In this video, singer/songwriter Carl Tosten reviews the AC3R, an all-solid electric-acoustic guitar with Rosewood back and sides and a hand-selected premium Sitka Spruce top. The AC3R features Yamaha's original concert-size body style and their flagship System-63 SRT (Studio Response Technology) pickup and preamp combination.
The SRT system lets you choose from three different high-end mic types as well as two mic positions that let you use techniques similar to those used in a recording studio. This video includes a side-by-side demonstration of the six basic configurations you can create using this system - using Neumann U67, Neumann KM65, or Royer R-122 mic samples at either close or distant proximity. We used a Yamaha THR10 amplifier for the demo.

Beautiful playing and one of the most useful and coherent demonstrations that I've ever watched on TH-cam. Well done Carl!

Carl, your short piece makes me want to go out & buy that guitar. Absolutely beautiful playing. I could really hear a difference between those mics and their proximity settings. Awesome pickup / preamp.

Thanks all for your kind words, what I wanted to do in this demo was demonstrate the guitar in standard tuning with chords people normally play and recognize. I've seen lot's of demos that turn out being about the player and not the guitar. I was trying to avoid that so that people could hear for themselves what it might sound like if they picked it up in a store and started playing. Alternate tunings change the character of the instrument. You can find that out for yourself. Carl

I just bought a A3R. Liked it better than the Martins and Taylors of the same price at Guitar Center, just as an acoustic guitar. I don't hear much difference in the different mike configurations at home and I don't hear much in any TH-cam demos either. But your demo is the best I've seen because you play the same thing in each setting and that makes the subtle differences easier to hear.

Very useful demo. Thank you. I could really hear the difference in the mic settings on the preamp setup. I've been looking at the A1 series in the interest of saving some money. Now, however, I think I'll save for a bit longer and go for the System 63 preamp. And Sunburst! Thanks again for a great demo. A lot of other "demos" could learn from this.

I bought the AC3R-VS. I love the vintage look of the guitar. I had the pickguard taken off and the guitar looks wonderful. I play fingerstyle and I don't have to worry about scratching the top.

I recently Purchased the AC3R Limited "Bearclaw" #38 of 50. I am a Professional musician, and This is The Best Preamp/ pickup system I've ever used!
I perform using a Bose L1 Model 2 system, with the B2 sub, and Tonematch Mixer! I had to Tune the Body of my guitars, literally loosing Natural resonance of the guitar! I have Zero Feedback with the SRT System

Im still a beginner in recording my acoustic electric Yamaha. Is it best to get a Focusrite 2i2 audio interface and experiment with the SRT preamp?

That's why you go to the store, these are meant to provoke interest in actually putting the guitar in your hand and plugging it in to whatever amplification source you are gonna use, it all makes a big difference. Carry on.

Bought this guitar based mostly on this video and some write-ups I read online. Guitar Center $899 with a high quality Yamaha case. Guitar is best value-for-dollar you will find. Sounds well made and beautiful. Very happy with purchase.

I think guitar is sometimes not so important for a guitarist. It's dependents on the GUITARIST. Dude you are a really great guitarist.

They did kinda tried to follow Maton's 6 crystal pie-zo technology bridge pick-up system and also their 2 AA batteries. Also I notice they are using many fingerstyle guitar players to demo their A series guitars probably attempting to reach into the fingerstyle 'guitar market'. Of course there are many more original features from Yamaha itself like their mic moduling and their own SRT system.

I'm at a lost as to which one to get. I am leaning toward AC3R but I played a Taylor 210ce at the music store and loved it. I have not tried the AC3R but all the reviews say its AS good as the Taylor and its obvious that Yamaha was putting the A series in direct competition with the Taylors. Right now its (AC3R) 800 bucks at sweetwater with a free hardshell case and a $100 rebate. Taylor is 1200 with a soft shell padded case (sounds cheap) I already have a Yamaha FG345 and love it. I need a quality plug in and cut away though and I think what is going to decide this is the electronic system. Is the SRT pick up in Yamaha better than the ($400 better) than the ES-T in the Taylors? Its hard finding any specific info on comparing these electronics. They both claim to be cutting edge. . Going to try and find a AC3R today to play. Im a Yamaha fan and I am not going to buy a Taylor just because its a Taylor but if its 400 bucks better I may.

I have a taylor 210ce, it's a good guitar but it ends up disappointing when it's plugged in ... there's a pretty big difference between its acoustic and amplified sound :( I'm interested in ac3r and I've seen it looks like it's a much more balanced guitar Between the acoustic sound and the amplified sound ... besides having a pick up much more evolved than those of taylor .. so I think it compares well more yamaha ... is cheaper, has better pick up (more Versatil and better capture, more real) and besides having solid top, which alias taylor is laminated, only from the models 300series is that it has solid. I hope that my opinion has served for something :)

    • @coolmonkaman
      @coolmonkaman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with you Marco. Taylor no doubt sounds good when you play without plugged in. However, when I plugged in Taylor 114ce it sounds ok. I liked sound of Yamaha AC3R much better. Best thing is their pickup system and I think one have to go to the Taylor 300 series to find the equal to the Yamaha.

yes there is, it's not that Rosewood is better though. Mahogany wood gives a more "warm" tone, rosewood is better for the lows and highs.
