanted to see the differences to schmincke. because they are far too expensive for my taste. thanks for the effort. I will browse a little now here on your channel :-)
I love sonnet, it' s the best colors for me now, if i need a different color, i buy it separately in the art store or online (i live in Russia near S.Petersburg) , for example, there is no Ceruleum blue in Sonnet, i bought the panel with this color in the art store)
Sonnet and White Nights are the same. The clear pans are the older ones and the white pans are updated versions. They are generally decent paints but the browns can be difficult. if not used they can set like concrete.
@Weedus "hardened browns" - stone like, hard to rewet, hard to pick with a brush, especialy soft brush like a squirell. if you happened to come across Winsor & Newton viridian, that has been sitting for a while, you might know what that is.
Thank you for watching ! I rarely use white and a majority that do use white - in my observations - prefer to use a white gouche and appear to do so for their bright highlight - and very sparingly. Also, only in work that is not to be judged or submitted as per regulation. The lightfast reporting structure of Russian paint is different than other reporting structures I more experienced with, however the information is provided. As well , in all brands there are pans or tubes that are more or less lightfast than others. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
so excited to get mine in the mail, are the sonnets chalky at all once they're dry when you rub on them? i currently use winsor & newton cotmans and they're amazing, hoping sonnets compare
I have used them and have found that there is no chalkiness, and are crisp and vibrant . The greens are fantastic. Thank you for watching and commenting. Let me know what you think about the paint after you have a chance to use them.
@Weedus thank you for the tip Weeds. I've just ordered a smaller White Knight palette to try (and think I'll be adding to it with the highest lightfast colours as I go from the sounds of things - looks like a lovely brand!!)

the one you say as sonnet (24 pan ) is being sold as white nights , with the white nights label on each and every pan , is there such a version in your country or did I bought a counterfeit product can you share a list of colors that sonnet came with so that I can compare ps.it was around 40 dollars
it's not counterfeit. there is a 24 colors cardboard (as opposed to the fancy plastic) palette in the white nights range. sonnet is a student grade paints, white nights is an artist grade.
Alyona A mine came in a plastic pallate and the individual pans' wrappings have white nights logo on them but they're nothing alike the ones I've seen reviews about , that's why I wonder if mine is a counterfeit or maybe a really old version of the original
when you say "nothing alike", you mean the package or something else? 'cause the package you describe is nothing unusual. they have a variety of sets you can see if you google акварель белые ночи and go to pictures
It may be marketed differently in other markets. Jacksons Art , jacksonsart.com sells individual pans and offer resource material. This information lists both Sonnet and White Nights - as having the same pigment and colour numbers. When one considers this, perhaps they are identical, and if so, what you have and how they were wrapped and presented really would not matter. Here are the pans that were in my Sonnet pans - 100 Zinc White , 215 Hansa Yellow , 201 Cad Yellow Medium, 216 Golden, 218 Yellow Ochre, 320 Orange Lake, 302 Cad Red Light, 319 Carmine, 313 Madder Lake Red, 321 English Red, 513 Blue, 511 Ultramarine, 508 Cobalt Blue, 507 Turquoise Blue, 607 Violet, 608 Violet Rose, 713 Emerald Green, 718 Yellow Green, 725 Green, 405 Raw Sienna, 405 Burnt Sienna, 408 Burnt Umber, 413 Sepia, 805 Neutral Black
Alyona A Please realize that a manufacturer CAN use the same pigments in their artists and student grade paint. They just use more pigment in the artists grade and more binder in the student grade. Here is the manufacturers website for clarification. Sonnet is the "studio" line. White Nights is the "premiere" line. www.nevskayapalitra.ru/eng/production/watercolor.
Thank you for the suggestion. This was mainly a look at the Russian brands Sonnet and White Nights. I will source Sakura Koi Watercolor and after use of the brand review it. Thank you very much for watching and commenting ! I appreciate you doing so.
Hi Linda, I agree, they are a student or studio brand, my point was it is a better student or studio brand than some others currently offered in the market place. They state the same pigments are used, however, they do not list fillers used in manufacturing. Some studio or student lines are quite expensive and this is a reasonably priced option with warm and cold primaries included in the Sonnet set shown, it would be best to mix tertiary colours than use a few of the browns included. The video was geared towards those that wanted to try the medium but not spend a fortune. Thank you for your comments and passion.
I use Sonnet and am pretty happy with them, but then again they are the first quality watercolors I've bought, so of course they feel much better then the cheap stuff I was using before :)

Hi thanks for sharing 😃. Can you do comparison video between Sonnet and ladoga as well? Pleassseeeeee😁✌️

Sonnet are the student line of the White Night/St. Petersburg. That is my understanding anyway.
It is a very economical brand to start with, the paint is vibrant and behaves better than most student grade watercolour paint. Thank you for watching and commenting, very much appreciated !
INTUITIVE & INSPIRED ART Linda Bloom where did you get that information?
elsa Grace the White Nights/Yarka was from the company. Sonnet was from the Frugal Crafter.

I year ago i bought the sonnet ones and they come in a solid white pans now
The Sonnet colour chart doesn't seem to list Cadmium and Cobalt colours whilst White Nights do.

for those of you arguing about these paints here's the "real" website. www.nevskayapalitra.ru/eng/brands
White nights have more pigment than sonnet. little darker.
vietsub please
It would show integrity of we boycotted White Knights, Sonnet etc until Ukraine is free from Russian aggression.
