    I primarily picked this knife up because it is a single blade Barlow. While not perfect, this one gives me a little hope in this latest Tortoise Shell line from Rough Ryder.

    Not one tortoise shell knife is the same, mostly not every side of the covers and that's the charm of it. Makes it look more natural. The one bladed barlow is very attractive. Thank you for showing Tobias.

    My barlow came with a big piece of the black material in the blade well on one side . Big enough that the blade was touching the liner because of it . When I chipped it out of there it went to center. So all in all mine is great now . I'm really glad they started making single blade barlows .

      Yeah, the so called black liner goop gets all over everything! I've almost sent back three knives because of that crap. It's easy to clean up but it should also be easy to spot at the factory! Very annoying!

    Hi Tobias:
    You DO have a lot of tortoise shells. 😊 The only one I possess is the Razor Trapper, a pattern I really like. I believe I have all the Razor Trappers that Rough Rider made.
    I really like the tortoise shield on these new ones. I may have to pick up a couple.

    May need to get the bow trapper now, seems like the action is pretty solid. I'd not heard the small trapper called a Trapper Nut before guess I'll have to do some more light reading tonight and see what that's all about. Thanks, TG

    I've got a tortoise shell cub with very good fit/finish, but some side-to-side blade play. After watching Kaniffy's review of the Barlow, I ordered 2, one for a gift. I'm hoping to get the bolster engraved with a monogram. The video was excellent, very informative.

    A lot nicer than the tortoise shell trapper from Marbles I got from SWKW.

      Not sure about the Trapper but I have quite a few of the Marbles Tortoise shell that are pretty good. Tortoiseshell is always better if you can hand pick it. That's what I wished I could do!

    My barlow tortoise emblem sunk in deep and left a hole. They must melt them in.

    This new series Tortoise Shell is growing on me, I like it more now than at first. Talk about luck of the draw, the shield on my example is centered and straight. You never know what you will get, but I'm usually OK with it unless it is really defective. I like this little Barlow a lot.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. This was a $13 knife. you don't get perfection for $13!

    Was debating whether or not to get this knife. Seems to be a common occurrence that they are coming with cracked scales near the pins… still on the fence with this one. Though I do like the tortoise shell.

    I always prefer a single blade Barlow, but it’s interesting to see all 4 of these knives are single blades, even where the default would be a twin. Are there multi blade offerings in this run?

  • @LarsRibe
    @LarsRibe ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting. I really like the looks of those. Might have to get something nice with tortoise shell 🙂 A non related question: I have the last 6 months or more really enjoyed my pocket knives, that get a patina on the blade. There's some CV from Case, C75 from Otter Messer and (I think) T10 from Roper Knives. What is your experience (in use) with the RR carbon knives?

  • @censusgary
    @censusgary ปีที่แล้ว +2

    For me, a crack in the handle scale is a disqualification. In an antique knife, it would be understandable, but a new knife should have better quality control than that.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to agree with you, especially when you're talking about plastic!

  • @bdh3949
    @bdh3949 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice review Tobias, but because of all the goofiness (off center shield, cockeyed placement, leaky undercoat) cracks, as well as the undersized pattern (it should be stronger/beefier even for a $15 knife imo) I'm gonna pass on this one. I do hope they make a regular sized fish knife.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get it. All the little thing do add up! Same here when it comes to a fish knife and/or toothpick. But I could also use a mid-sized toothpick!

    I like the Barlow knife and Tortious Shell. I prefer small knives with lighter pulls. Struggling to open a small knife keeps me from wanting to use it. That is one thing Swiss Army Knives do the best.🙂

    That’s actually a great looking Barlow. Glad they cut back on the billboarding on their knives. They were almost as bad as Marbles for a while with that nonsense.

    Hello. Thanks for video. One question - what is the name of the big, one blade knife (5:50)? Thanks.

    • @KnifeChatswithTobias
      @KnifeChatswithTobias  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi. Glad you enjoyed the video. The knife that appears at 5:50 is the RR510 Rough Rider Tortoiseshell Coke Bottle. It's about 5 1/8 inches when closed. It is based on the Case 050 Coke Bottle knives. Case discontinued the pattern in 1976 but did have a special run of them in the 1980s. (Just to be clear Rough Rider and Case are no the same company but Rough Rider has made several patterns based on discontinued Case knives - as well as knives discontinued and forgotten patterns)
      This pattern is most commonly called a coke bottle these days but the pattern pre-dates Coca-Cola and it trademarked bottle. It was originally called a Swell Center, then later a Fiddle Back or Beaver Tail. This particular frame was first used by Case in 1915. It was a variation of the more classic Swell Center in that it combined a "Copperhead" style front bolster to the more common Swell Center frame. So I guess you could also call this knife a Copperheaded Coke Bottle if you wanted to.
