      You are welcome. A lot of people forget what era Doom 3 released in, or are too young to know what era it was released.

      @@ANobodyReviewsGames-wm9gg - Yeah, I like to remind people that each Doom game is a product of its time. The Classic had the privilege of coming out in a time when the genre was in its infant stages and thus had the greatest freedom to "do its thing." Doom 3, on the other hand, was a part of the post-HL landscape, but it also came out in the wake of years of criticism that the Classic Dooms were just "mindless shooters with no story" - one more reason for the game's overall design direction...

      @@AlexeiVoronin Plus, when you think about it, Doom 2016 and Eternal are just as much not like the original Doom as Doom 3 is. Great Doom games as well, but they're really not Doom either. You're right, Doom 3 was released when the term "Doom Clone" was a negative term. Serious Sam was a throwback shooter that reviewed well because it was cheap, because most people wouldn't have paid full price for one of those "Doom Clone' kind of games.

      @@ANobodyReviewsGames-wm9gg Well said. i always roll my eyes really hard when someone starts telling me how the new Doom games are somehow a "return to form." I grew up with the Classic Dooms and I surely don't remember them having glory kills, magical chainsaws or NES-style platforming :P

    Really enjoyed this review. You explained why Doom 3 is such a departure from previous games better than I've ever heard it explained before. Doom 3 is still my favorite entry in the series. I agree with you so much about this era of shooters being something special. Don't worry about missing out on the multiplayer though. From what little I played it was underwhelming like many tacked on multiplayer modes of the time, which was especially disappointing considering id's previous title Quake III is my favorite arena shooter of all time.

      The few reviews I had seen of Doom 3 prior to making this review were done by kids who were in diapers when it hit, and they just didn't understand the era it released. I just wanted to remind people of that era. Looking back today at how popular retro Doom is, and seeing modern Doom, Doom 3 seems like a strange swerve in the design, until you look at the era of shooters it released in. At that point, we were still looking forward to the future, as opposed to now where retro is cool. At the time, any game that played like retro Doom would have been seen as archaic in it's designs. It would not have scored well unless it was released at a discounted price like Serious Sam. People forget how much of an impact Half-Life had on gaming.
      I love Doom 3. I always have, and always will.

    I recently replayed Half life and Doom 3 within a few months of each other. Yeah, I did notice the similarities. This time around, Doom 3 felt like a higher quality Half Life. Hell reminded me of Xen :). Which is ironic, since the whole "portal opens to unleash monsters" was the storyline of the original Doom 1 :D.
    Also, I remember when I first played through Doom3 back in 2006--7. As far as I remember, I finished it in one night. It was as if I was glued to the computer.

      If you haven't already, give Aliens vs. Predator 2 (2001) a try - and count how many similarities with Doom 3 you'll find in there as well ;)

      @@AlexeiVoronin I did also replay AVP 2 relatively recently, although I must admit I did not enjoy it *as* much as Doom 3 or HL. It was a good game though. In fact, I went through the first part of Delta Labs in Doom 3 thinking: "oh, so they're doing the AVP thing now" :)) . It was all quiet with no monsters for a good part of that level.
      As a side note, I was a lot more fascinated with the AVP universe as a kid, but the 2004 movie dampened my enthusiasm for it.

      I will change the new intro up. I'm not gonna use 2.5D productions anymore, but I can switch up my intro every now and again. Maybe I should change it every year just to be different. If you look closely, there are still snippets of my old intros from my teh2Dgamer channel.

    Will be honest as a big Doom fan:
    Doom 3 is certainly not a bad game. Like the games in the series before it, it is a technical marvel. It introduced a few things we use today in games, like strong use of decals, dynamic lighting and shadows, and normal mapping. However, where Doom 3 fails at a game is being a *DOOM* game. Doom since the first game has never had a bug story, nor big story telling or narrative, nor were they slow and atmospheric much, they were straight action games that were u just a "kill em all" fun time. Think of it as if suddenly, the Coen brothers directed a Fast n Furious movie about how the world sucks because the increase in vehicle related crimes. That would divide an audience because that's not what Fast n Furious is about, and such is the case of Doom. Doom is still the fast paced "kill em all" sort of game, and Doom 3 is overlooked because its different. Maybe if the game were called something else that wasn't "Doom 3", but still related to Doom, it would have gotten a little more attention now.

    • @AlexeiVoronin
      @AlexeiVoronin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For a "big Doom fan" you surely say a lot of mind-blowing bullshit. Especially the "maybe if the game were called something else" part, which is downright insulting to anyone who plays and loves the Doom series.
      Sorry for being so blunt, but just think about it - Doom 3 is a game where you're a space marine... in a UAC base... on Mars... where teleportation experiments take place... and cause a demonic invasion... which you have to fight with an assortment of weapons... one of which is a BFG 9K. Hmmm, does this sound like the description of a Super Mario game to you? No, it sounds like the description of a Doom game... and that's problably because it *IS* a Doom game.
      If this game had been released under a different name, everyone would have said "But this obviously is a Doom game, why didn't you just call it Doom and release it as such?" And they'd be right to say so.
