  • In this episode i take a look at my Rough Ryder knives in imitation tortoise shell. I also take a look at a few other knives I have in the same material, especially my Marble's Tortoise Shell Knives. Marble's is another house brand of SMKW and are made in the same factory as Rough Ryders. See the slides: • Tortoise Shell slide show

    I love all of these. SMKW tortoise shells are all out of stock. Their tater skin series as well. But they do offer a variety of styles which is what brought me to this video. All of yours are beautiful. Nice collection and as always, thanks for sharing!!

      It appears they are coming out with new tortoise shell knives. So they are out of stock simply because they haven't arrived yet. That's better than out of stock because they are no longer being made! Thanks for the kid words and thanks for watching.

    My favorite Rough Ryder pattern in Tortoise Shell is the large whittler. I haven't seen Rough Ryder use that pattern in any other of their knives and its one of my favorite Rough Ryder knives. I like large beefy folders, like the Rough Ryder Highland Cattleman.

      Which whittler is that Is it the RR2435. If so, I think that is the BoxCar Whittler. It first showed up in Smooth Black Bone about 10 years ago. It definitely doesn't get made that often. I also like the Cattleman.

    I have 3 RR tortoise shell knives. The tiny toothpick , the Razor Trapper, and the Large coke bottle. SMKW still has the Large Coke bottle in stock for around 10 dollars. It's a nice big knife with a very thin profile.

    Hi Tobias. This has been a great review of some really nice knives. I have quite a few straight razors in tortoise shell scales (mostly Swedish razors). It’s wonderful stuff. It looks like RR does a good job imitating a natural material that is really hard to copy. It also looks like I have some shopping to do . Thanks for the overview.

    I dont have any of the tortoise shell knives but its easy to see why they would be so collectable! Thanks for sharing them Tobias!

      Maybe if they had a tortoise shell that was a little more red. Thanks for watching, JB.

    I've seen some of the RR tortoise shell on Ebay, but rarely much variety & often at least twice the price of the original. They do look nice.

    Great collection ! I really like the small Congress pattern that you didn't like so much. I'm going to see if I can track one of those down. 😁

    I like the faux tortoise..it was a plastic developed from a earlier era used in 👀 glass frames, makeup kits & other decorative items.
    I have the locking large sodbuster in tortoise shell

    Almost all ladylegs look silly, but the Rough Ryder large ladyleg has different proportions and that tortoise shell looks nice. Functionally, it’s a toothpick with a boot shaped bolster. I’m disappointed that boot isn’t a better bottle opener, but I managed.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. It will work as a bottle opener but it will not work well as a bottle opener. They also make a small leg in tortoise but I just can't bring myself to buying it!

      I really wished that RR would get back to a simple ringed bolster ( maybe with a pinch) and the old round horseshoe shield. I'm sick of that big R on the bolster.

    Not a huge fan of the covers, but I find this series interesting because they use 440B steel.

    Have always liked tortuga but sometime I buy some'n that is just not through and through solid, just a coat and looks like dung w/ wear and use. I like my RRs but wish they were more consistent. I have some that arnt perfect and other that are great. Most speaking about proud springs

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I know that about 5-7 years ago there were some major quality control issue with the RR brand and i know many of these knives are still be sold, especially on eBay. I know exactly what you're talking about with the proud springs. I get that for the price, you shouldn't be looking for perfection but you do expect consistency from knife to knife.

    Beautiful looking knives. I’m partial to the doctors knife and the sod buster. How “shaving capable” is the straight razor pattern? When DID the “leg” knives first appear on the scene? I don’t remember ever seeing any growing up.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias

      They have been around for an extremely long time, falling the category of "Figural Knives". They date back to the Roman Times, long before the shoe the became a bottle opener. The idea of using the shoe as a bottle opener dated from around the 1920's. They were never really popular and were mostly cheap advertising knives. I think the resurgence of the pattern started about 15 or so years ago, but I could be wrong. Jim Parker also had a tendency to remake a lot of old patterns back in the 1980s. But they were not widely sold.
