4:40 Actually, Super Shotgun delivers damage equivalent of THREE regular shotgun shots (while consuming two shells of ammo). That's what makes it so useful, it literally makes each shell deal 150% damage compared to normal, so you're actually saving ammo using it.
Monsters fighting each other is a "feature" of the doom engine. Not originally intended but the devs at ID loved it so it stuck around. Doom 2 even has a level where you can(and should) get the two boss enemies to fight each other.
As a fan of Doom,I love your names for the monsters: "the centaur" and "rocket hand guy" killed me! It really captures the idea that you're discovering the game.
It's like when your mom guesses Pokemon names or something! xD It almost feels surreal to have someone who's obviously very invested in video games in general not know the names of common doom enemies. Very wholesome.
Doom 64 is actually the third Doom game, so that's the main reason it could be easy to confuse with Doom 3, which is actually the 4th Doom game. Because it was actually a totally different game than Doom or Doom 2, there was demand to have Doom 64 on other platforms, and a PC port of Doom 64 was actually released for PC just a few years ago, and was positively received by fans of retro shooters. The original Doom 64 had brightness levels which were optimized for using properly calibrated CRT displays in pitch dark rooms, which was not the smartest choice by the developers. They were using pitch dark rooms for testing, and it looked good to them at the time. They definitely should have gone with a higher contrast aesthetic. The graphics were actually pretty good for the time, especially considering the framerate, which was smoother than normal for the time.
I know that when Doom 64 came out, I thought it was just a port of Doom to the N64, but with new sprites, didn't realise it was a whole new game with new levels.
I am watching every N64 game. And I mean all of them. The twist is the next game I watch is randomly selected so I have no clue what's coming next. This is the journey to watching every N64 game.
Haha, the reason you were having so many problems with the final boss at first was because of how you were using the BFG. It actually works more like a shotgun; when the ball hits something, the gun shoots a bunch of invisible rays, and that's where most of the damage comes from. That's why facehugging her worked out for you, you were hitting with the full damage potential of the BFG.
Its actually even more unintuitive and jank than that. The invisible projectiles it shoots don't just come from the weapon, they come from the weapon and go in the same direction as the original projectile, regardless of where the player is or where they are facing when this happens. You can fire the BFG projectile, walk behind a wall and turn 180 degrees and the invisible projectiles will magically come out of your back and hit the wall. This means that not only do you have to know there are invisible projectiles you have to try and hit the enemy with, but also you have to know that you can no longer change the direction you are aiming once you fire. Its honestly just crap weapon design and I have to wonder if it started out as a mistake. If the projectiles started from the point of the projectile's impact, it would make perfect sense. In the original weapon design, multiple visible projectiles were fired from the gun itself, this also would have made sense. Seemingly what we ended up is some bizzare combo of the two that is never explained to the player.
@@danielpope6498to add onto this, in the alpha versions of doom there's a scrapped version of the bfg that shoots a big barrage of 40 energy balls, that was changed because they were worried that that many projectiles would cause low end computers at the time to struggle.

Great vid! Doom 64 can be VERY mean, but I love it. The new PC/console port plays a TON better if you ever feel like revisiting in your free time, and it also fixes a lot of issues you had with the game. Honestly given your background in Mario romhacks, I think you'd have a lot of fun getting GZdoom to play through Ultimate Doom/Doom2 and then checking out some custom wads.
Always fun watching non Doom players trying to play this game. There's so many little things to know about the game and strategies. I like seeing someone play without all that every now and then.
Hi Thab, nickvick413 here. I am glad we finally made it to my favorite N64 game! Just FYI you did the puzzle in Final Outpost with the pillars with switches by accident it appears, the intention is to get the plasma gun by lowering the correct pillar. Only 2 pillars can be lowered and you can use the computer monitor as a guide where it is above the pillar room
I quite enjoyed that montage at the end with the time skips synced to the music. Kudos to your editor it made enjoyable what must have been torture to play through lol
This game is amazing and the remaster from Night Dive is amazing too. Such an awesome fun game with great atmosphere and some genuinely tough puzzles. Growing up I never knew it was completely separate game from the original Doom. Very happy to have played this years later. This one is an N64 classic.
8:38 Actually although CRT's are known for darker blacks, the contrast is better so you can see much better in dark compared to LCD's. Doom 64 was still way too dark at default but fine with brightness maxed.
Retro Doom seems to be one of those series that gets more fun the better you know the game. Most of my time playing the games is spent wandering the same hallways completely lost running past the same shotgun guy's corpse over and over until I happen to make a different turn and find a new switch. I can imagine how satisfying it would be if you knew the levels and the enemy spawns like the back of your hand; it would be like Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow by the end of it.
The final boss' attack pattern is so frustrating. Because it at first can seem like there's a rhythm and pattern to it you can dodge, like weaving around the flames it shoots along the ground. But the missiles it emits at the same time are homing, and really good at homing, so much so if they miss you, they will keep trying, and if you ARE good at dodging them it just means they'll bunch up and one-shot you as a cluster when they eventually catch up to you and hit their mark, unless you can get them to collide on a wall. And can easily kill you as the boss is dying, too. Luckily you seemed to either be told or stumble into how the BFG is best used and just blasted it point blank, before its BS attacks can catch you too much. One of the things I do like about this game though is, it has some pretty serious secrets. It's more than just those 3 levels you missed, there's even a secret level in the first level that is like some straight up Kaizo Doom or something. And if you beat it, you unlock a cheat menu for the playthrough. Always thought that was cool.
I just noticed looking up Goldeneye on the spreadsheet that the video should come in maybe early December. The movie was released Nov 21st back in 1995, and the game was at least released in the UK in November of '97 (August in the US though). Not exact dates, but pretty close to a November release for your Goldeneye vid also, which is almost a cool coincidence!
The last level is even more difficult, because there is no infighting in specifically this level. Infighting is less important in Doom 64, because there is less enemy variety than in Doom 2
Fun fact: The 2016 Doom reboot & Doom Eternal were actually direct sequels to the "plot" of Doom 64. In Doom 2016 Doom Guy awakes from his sarcophagus after waiting in Hell for the demons to return & the Unmaykr makes its 1st appearance after 25 years in Doom Eternal. Very random indeed considering this game didn't sell particularly well during its original release but I suppose the retrogaming community from the past 15 years has elevated its visibility and it's now correctly considered a true hidden gem of the N64 - some ID devs must have been Nintendo fanboys back in the day... 🤣
Funny that you hated the skulls and invisible demons in this game, because I remember them being somewhat of a highlight for me. The skulls were much slower and easier to dodge in DOOM 1 & 2, while they seemed like a real threat in DOOM 64, and the invisible demons were actually hard to see unlike the pixel invisibility in the originals. It upped the difficulty and gave it more of a horror feel. I do remember bashing my head against the wall that is the mother demon though, that definitely feels like it was overtuned, so kudos for finally beating it legit.
someone has probably said it already but you DID solve the pillar room lol, there's a plasma cannon in there I think and you picked it up, it only gives you two chances to solve it

Trivia, the original Doom was named after a line in the pool movie The Color of Money. There’s a scene where Tom Cruise takes Paul Newman’s fancy cue out to a pool hall and someone asks him what he’s carrying. “Doom” is his one word response and proceeds to destroy everyone at every game he plays, ruining their chances of hustling people for more money.
8:38 Actually, on a CRT the game would come out brighter because CRTs have generally better contrast than modern LCD screens. You'd have to get one of those really recent OLED panels to match a CRT. Also, playing DOOM 64 when it's dark outside helps a ton too.
The game DOES have music, technically. It's just ambiance. It being "more laggy" if it had actual music doesn't make sense. The files would be handled the same either way, just the notes would be different. This was a design choice just like PS1's DOOM (it uses similar ambiance).
Hey, yeah! On ultra-violence, I started leaning on it much harder the further I got in, to take care of mancubi and pain elementals. I started clearing waves of foes with it, "fuck it, Ive got the ammo and spare on the ground." But thinking about doom64 as a cheeseable game once you get the full potential of the unmaker unlocked, .... Sometimes Id rather struggle through with rockets and plasma.
man i used to love this game. one thing i noticed (i know it doesnt matter now) is that you werent using the chainsaw for things like the little pink guys or the invisible guys. its kinda like megaman where there is a best weapon for each different kind of enemy. the skulls is chain gun etc. Nice job beating it i did the same i didnt find secret levels either!
Yeah, the modern remaster is so much better. It brightens up the game, has more intuitive controls, and allows you to save mid-level. If anyone is intrigued to play Doom 64, the remaster is the way to go.
I played Doom on a win 95 pc. The person who built it for some reason didn't install it on the desktop so i had to do C:/run/doom.exe on command prompt. The moral of the story is that I'm old😊
Some legend installed quake to my primary school network. And the know was passed onto the worthy few. I still remember the dos command. Run.woodstock.exe that was 27 years ago. The autism runs strong in this one. 😂😂
Actually, regular Doom was a Dos game. There was a Doom 95, but it had to be purchased separately (either on Games for Windows disc, or with a retail copy of Doom 2 released after 1996).
Sounds normal. Doom 95 was pretty uncommon, so the majority of doom games would have been the dos version. Installing dos games to the desktop from dos was annoying, so installing to c:/ (default directory) was common. For myself, it was c:/doom/doom No need to add exe
Midway's levels in this one are much more my style than in Doom 1/2. But like a lot of folks, I ignored this one BITD because its title sounded like 'just doom on n64'--and shortly afterward goldeneye came out.
Doom 64 is a pretty good Doom. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but it holds up. The final boss is tough without powering up the Laser gun thing. (Forget the name) The Night Dive PC release of this is worth playing.
The Unmaker (laser guy) is pretty incredible and definitely worth trying to power up al the way in the secret levels. You go through the enemies at the end like butter. Maybe its because I played the game so much back in the day but it was frustrating watching this guy be so bad at it and also insult it because he sucked at it. Doom 64 is incredible with one of the most moody sountracks ever created. I also agree that the Doom 64 HD remake (available on all systems) is absolutely where most modern gamers should play it. Its 100% the original game with added brightness and polish
I love this game, but admittedly it’s not great to play on the original hardware. The remastered version of it on Switch is probably my favorite Doom game.
Honestly... without knowing the mechanics of the Mother Demon and especially how the BFG works, that boss is some brutal design... So I feel that pain.
For the pillar room with the camera: you're supposed to look at the camera before lowering any pillars. This will show you which pillar to lower to get the item, since you only get one shot at it.
As an experienced doomer, watching a newer player realise that partial invisibility is bad and Pain Elementals are annoying is amazing. Loved this video!
I gotta say. I've been playing doom for a decent bit of time, and have spent a lot of time listening to people who know about doom. Seeing someone react to a doom game having never played one before is really quite refreshing. Fun Fact: Doom 64 is very much its own game. It has a decent amount of differences form the original 2 releases, was only officially released on PC relatively recently with the release of Doom Eternal in 2020.
I remember hating this game and felt your pain having to play through this. I keep hearing how good the new doom games are and have stayed away based off my 9 year old experience with this game
Respect the review! I'd personally give the game 10 for enjoyability and 6 for difficulty (on Watch Me Die!), but I'm way more experienced with the game than Thab. I always go for the 3 demon keys, but I never use them to block the demons in the last level. I enjoy the fight as it is.
Loved this game when i was a teen and it was new, the darkness never really bothered me but I was playing it with all the lights out on a bit CRT so I'm sure that helped. LOVED the atmospheric music of this game, my fav classic Doom. The trick to beating that final level is really to just let the mobs kill each other, take cover and kill any skulls that find you, but they will fight each other, then you're fresh for the boss. The AI in these old games is very bad lol
DOOM 64 is one of those insanely rare gems that are underrated AF. Anyone who likes DOOM but hasn't played this game are doing themselves a disservice. It's easily one of the best ones made in the series (IMHO) and I replay it often b/c of how good it actually is.
Id software games are all part of a multiverse of sorts. Doom 64 is the canon sequel to Doom 2 while Doom 3 is the story of a different space marine from another universe fighting the forces of Hell. Hell itself is like a gap between dimensions that links the different universes together. So the games are connected but they're not part of a single story.
Best strategy for beating The Absolution without the upgraded Unmaker and keys imo is to circle strafe the arena, let the monsters start infighting, and then finish off whatever's left with the SSG and rockets. That way your BFG is conserved for the Mother Demon. If you keep circle strafing and hide behind the demon teleporters you can avoid her homing missiles that way too.
Double chainsaw yeah. Moat level and Dark Entries were the first really hard levels, then I really liked that level with the outdoor brown square and rows of cacodemons that appeared behind walls.
@@ngeno I imagine people thought it was a port of DOOM because they just didn't play the game. The name DOOM 64 does not imply it's a new game in the series, only that it's DOOM on the N64.
I've only played the ports of this to various Doom engines in Windows, so I'm not exactly an expert, but... Not being able to jump, but being able to sprint across gaps, hunting for keys and switches, and encountering traps, are all elements of the original Doom. However, the extreme darkness seems to be exclusive to the N64 version, at least among classic Doom ports.
Centaurs? I think you are meaning Satyrs. A Centaurs is a horse with human torso replacing the neck and head. A Satyr is a human with goat styled legs and hoofs.
I believe he’s already played it, just hasn’t made a video yet. There is about a 1-1.5 year delay between when he plays a game to when he uploads the video. He’s about 3/4 of the way through the N64 library with ~100 to go
My Dad cannot play any video games starting with this era. He blames the shift to 3D, yet out of me and my 3 brothers, we had to have him beat DOOM for us, and he made it look easy.
@@tacticalteamkilling6539 obviously lol I think he just got too busy raising us kids and had more fun getting to see us play as gaming evolved. He would always buy us horror games because those were his favorite to watch.
26:44 Damn, if only let the game idle a little bit when you died. The game wouldve still registered you beating the level and it wouldve looked pretty epic to have died keeping the demons in hell. And if youre wondering what happens if that does occur, youll start the next level (unless its the last level) but youll start like you do when you choose to just restart without loading. And also im glad im not the only person who thought about the font on Final Outpost.
Just like Shadow Man, Doom 64 is a game best enjoyed not on retro hardware, but rather, the remasters made by Nightdive Studios, both games had quicksaves added which makes playing them far less frustrating and more enjoyable.
Another great video! I definitely recommend that people play it using an emulator with save states. Not being able to save mid level made me quit it as a kid.
Given how well know the doom enemies are. The descriptions of them in this is the most zoomer thing ever. And well done for beating this it wasn't easy
I like ambient music better, it gives a darker vibe to the game, same goes for Quake 2. I never beat that game, I used to just play around the levels killing enemies and I thought it was fun. I can't imagine how frustrating it is to spend 3 hours trying to kill a boss. It was fun to watch.
Brightness slider was an 11th hour edition when beta testing started and beta testers found game to be hard to see. Apparently Development was done in a different environment where the devs couldn't see the issue.

man i used to love this game. one thing i noticed (i know it doesnt matter now) is that you werent using the chainsaw for things like the little pink guys or the invisible guys. its kinda like megaman where there is a best weapon for each different kind of enemy. the skulls is chain gun etc. Nice job beating it i did the same i didnt find secret levels either!
25:45 Holy moly great work on the killing montage!
The timing of your videos being not consistent is honestly appropriate and understandable because these games are so hard to beat and confusing ! 😂
Yeah, the modern remaster is so much better. It brightens up the game, has more intuitive controls, and allows you to save mid-level. If anyone is intrigued to play Doom 64, the remaster is the way to go.
What system is the remaster available for or it’s PC?
@@veightrwd8828 Most anything, we own Doom 64 on Switch. The ported it allover.
the remastered version is so much better. it also has quick save/load features
That's a good moral.
OG copies of doom used MS DOS. Don't feel bad, I remember it too.
For myself, it was c:/doom/doom
No need to add exe
Midway's levels in this one are much more my style than in Doom 1/2. But like a lot of folks, I ignored this one BITD because its title sounded like 'just doom on n64'--and shortly afterward goldeneye came out.
Seeing Thab completely fail at using both the rocket launcher and bfg is somehow both frustrating and entertaining at the same time.🤣
It is interesting to see Thab be bad at a game I am actually descent.
@@MrYuriTambor So are you a Switch game since this was a Nintendo game?
@@encycl07pedia- Nope, I still have my N64.
@@MrYuriTambor You don't even realize I'm mocking your English. It figures.
@@encycl07pedia- strange since you are the one being bad at it
Ahhhhh, it seems Thab is back to weekly uploads?? Good, I can stop worrying about him
Doom 64 is a pretty good Doom. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but it holds up. The final boss is tough without powering up the Laser gun thing. (Forget the name)
The Night Dive PC release of this is worth playing.
From the doom 64 speedrun community, well done completing this game!
Tip: The BFG is 1000x effective when you are super close to the enemy
I love this game, but admittedly it’s not great to play on the original hardware. The remastered version of it on Switch is probably my favorite Doom game.
Need a PC for it, but the "brutal" mod for DOOM 64 is pretty great as well
Honestly... without knowing the mechanics of the Mother Demon and especially how the BFG works, that boss is some brutal design... So I feel that pain.
Just chilling listing to video games and then he drops that copper sulfate lore.
The most impressive thing about these videos is the patience on display.
Omg monster truck madness was a childhood staple. The 4 player modes had the most jacked up physics. The single player mode..youll have fun lol
“I’ve heard of stopping to smell the roses but THIS IS REEEEDICULOUS!”
“This could be an Olympic event….in the year 2000!”
My man still keeping steady on his mission. Respect. Also I played a lot of Doom 64. The sound design was eerie.
When I was a kid it was shocking how, yes visually dark, but by the end straight up metaphysically dark.
lol the 69 dudes reference XD
Also the "New big boss enemy" is my favorite video game character
Its crazy to think that if he got the 3 secret items, he would have beat the final boss in probably less than 5 minutes
For the pillar room with the camera: you're supposed to look at the camera before lowering any pillars. This will show you which pillar to lower to get the item, since you only get one shot at it.
My favorite part of Doom is when it turns out John was the demons. And then John was a zombie.
The part with the ceiling crushing you, there’s squares of light flickering. You stand in those in between the dropping tiles.
What a series this has been blessed to see it all unfold
Fun fact, the super shotgun is actually about as strong as 3 shotgun shots, not 2. Its so good.
What a gamer.
Awesome video as usual!
I have to wonder how "64" being added to a title became synonymous with "port."
It certainly wasn't Nintendo's doing.
This at least is not a port. It has completely original levels, which were not in any other version of Doom.
@@MrBunt I am aware. I am more asking how that stigma got started. Along the lines of, "Why did people think Doom 64 was a port of Doom?"
@@ngeno That's such a good question as even I thought the same but would never see the Mario games as ports.
Why did humans make two names for something so similar, instead of a generalized term for half goat half human?
@@pianoman7753 fun fact, you can mess with your local d&d nerd by telling them that centaurs are actually insects because they have 6 limbs.
@@pianoman7753 centaur is half horse, not goat.
wait till this guy finds out about werewolfs and Humanatees
Shut up, nerd
That's funny! I thought I played this too! I guess that was just DOOM for the N64? Idk... It was Doom original. Great video, like always!
DOOM was never on the N64.
@@tacticalteamkilling6539 My bad, must have been the SNES. It's been awhile, I got it for Christmas when it came out. Red cartridge I think.
@@Nothingmuch1039 Yep, DOOM got a red cart for the SNES. Childhood memory unlocked lol
@6:50 that blue key card the crushing ceiling is hollow and will not crush you if you just stand in the middle of it
This whole series is a W. I just enjoy watching all these different and random n64 games knowing the console has a good amount of variety.
I find it funny how you are in the this Demon Realm, yet they have casual fire exit signs lol
It's wild how it's so difficult to hit and avoid the Cyberdemon in this yet on the PC you can take on 50 of them at the same time.
I used to have a stereo hooked up to tv and would turn up the volume the soundtrack fits the game perfectly its subtle but creepy
I'm still hoping for Jet Force Gemini
I believe he’s already played it, just hasn’t made a video yet. There is about a 1-1.5 year delay between when he plays a game to when he uploads the video. He’s about 3/4 of the way through the N64 library with ~100 to go
My Dad cannot play any video games starting with this era. He blames the shift to 3D, yet out of me and my 3 brothers, we had to have him beat DOOM for us, and he made it look easy.
Well the simple explanation for that is that DOOM is not a 3d game.
@@tacticalteamkilling6539 obviously lol I think he just got too busy raising us kids and had more fun getting to see us play as gaming evolved. He would always buy us horror games because those were his favorite to watch.
Most under rated channel on TH-cam love these videos
26:44 Damn, if only let the game idle a little bit when you died. The game wouldve still registered you beating the level and it wouldve looked pretty epic to have died keeping the demons in hell.
And if youre wondering what happens if that does occur, youll start the next level (unless its the last level) but youll start like you do when you choose to just restart without loading.
And also im glad im not the only person who thought about the font on Final Outpost.
I was really looking forward to this. DOOM is my all time favorite. Wish you played Hectic and the fun levels
Just like Shadow Man, Doom 64 is a game best enjoyed not on retro hardware, but rather, the remasters made by Nightdive Studios, both games had quicksaves added which makes playing them far less frustrating and more enjoyable.
I played and beat Shadow Man at around 14-15 iirc and thought it was top tier at the time!
Another great video! I definitely recommend that people play it using an emulator with save states. Not being able to save mid level made me quit it as a kid.
Ayy a new video, glad to see it. Now do goldeneye plz👍
20:19 Thab, they don’t teleport, classic Doom really REALLY likes hidden doors
Doom 64 adds scripting so monsters can and do in fact sometimes just spawn in, including right behind you.
I'm so excited for you to play Sin and Punishment eventually
He played it and reviewed it 🙂
@@caflagel thank you!
@@KidGold17 Sure thing 😊
Soon we're gonna have a randomized marble race to decide which marble track we run.
If you play in the dark (the only way to play Doom) it's way easier to see
Literally couldn't see the issue 😅
I think all the test tvs were cheap crts that had broken gamma settings
Brightnes at max both in the game and the TV's settings is the only way to play this
