  • 15 Hours in the cruise, is it boring, is there anything to do? Today I'll answer these questions and guide you through what long haul airline pilots need to do during the cruise!
    Discord server for the latest videos, upcoming streams and general x plane and airbus chat! / discord
    I am a real world Airline pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the detailed simulations of airliners in MSFS and X Plane. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

    What long haul simpilots do in the cruise :
    - Setup autopilot
    - alt-tab
    - youtube : binge watch 320simpilot videos
    - alt-tab every 5 minutes to make sure you haven't crashed

      I'm quite different:
      -Decide to do a 10 hour flight
      -get in the air with at least 5 mistakes
      -cruise for an hour or two
      -panic because something happened and dont know what to do
      -give up
      Scrambled to find this video to figure out what S/C means

    From what I've gleaned from various forums; the thing Semi-Professional® Long Haul Flight Simmers get up to during the cruise is just leave their PC on all day/night and then go to work or go to bed and then just come back when it's time to descend and land.

It's an area that really isn't covered much in the flight sim community but something I really want to do more often. Things like Atlantic crossings, ETOPS, long haul cruise procedures have always been a mystery that I wanted answers to. Can't wait to know the 787 like I now do the 320 thanks to you.

  • @mdhazeldine
    @mdhazeldine 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Very interesting topic! Not having done a long haul flight in MSFS before, I did wonder how you passed the time. Not wildly different from what I imagined. 3 questions: 1) Do you flip up the HUD during the cruise or leave it down? 2) Do you alternate meal times so 1 pilot is concentrating on monitoring while the other is eating? 3) Do you have to balance your dinner tray on your lap? I assume you're probably missing the famous Airbus dinner tray. haha. Oh and I assume there must be cup holders away from critical instruments, to avoid spilling your drink on the controls or if there is bad turbulence?

    • @320SimPilot
      @320SimPilot  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Thanks for watching! Great questions. You can flip up the HUD, this will depend on airline procedures if you’re allowed to. Eating at the same time on long haul is possible but rare for reasons as you say and there’s plenty of time. Often one pilot will take the radio and have control whilst the other eats. And finally yes, a tray on your lap and yes, I miss the Airbus table!

  • @facethefaceandmore44
    @facethefaceandmore44 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    But if everyone offsets to the right, won’t you all just receive the same amount of wake turbulence anyway, just offset in the same place to the right? Doesn’t it rely on some people to not offset at all?

    After working with an airline years ago, and having multiple opportunities to fly jump seat, I saw what pilots do. While I wont assume all pilots behave as some did, I can also come to the conclusion that the actions I saw werent likely uncommon. If only the passengers knew 😳

    Thank you for a great video. I have a question, maybe a strange one, but anywho. How much “off” were the old planes with regards to fuel planning compared to new modern ones? Like comparing a 747-100 to a modern 787? I assume the new modern planes have more accurate fuel calculations and such? Of course the older planes/engines burned more fuel, but did they have a bigger margin when calculating fuel needed? Thank you in advance 😀

    (Off topic)
    It's Interesting how in the western world, when you talk about wide body planes. It's always about long haul 12+ hours flights.
    In Asia, there are many airlines operate wide bodies for 1-6 hours flights.
    As an Asian, through out my years of traveling on short-medium haul flights, I think I've only ever been on a narrow body twice.
    A300, A330, A350, 777, 787. I could even go on a 1 hour flight on a 747-400 back when they were around.

    • @smxkcher
      @smxkcher 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is very true. South Korea used to operate 747s on the GMP-CJU route, which is about one hour. Same goes for many Japanese domestic flights.

    Quick question for any LH pilots, at what distance do you have a 3rd pilot on Modern Airlines, and where is the bed?

    • @LeTangKichiro
      @LeTangKichiro 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't know about LH. But usually, there is not a one-size-fits-all answer. That's what I know from a big airline in my country. Pilots are evaluated by the rest they have gotten (layover vs staying at home, rest in a crew room, rest in a hotel, rest onboard, rest with jetlag, rest without jetlag...) And flights are evaluated by the length and at what time the flight is (the longer, the higher the fatigue, the more crossed timezones, the higher the fatigue, night flights are especially touchy and so on). From all those assessements, dispatch creates a fatigue index for pilots and for flights. And according to this index, an airline will dispatch two or three pilots. Of course, there is that hard set limit by regulatory bodies (10 hours which can be extended to twelve under special circumstances) which forces an airline to dispatch three pilots in any case, but depending on the fatigue risk of a flight, airlines will also dispatch three pilots on shorter "high-risk flights". So there could be a longer low-risk flight with only two pilots and a shorter high-risk flight with three pilots. I guess many airlines handle it differently. Don't know what LH does in that case.
