I have three of these wasp series knives. The blades are very polished and smooth including the cutting edges on the blades. They don't feel sharp when you touch the cutting edge of the blades. All three of mine are like this except that they are sharp as heck. Don't be fooled by them and get cut. They are very sharp.
The second tool on most doctor’s knives is not a tongue depressor actually, but a spatula used for counting/sorting medications (and a similar tool is still used by modern pharmacists). The flatten but also has a purpose; crushing medicine for use in tonics. The history of some traditional knives is very interesting and a window into how knives are some of the most practical tools ever invented.
