The very few dual Zanpakutō we see in Bleach are also some of the series' coolest swords - which is your favourite? How do you feel about the explanation behind the existence of each one? Let me know your thoughts!
its scary to think about only 1 of his spirits wich is white had enough power to stomp Ulq and Imagine Both of them Ichigo 100% has some hax abbility like Altering the Future or Fate
I honestly expected more of a showing from Ukitake then Shinsui to be very honest, it was a shame we never got to see much of his weapons besides being able to reflect energy attacks.
Renji's zanpaktou zabimaru looks more of a dual zanpaktou than kazeshini and if kazeshini is counted what about tachikaze of Kensei Muguruma. There are other characters whose zanpaktou split to more pieces. While Renji's shikai and materialized zanpaktou form act as one body they show two separate minds and his bankai actually can be half called with "hihiou" similarly and I think it could also be unleashed as only ''orochi''.
Shunsui created a split personality so that he remains loyal to the soul society and his family/brother/sister in law, considering hiding the blade is treason of a sort.

It’s interesting how Shunsui and Ukitake both had things that kept them from reaching their full potential. Ukitake was always sick and Shunsui was too busy chasing booty to train hard. It’s pretty relatable to the average person tbh.
I disagree, Kyouraku appears frivolous, a womanizer, he’s clearly nicer to girls but ya can’t discount he is #1 choice for replacement shinigami as Capt of 13 Gotei since Yamaji passed. Like he says to his Bankai, he ought to visit more so he slacks off Bankai training & hadn’t attuned to zanpakuto in Bankai like Ichigo had to do before he got Mugetsu. Shunsui def trained enough to carry on for Yamaji as #1 Captain so I bet it’s more his carefree demeanor. Yamaji praised Shunsui’s distance of shadow steps (?) b4 fight in soul society arc.
I honestly have the headcanon that Kyouraku was so affected by Ukitake’s illness and the trauma around what happened with his brother and sister-in-law (I believe his Bankai’s story is historically accurate AND incredibly personal) that he basically tries to shirk any sense of real responsibility until Yama’s death. In some ways I wonder how pissed Byakuya would’ve been at being passed up, as I think he oftentimes imagines himself as the standard bearer for the Gotei 13 (at least in the first few arcs)
@@alaudbrother Byakuya always comes across as someone who deeply respected his senior captains and likely knew that Kyouraku was far better suited to succeed Yamamoto than himself.
I think part of the explanation for why Kazeshini is not a dual zanpakuto is that its Shikai has no true hilt. Katen Kyototsu and Sogyo no Kotowari have full hilts on each blade. This is also true for Ichigo's two Zangetsus, they both have a full hilt, they just look a lil funky cause its Ichigo lol. I'm actually totally on board with Sogyo no Kotowari being two spirits because of Mimihagi's presence, yet not having any traits of Mimihagi himself. After all, Mimihagi is the arm of Stasis, not Evolution; he wasn't trying to make Ukitake better or stronger, just delay the inevitable. I'm not sure I can explain it, but it makes sense to me.
Not to mention, it's kind of a reference to the Gemini, or at least it feels like one. Additionally, Narita spells out that Kazeshini's true weapon is the chain, not the scythes.
@@The_Aleph_Null Yeah. But that feels weird. Cause its like... then what are the blades? They're clearly part of the Shikai, but not the focus of Kazeshini's real power. That works with the blades having no hilt; they're not the focus of power, just something to attack with.
@wanderingshade8383 something I just thought about in this video is the two scythes could just be elongated chain links. These links have blades, but that's it.
I think the logic behind Kyoraku making 2 zanpaktou is similar to how Stark/Kenpachi were able to split their soul/sword into 2 beings. I think that is why the junxtaposition of Stark vs Kyoraku plays into each other. When Kyoraku uses his Bankai, its not like they are still two separate spirits, so his Bankai works similar to Stark's ressureccion, allowing Ohana to "absorb" Okyo to bring him back to his full strength. At least that has always been my head canon.
this is my theory, the smalls face is one the left eye and a void for the face while that main is missing the left eye. She split off some of herself to create the smaller one
I think there's some support to the idea that Bankai and shikai exist superpositioned on top of each other-- that they aren't intrinsically tied to one being--because of how the bankai stealing medallions appear to work. In other words, everyone's Zanpakuto is two parts, but exceptions come around where one of those parts becomes different looking so as to differentiate them. Otherwise they'd be indistinguishable. Remember how Zangetsu looked different in bankai form in Ichigo's inner world? That type of thing. Anyway, I yapped all of that to say I agree.
But then again we can say this for Ichigo too. One of the spirits might absorb the other and become one fully powered hybrid. Its only natural like the colour of the eyes or our hair in most of the cases we get one dominant.
''All Waves Rise, and Become my Shield, Lightning, Strike now, and Become my Blade". This is one of those Bankai that I really wish we saw because that sounds like Ukitake can call upon the power of the ocean and the power of thunder simultaneously. My imagination is picturing a man who fights with the equivalent of Kakashi Hatake's chidori and Zabuza's water prison.
Ukitake's Sogyo No Kotowari translates to twin-fish-law, which clearly has a water motif. Interestingly, Kaien also has a water-type zanpakuto; while Rukia has an ice-based one. It would have been amazing to see the ideas with his zanpakuto explored!
His shikai redirects and manipulated energy, and both lightning and the ocean play into that motif. I don't think they have anything directly to do with his bankai so much as really leaning into that "control of energy" idea as a bankai is always an expansion of the shikai with far greater power.
Ichigo's status as the one true duel wielder of the Soul Reapers, is fitting. His status as a hybrid, and thus the only one to obtain such a unique weapon, is a cool thematic element of the story.
Shunsui's is perfect for his status as Captain Commander even if they've been with him virtually his entire life. Also honestly liked the lighthearted comedy that involved both Spirits manifesting even if it's filler.
Very cool, but it also serves it's ability with the shape and duality. Or maybe he was left handed without shikai and Mimihagi influence added one for right hand as well
@@nicolaemihai3581 He's had mimihagi since he was a child, it wouldn't be surprising if the lifelong influence affected the asauchi to an extreme degree. I just hope any future hell arc content could shed more light
Considering that Mimihagi's whole schtick is preventing change, it makes sense that its influence would create a Zanpakuto that is exactly the same as Ukitaki's.
@@gammafrostalso in my option he is the only true twin zanpakto user. Ichigo had his Quincy powers ( which Mayby even died with ywach), shunsuis is cuz he had a child with his zanpakto which is just it splitting a part of itself kinda like kenpachis and for the twinsycthes it’s in reality the chain that’s the zanpakto not the dual blades. Only ukitake has true twin fish.
My headcanon is that Mimihagi is the stagnation power of Ukitake's shikai. Its power absorbs the power of others while Ukitake's power allows him to redistribute that stagnated power
I’ve been thinking lately about ichigo’s false shikai and it being „constantly in shikai form” and it actually might be the only zanpakuto to ever do that. While most zanpakutos relied on asauchis to manifest their shikai, ichigo just straight up materialized it using his powers, so he didn’t even have an asauchi form to go back to in the first place. I wonder though if that’s related in any way to how the zero division’s swords were formed (before oetsu nimaya created asauchis)
Also to add to your point they've been upgraded 💺 with a little extra reisha not to mention the Soul-King 👑 added power that definitely had affect on their blade's ⚔️🗡️🗡️⚔️
I think it's a Reiatsu thing. Stark and Granz both manifested a second being due to being so unbelievably powerful. Maybe Ukitake and Kyoraku are the same
I think Shunsui was able to have Katen make a second sword/spirit because of their...close relationship. I imagine most other shinigami cannot do this, unless their relationship with their blade was as intimate.
Some thoughts: Ichigo indicated that he was the only one with 2 Bankais - a Hollow and a Quincy one. Or at least he hadn't yet figured out how to properly merge the two powers while in Bankai? Kazeshini is like Hozikumaru's 3-part-staff function. Both are just a single weapon with a single spirit, but a weapon that intrinsically is multiple connected part. If you cut the connecting chains, they would be largely useless as Shikais. Zabimaru meanwhile is canonically two personalities, but seemingly only one spirit and one weapon. A interesting part of the sword rebellion: - Zabimarus parts were connected by a chain, similar to how their canonical parts are one body - Sōgyo no Kotowari seemingly had to hold hands for their powers to work. And they were twins, probably the least diversified spirits. - Katen Kyōkotsu had 2 fully independent spirits Sōgyo no Kotowari is similar to all 3. It is a single connected weapon, where cutting the chain would break the power. A single sealed sword. And while it seems to have 2 manifested spirits, they are twins - so their difference is even less then with Zabimarus dual personality. I would guess the spirit having 2 bodies in a non-canon source is just a oddity. It seems to still be one spirit.
Would be cool if a character had a duel zankpakto because when their loved one died, it's sword refused to leave its partners lover or relative. Instead manifesting its power for the still alive partner in order to always stay close by.
There already is one. Tosen is a very unique case. He took the zanpakuto of his late beatfriend as his own and gave its reiatsu to the blade. If you do this two either two things can happen. 1. The users overflowing reiatsu completely overpowers the former zanpakuto spirit and is thereby there's now (Kenpachi) or 2. The users reiatsu fuses with the previous owners creating a dual release zanpakuto(my fanon name for it). It's the reason why tosen has two release commands and in cfyow it was revealed that the one that creates a bunch of blades was tosen's best friend who was tsunayashiro's wife that he killed. He might have even had two bankais if he didn't stray from his path.
He has two spirits, but they're both the same entity. His zanpakuto spirit is shown to be an ape with a snake for a tail early in the series, before the zanpakuto rebellion arc.
One thing about the Zanpakuto that I would absolutely LOVE to see explained more either in the anime, hell arc, or Klub Outside is how and why Ichigo's and Aizen's hands fused to their zanpakuto. Aizen speculated it is the zanpakuto in its "truest" form, but then why don't any other characters, icluding Ichibei and Oetsu, have this form. And why did Ichigo lose it, even after obtaining his "true" zanpakuto?
@@MrGksarathyI think there is a factor for a Shinigami life force Unohana and Yamamoto should be the same age yet Unohana is still looking fresh even when she was in the first gotei 13 while Yamamoto old like cheese. My theory is that each souls have different lifespan and can be effected by war (Unohana enjoys killing while Yamamoto does not). I also find out that souls do have lifespan after reading CFYOW by looking at Enkaryōten that take the lifespan of Tsunayashiro
@@TheMentallyTired I have a similar theory, I think a soul's physical appearance can worsen if they're constantly under stress (either by having to constantly use Reiatsu, or having to constantly be in battle, or just having a lot of responsibilities) would explain why Yamamoto aged so much that or its just Kubo saying 'fck it, my manga, Imma draw them like I want' but that answer is *boring af* so I'm gonna keep making theories
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 2 captains also had 2 sealed zanpakuto, whereas Hisagi only had the one that split into 2. I feel like that distinction is an important one when determing dual zanpakuto or not
I loved the dual zapakutō as a concept. That they signified something different, unique, and stronger about Kyōraku and Ukitake. I also love the anime clip of Kyokatsu basically being Kyōraku's nagging wife and Ukitake having to appease his zapakutō as what felt like a single dad. I love the look of Zangetsu. That twist of Old Man Zangetsu being his Quincy powers still resonates with me and I remember everyone's reaction on fan sites. And I love the image of Ichigo standing there with both Zanpakutōs. I just wanted Kubo to do more with it. I wish we got to see more of the true Bankai. And maybe Ichigo's hollow mask had evolved past what we saw with the Horn of Salvation. It feels like there are holes in Ichigo's powerset. Can he use a Quincy's bow? I also always imagined the form it takes when regular katana(s) and the big one would be an ōdachi or a nodachi and then the little one would be a wakizashi.
@@alivetoadstool1289 yes, its funny cuz Ichigo is bagless despite having the biggest bag in bleach, Getsuga Tensho is basically just a "shinigamified" (I just made up that word lol) version of a Cero, no? Everyone got a unique ability, and then there is Ichigo, whose unique trait is able to do anything a hollow, arrancar or quincy can do, but bro only uses the same 5 moves, two of which do the same thing (Sonido and Shunpo), and one that used once (Blut Vene), not to mention bro's still a shinigami by nature, he could learn Kido, he's literally everything Aizen wished he could be
I never considered Hisagi to have a dual zanpakuto since I felt like we'd have to consider Ikkaku if we did. Besides Hōzukimaru having two parts also connected by a chain in shikai, his Bankai consists of three totally different blades connected by chains.
Personally, I dont think that Kazashini counts as a duel weapon. Yes, there are two pointy bits, but a kusarigama is not two weapons, it is one weapon in the same way that a halberd with a spike on the end isnt two weapons. I'm actually somewhat leery of considering Sogo no Katawari a duel Zanpakuto as well for the same reason. I actually created a Zanpakuto for a story I never finished that was going to manifest in Shikai as a pair of swords, specifically a set of butterfly swords, which are usually wielded as a pair. The idea was that it was a single weapon in two parts.
In CFYOW Kazeshini is explained to be the chain, not the sickles. This checks out, with Hisagi only having the one Zanpakuto spirit. Until Hisagi has a bankai reveal in the anime I'm inclined to take it as fact though putting too much stock into a light novel doesn't exactly feel great. Sogyo on the other hand... The connective ritual rope isn't the focus, the blades themselves are. Given the organic (no pun intended) linking of Mimihagi in Ukitake, you can think of the rope like an umbilical cord almost. Not to speculate too much, but I think what we're supposed to take away from Ukitake's case (especially his Zanpakuto coming out of Hell) is that the ability would still be the blade absorbing and reflecting attacks, but having the second sword gives him the extra room for redirecting the timing. That's not grounded in much, his Zanpakuto fresh out of hell also had the talisman rope, so maybe we're just supposed to assume it was a copy+paste from the presence of Mimihagi acting as an independent soul aligned entirely with Ukitake, thereby doubling* his soul. *For lack of a better term.
@MrTommo2304 Yachiru is, I Believe, proof of the possibility of a zanpakuto splitting. It was done accidentally but she was cut from the main zanpakuto, a more skilled shinigami could, in theory, do it in purpose
Kazeshini is obviously an overgrown version of Japanese chain weapons, most famously the kusarigama. And in that vein, I think the explanation of the chain being the core is more understandable. These sorts of weapons are always double ended, if often with two different whacking bits. A kusarigama isn't a flail and sickle dual wielded, it's a kusarigama. Hōzukimaru isn't a triple zanpakuto made of two staves and a spear, just because the sections are connected by chain right? No one looks at Tsunzakigarasu or Senbonzakura and tries to say they're dozens of zanpakuto. I really think this confusion comes solely from the fact that Sōgyo no Kotowari are connected by a rope. I'm certain that if it was a separate rope with seals hanging from each sword, 99% of the Bleach community would already have moved on from the idea.
I think that they fact that Kyoraku was able to manipulate the nature of his zanpakutou to that level shows why Yamaji considered him one of his finest students. It was never stated upfront... but when you look that many of the strongest characters in Bleach had the capacity to manipulate their blades from outside of their awakened states, and no other character that hadn't achieve an equal or approximate level could do that... it get pretty clear that such subtle thing is in actuality a showing of deep understanding of their power. Changing form, keeping them, altering interpretations... those are the true hallmarks of a powerful shinigami.
People sleep on Bleach's writing all the time, but you are incredibly correct. Seldomly was being captain related to being powerful in the common sense of the word. Shunsui was one of 3 only characters we see split their soul, but is the only one to remain the same person while doing so. Ukitake might have been blessed, but his achievements are absolutely astounding for someone as chronically ill as him. Toshiro is Ichigo levels of genius, speedrunning a Bankai even though he dealt with major maturity issues. Zaraki is the only one given the title by power alone, but the more we know about him, the more we know him as an anomaly. He's literally larger than life, the biggest pool of non-artificially enhanced reiatsu, though he lacked finesse he split his soul into another full fledged Shinigami. Mayuri is technically extremely weak, but incredibly intelligent and resourceful. Komamura is literally the only one of his kind that we are aware of that even managed to get to that level of humanity. Tosen pretty much willed himself into being a Shinigami out of spite, when he was a peaceful person that didn't show a knack to be a shinigami until then. Aizen was literally the only person to pursue bluring the lines of how life works in this universe. Byakuya is steadfast and the most loyal person ever, to an unwavering degree, which makes his powers almost a constant in a world were the power system fluctuates constantly. All of their personalities and goals mattered more than battle prowess for the most part, because that develops the soul more.
@@jpcsdutra So much yes to what you said. Bleach has flaws, i am too old to overlook them now, but even with those flaws it has some of the best subtle construction of character and world that very few come close to having. One of the things i always loved, even when i was too much of a brat to fully appreciate it, was that every captain had a ideology/philosophy of life, one that they shared with the vice-captains, and even when you disagreed with them... they weren't really wrong, those were their truths, the morals that molded them in who they were. Tosen and Shuhei are a good example of that, how Tosen shared his beliefs with Shuhei when he was still sincere about them and how in the end those ideas s payed of in his death, Tosen's death was a heavy moment because i understood what he lost by being to consumed with vengeance and what still was left in the world by his better part.
One small note. Kazeshini in shikai is best described as a kusari-fundo. Which is two sickle/blades joined by a length of rope or chain. A kusari-gama is a sickle/scythe with a weight on a chain.
How old is Nanao? We see her as a kid 100 years ago right before the Visored incident. But if she was a kid while Shunsui was still in the academy (going of his clothes when her mom gave him the sword) that would mean she was still a child for hundreds of years and then started to age in the last 100 years. Something is of here.
Dual Zanpakuto likely form because the Asauchi reflects the wielder's heart & inner world. Being able to merge perfectly isn't common, so while Ichigo's the only one with a "natural" Dual Zanpakuto, it doesn't reduce the other two's standing. Katen Kyokutsu's powers focus on games and plays - on fiction turning into reality. That's likely the means by which he split Kyokotsu off of Katen. The idea that she's specifically the part of Katen in charge of Kageoni is interesting - possibly allowing him to split her further into each individiual game/move, though that's hardly useful. If he could, and could make additional Zanpakuto through that method, he still only has two hands to wield them with. Conversely, if his Dual Wielding has more to do with the presence of Shinken Hakkyoken in his soul then the sub-spirit hiding it, he might revert to a single blade after the time skip (unless Ise gets him to hide it again). Ukitake's need to awaken Mimihagi via ritual suggests he was dormant until that point. Considering how Mimihagi initially appears via Ukitake's shadow, it's quite possible the Right Arm of the Soul King generally took on a form that mirrored his host. It's possible the Bankai version of the spirit was a singular figure with the Mimihagi portion taking on the role of the main body's shadow. Mimihagi's power is that of preservation and stagnation, tasked with keeping Ukitake alive & whole. Between that, his presumed dormant nature, and the fact that they were bonded for a long time, it's possible that elements from both potential blades (Ukitake alone + Mimihagi alone) were incorporated into each blade. I'm still hoping we get a Bankai reveal as part of his big Mimihagi reveal. Like all Soul King stuff there's a lot up in the air, but with any luck there'll be more Ukitake stuff in the TYBW or a Hell arc. As for Shuhei & Kazeshini, CFYOW uses a pinwheel or windmill to represent the cycle of life and death (haven't read it myself, just heard that second-hand, so I might be off-base) - which would have 4 arms typically. It could be as simple as the blades being the arms separated (which might be said outright in CFYOW, not sure).
I think in order to hide the Ise zanpakuto Kyoraku's single sprit "Katen Kyokotsu" Split into Katen and Kyokotsu, and the domaining traits remain present in Ohana, giving none of them has a complete face, but showcases the fraction the other covers, in that case Ohana split from herself the part who enjoy playing Hide and Seek, in order to hide the Ise zanpakuto.
Well, it's interesting consider the factors that could have influenced them to create dual zanpakutos, meaning it's not something that happens naturally, but at the same time, those guys were something else. Anyway, without starting listing all the foreshadowing or insipirations of Kubo from the Zanpakuto Rebellion, yes, even in that filler arc was Kyokotsu the one who used Kageoni, during the little fight with Kyoraku in the cave, and another wink surely was the episode where Nanao tried to make friends with Kyokotsu. Love it! Sorry if I go a bit off-topic, but now that you mention it, is that a little mistake? The age of Nanao. I mean, she was a kid when her mother passed down the sword to Shunsui, which technically was a lot of time ago, in fact in the flashback he was very young (chapter 652), not a captain already. Kyoraku has been a captain for several hundred years, if we count SAFWY, at very least for more than 250 years. What I'm saying is that Nanao, from the part with her mother to TBTP (at least 150+ years) had a really slow growth, as she was still a kid even 100 years ago, while many other characters have grown fully in less than a century of time. But these are fussy details, I know.
I'm curious, why did you not discuss Renji? Taking into account the filler arc (same as you did here) and the cannon, Renji is the only person who has had "two to four" spirits combined into one and has had 2 different bankai just like Ichigo. It's a stretch but in the soul society invasion arc, Renji manifested his spirit as the hybrid or fused baboon/serpent spirit that both ends could act independently as they were two separate beings fused into one body. During the filler arc, his zanpakuto was instead manifested as 2 different people completely but tied together with an unbreakable chain (notably, they both used the SAME single sword, they didn't each have their own). Depending on which one you use, Renji has 2-4 different spirits that combine to 1 zanpakuto seemingly permanently vs Ichigo who's 2 spirits only combine during bankai. I wonder, if Renji chose it, could he use his two spirits separately like the Ichigo does?
Zangetsu is naturally occuring Dual-Zanpakutou. It just didn't occur naturally in a pure-blooded Shinigami. And it'd be interesting if Sword & Sheath is how Dual-Zanpakutou would manifest. There's only the one Asauchi. Would also love to see a either a Sealed version of 'True' Zangetsu, or see the Old Man's Blade take a more Sheath-functional Shape. (perhaps like Blake's sharpened sheath from RWBY?)
i think all 3 of them can be considered Akimbo Zanpakuto. when Old Man Yamamoto said that there were only 2, he wasn't lying. he probably just doesn't consider Kazeshini to be a dual Zanpakuto. which is fair, i think. after all, each blade of Sogyo no Kotowari has a different function. one absorbs projectiles, the other fires them back. and they're both proper katana. whereas historically, Kama (or sickles) were never considered weapons. it is only upon linking one with a weight via a chain that it becomes a weapon. the Kusarigama. or in this case another Kama. therefore, there is only one weapon. it's just wielded with both hands. maybe you think that's a loophole, to each their own. Captain Yamamoto also didn't lie, even if you consider Ichigo. because, well, his Zanpakuto wasn't even dual bladed by that point. i also find it weird that you think Kubo is trying to erase the existence of the "constant release Zanpakuto". i mean, is that not the case for Ichigo?
He says that Kubo is trying to erase constant release Shikai because Byakuya goes out of his way to say constant release Zanpakutō probably don’t exist. Mr. Tommo probably is just saying the Kubo is making a point that Ichigo, being in constant release, being a dual wielder, is something that should be noted as special, even among specials.
@@ftsvectors2164 i see. that does imply though that what we know as his current "Shikai" is actually it's base form, Sealed State. and the "Bankai" would actually be it's Shikai. which makes a lot of sense. considering it looks like his original Shikai. so maybe the anime will address this? i hope they do. it would be cool to see the return of the black Daito version of Tensa Zangetsu. it would probably need a longer or different name though. this is a bit of a meme, but they could go with something as simple as "Tensho no Getsuga Tensa Zangetsu". which, is kinda like saying the same thing twice. however, also pays homage to the Saigo no Getsuga Tensho. but, i'm sure if they do do this, they'll come up with something better
@@strider_hiryu850 Who are you talking about? Ichigo? Before the Thousand Year Blood War, he was using a false Zanpakuto with both a false Shikai and Bankai. His true Zanpakuto is similar, but also completely different.
I guarantee when we get the hell arc continuation that ichigo will finally use his release command for the first time to split his standard zanpakutou into the dual one we see in the TYBW.
11:38 it's implied that Shunsui in fact *DID* sleep with his blade. The extra sword would technically be his daughter, by the time he got Shikai it manifested this way. If he and his Zanpakuto had another child, it'd be 3 blades. It adds weight to Katen saying relationships between Zanpakuto and Shinigami are incompatible in one translation.
I've always thought Katen Kyokotsu was something similar to Starrk and Lilynette, a being who split its soul into two. Starrk doing it to scape loneliness, for himself, in a selfish, egoistic manner, and Shunsui doing it to help someone else, like the other side of the coin. To me, Katen Kyokotsu feels more like two already existing parts of Shunsui's soul, but split apart after a time of need
Katen Kyokatsu's design was among my favorites from the Zanpaktou filler. There are very few I didn't like and I'm glad they kept it as the canon design.
5:30 NOW THAT would be a very good night together 😂 Fr tho, 6:10 I thought that the spirits were different to accentuate the fact that Kyōraku actually uses 2 different katana types and that his zanpakuto is akin to a childish game. I like that he somehow made another spirit. And am interested in the process of how he did.
I always believed that Kyokotsu is Shunsui shikai, who likes playing childrens games. And Katen is his Bankai, bringing a play about a married couple to life. Maybe it was one sword at the beginning, but split into two. One is a lighthearted and playful child and the other a mature woman whos flirtatious and more serious. Both are sides of Shunsui and were inherited by his sword, but they got split up and each got one half of his personality. Both are his swords and have thier own powers, making him the only true dual weilder until Ichigo, whos sword also has different powers though in a different way. Shunsui suggested that his swords have a mind of their own, sometimes forcing a game on him that he doesn't want. His relationship with his zanpakuto is different from most aside from Ichigo, who's sword spirit (one of them) tries to challenge him and take over. Unfortunately we don't know Ukitakes bankai and how different (if any) it is from his shikai. But his sword spirits seemed really similar in personality, beside being twins. While Shunsui spirits look and act differently.
It makes sense that Sogyo no Kotowari has that form, since Ukitake is the vessel for Mimihage. The rope and talismans of the shikai could be inspired by shimenawa, marking him as the dwelling/host of a sacred being. The zanpakutou spirits are the priests of Mimihagi's temple, which is Ukitake's inner world.
Kensei also has a dual zanpakuto in bankai! It is also one of the few Zanpakuto that truly condensed its power through its stages, becoming smaller and more explosive each time.
Regarding Kazeshini and Sogyo no Katawari: Kazeshini's true essence lies in the chain rather than the blade, and I feel the same could be said of Sogyo no Kawatari, since both blades are connected by a rope with charms strung along it, and like Hisagi's chains protecting his life, Ukitake's conduit also control the velocity, strength and pressure of a returned energy blast.
I just realized, Sōgyo no Kotowari... works kind of like lungs do. You can "breath" in an attack, and "breath out" to shoot it out, but it doesn't come out the same, just like the air in your lungs doesn't either (as it is partially consumed and replaced with other components, and our diaphragm can alter the force it goes out with). And there are 2... identical... lungs. So what if because Ukitake partially merged with Mimihage, it meant his powers and his soul were now imbalanced towards his lungs which are now full of a foreign power. This shift and the 2 distinct powers demand to be separate just like all the others, but because he didn't have an asauchi when he got them, they mixed and melded into each other as he unlocked Shikai, emulating his lungs. Kyoraku on the other hand is interesting, because he somehow stole Nanao's zanpaktou. "Ill return her to you then, your zanpaktou Kyoukotsu.... There's a slight error in that as well. Regardless, ohana made okyou in order to hide your zanpaktou" Ohana being Katen and Okyou being Kyokotsu. Your zanpaktou being unclear if its refering to her actual zanpaktou or the divine sword which is technically her zanpaktou. Nanao also tried to awaken her own zanpaktou, but the asauchi never transformed. So, if we go by all that information, it seems that Kyoraku and Nanao's mother worked together to steal Nanao's zanpakou while she was extremely young, creating Kyokotsu, for the express purpose of later using that merged half one half the other zanpaktou to hide the divine sword, and since Ise clan members don't/can't form their own zanpaktou, it wouldn't be suspicious. Nanao's mother probably didn't fully reveal this plan until she pushed the sword onto him. Though it could be that the time is just not properly represented, as it seems to me that Him taking Nanao's defunct half active asauchi and completing it is the best expanation, and Then afterwards despite being in posession of the divine sword for a while, finally giving it to Okyou to hide long term. This also explains why he has 2 swords when not in shikai, he would literally have 2 asauchi for 2 different zanpaktou.
Regarding Ukitake's zanpakuto, my thought is due to him being melded with that other soul for so long, even though it's a separate entity, it's been such a long time that it IS part of him. So, to me, that explains why the spirit of his zanpakuto are twins, he is 2 but 1; You need both carbon and steel together to make steel, but in the end they are 2 separate elements forged into 1 substance. (Yeah, bad example/explanation, but I think it gets my point across.) That is distinct and different from Ichigo's case, since Ukitake's situation was unnatural and happened AFTER he was born, whereas with Ichigo, it was always there from the time he was conceived, so the various parts are fully 100% a part of him; Ichigo is more like the protons, neutrons, and electrons that make up an element.
I wouldn't say Ukitate has a true dual zanpaktou. His is like Hisagi's whereas the main properties and abilities come from its rope and tags, the swords are just an entry and exit point for said ability and due to the ability it makes sense to use two swords connected together.
Kazheshini is not a dual blade zanpaktou because its true body is the chains not the blade itself. That is why when it becomes a bankai, the chain manifests as its main effect
I do like the sword/sheathe metaphor with Old Man Zangetsu being the sheathe because it means Ichigo was beating everybody with the sheathe of his sword up until Zangetsu is reforged
The scythe type is technically one zanpakutō since they are connected by a chain, meant to be one weapon. You can think of it as a three sectioned staff. It’s one weapon connected by chains. The two that are pairs aren’t connected to be one weapon. The one connected by a sash is similar but weapons connected by cloth are considered separate weapons.
Ukitake's Sogyo to me felt as if he was born the only survivor of a twin birth at witch the right arm had taken over the place of the dead twin. Since he would of absorbed him in the womb, his powers manifested in the form of his twin. Being taken over by the right arm only to be a placeholder for the twin. Actively changing the dynamic to a parasite being the right arm and keeping him sickly throughout the series.
21:20 I'm not sure we necessarily know which of the 2 base swords of Kyoraku's Zanpakuto correspond to which spirit, do we? Can we say with certainty that Katen is the katana and Kyokotsu the wakizashi and not the other way around? Sure, it is the natural assumption what with the spirits' respective sizes, and tradition would certainly seem to suggest it -- my understanding of the two kinds of sword in our real world is that katanas are used without wakizashis far more frequently than wakizashis without katanas -- but... can we really say for sure which is which?
Personally I believe that the reason why Ukitake had 2 swords that look the same and not one more Mimihagi-esque one, is the nature of the pact that both have. Mimihagi basically became part of Ukitake, likely going dormant until the time came and it needed to act. This likely means that Ukitake was ''in charge'' of this conjoined existence. But also Mimihagi is a being of statis. It controls the concept of status quo. Its on its nature to not change things, and just mimicking Ukitake's existing power ( likely a single Sōgyo no Kotowari) instead of granting him a different power or overwriting it is exactly what its nature as the ''order'' hand of the Soul King would be.
I think it's very fitting that there's really no such thing as a duo-Zanpakutou for a Shinigami, your soul makes 1 Spirit and that's it. Hisagi is kind of like Rose, just like how Rose's Bankai doesn't actually make fire or water but sound, Hisagi isn't the blades, but the chain. Kyoraku manufactured his Zanpakutou, basically a not-horrible version of what Mayuri did to his own. Ukitake I imagine the Mimihagi copied his soul and kept it in "stasis" as that's it's whole thing, stillness. And Spirits don't change shape so there's just 2 of them now. And Ichigo's duo of Spirits aren't a duo of Shinigami Spirits, one is a Quincy.
The reason Hisagi’s zampaktuo isn’t a duel one is because he only has one sealed sword, while Ukitake and Kyoraku both have two swords each in their sealed state.
@@truthspreader1996 I might be mistaken, but when you see Ukitake after he and Shunsui have released Shikai against Yamamoto, I’m almost certain he has what looks to be two empty white scabbards in his “belt”, but it could also be something else for all I know.
@@eivinkringen4725 I do believe you are mistaken. I rewatch the scene and could not found what you were talking about and no information mention a "two empty white scabbards in his “belt”".
If i had to head canon an answer as to why mimihagi might impact SnK as a second blade it would be kinda two things. We learn that hisagis bankai and shikai are the chain and how it/they are used. Well mimihagi might be the reason why jushiros shikai can manipulate and control energy attacks like it does. If we imagine a SnK without mimihagis influence it could be absorbing an energy attack to make the blade stronger and it can be discharged in the same way that it was absorbed. However mimihagi governs stagnation. Meaning it must change things that are happening to stop happening. While this might seem more like the adaptation of pernida, its just the functional usage of reaching stagnation that is the influence of mimihagi. Like to keep something in stagnation you must control the parts of it that could change and stop them from doing so. So with minihagis influence SnK becomes a sword that not only absorbs and sends back an attack but gets the ability to change the properties of the attack as a by product. Also i think we learn from kubo in club outside that ppl that have achieved bankai can change the form of their weapons. I would assume that is more so what takes place what katen kyokotsu. In that head a well developed sword but in desiring a way to help that situation manifested a second blade. And his nature as someone who is kinda lazy but recognizes when a job needs to get done sorta fits this. Big part of him is lazy but a significant portion of him is swift to act
I want to make two point: 1.- Shunsui and Ukitakes blades have composed names Katen/Kyokotsu Sogyou/Kotowari while Zangetsu only has one name. 2.- If Constant Shikai isnt a thing, then what is Zangetsu dual form? His base? If so, he has mastered his powers at the level to jump from base to Bankai? And maybe his "Old Zangetsu" was indeed, is shikai the whole time.
The ongoing discourse on zanpakuto spirit roles really makes me want Ikkaku to get some spotlight in the future. I find it bizarre that it’s not been explained why his shikai solely involves the use of his sheath. Ichigo’s development seems to suggest sheath usage in a zanpakuto is indicative of unique soul properties and history. I’d love for ikkakus sheathe to critical to augmenting and transforming his bankai if it truly can’t be repaired to the same form.
I can see Mimihage making a twin for Ukitake's original sword spirit because Mimihage is against change the way Pernida is for it. He was moved to make a change in Ukitake but only the minimum he could get away with.
*This does raise more questions....* According to Kubo, if Ichigo so desired, he could separate the sheath from the blade and return to the dual swords if he wanted... so basically both the old form and the new form of Ichigo's Shikai are both Ichigo's Shikai and he chooses to use the old form.
I love how there’s a certain requirement to reach dual Zanpakuto. Shunsui’s splitting to contain and hide a sacred Zanpakuto, the existence of Mimihagi having an effect on Jushiro’s soul, and Ichigo having a visoredized Zanpakuto and quincy spirit residing within him. They honestly make up the most unique of Zanpakuto in this regard. And Shuhei’s Zanpakuto being the chain while the blades are merely accessories makes more sense for him. He’s always had a turbulent time within the story, especially with his Zanpakuto. I wonder if we’ll ever see another dual type. Probably not all things considered
IDK I'd argue on top of the chain Hisagi's shikai manifested as a "dual wield" because of him being saved by Kensei as a kid, even to the point of getting the 69 on his face, not altering the soul but the mindset. As we have seen in Ichigo's case mindset was all it took to change his base zanpakto.
To add further on Ukitake’s swords: Sogyo No Kotowari is translated to Truth of Pisces. All of the things involving Ukitake deal with God or divine. This makes sense because of his connection to Mimihagi. The religious context of Truth is always synonymous with God. Because Truth is God. The story of Pisces is of two gods who fled and transformed into fish and tied themselves together so they would never lose each other. Sogyo No Kotowari also manifested as two young boys wearing royal ceremonial outfits like an emperor because Ukitake himself was originally supposed to die as a young boy before being saved by god (soul king’s right hand).
I mean it makes sense in a way that there are no dual blades. If your sword is the manifestation of your soul, then 1 soul leads to 1 sword. Each person who has two has had there soul split or shaped by forces beyond that base concept- and ichigo, with this in mind, has the closest to “natural” dual blades because his soul was the least negatively/unnaturally affected as he was born this way to begin with
Considering there has been hundreds of soul reapers by the time of Ichigo (99.9% of them unnamed of course) ied say a grand total of 3 (4 if we count Hisagi, I don’t as he only has a single spirit and I think a dual personality inside your inner world is needed to count) is still extremely rare. If we look at it from a time perspective it’s probably even rarer as we’re talking only 4 dual zanpakuto in millennia (we could also say from the dawn of time if we want to be really extreme) that’s pretty damn rare.
Id say thats what seperates them; kazeshini is a singular spirit when represented. Whereas both ukitake's and kyoraku's are represented as two being under one name. On another note- since I learned about the two captains and dual zanpakuto, I've ALWAYS wished ichigo got 2 blades 😅 childhood fandom dream Come true
Ikkaku dual wielding his bankia
will Ichigo ever get some sort of Bow ability?
Renji's zanpaktou zabimaru looks more of a dual zanpaktou than kazeshini and if kazeshini is counted what about tachikaze of Kensei Muguruma. There are other characters whose zanpaktou split to more pieces. While Renji's shikai and materialized zanpaktou form act as one body they show two separate minds and his bankai actually can be half called with "hihiou" similarly and I think it could also be unleashed as only ''orochi''.
Both Shunsui and Ukitake have a story of their childhood tied to their dual Zanpakuto. Making it even more unique like Ichigo’s case

Yamamoto himself said that both ukitake and kyoraku always trained hard every single day of their life. Kyoraku looks lazy, he never was.
shunsui like me fr

The very ability of Sogyo no Kotowari represents stagnation. He stops the attack and turns it back. Not allowing it to move forward
Not to mention, it's kind of a reference to the Gemini, or at least it feels like one.
Additionally, Narita spells out that Kazeshini's true weapon is the chain, not the scythes.
wasnt the explanation that kazeshini is the chain, not the blades?
In BBS, The mobile game, Ukitakes bankai utilized black fish that conducted lightning, so you’re literally not far off
The PSP heat the soul games also had Ukitake using water 💧 + lightning ⚡️
His shikai redirects and manipulated energy, and both lightning and the ocean play into that motif. I don't think they have anything directly to do with his bankai so much as really leaning into that "control of energy" idea as a bankai is always an expansion of the shikai with far greater power.
Nah, it sounds like energy flow and then lightning attack instantly. Exactly like what his shikai does.
So is the point of Ukitakes shikai is that it "breathes in and breathes out" attacks? Mimicking mimihagi being his lungs?
that's a dope point you make
if you're right, that will be some more dope Kubo foresight..

Reminded me of the Episode That Never Was (the OVA)
"I am *a blade"*
Ukitake deserved a full fight and a bankai reveal
I think Shunsui was able to have Katen make a second sword/spirit because of their...close relationship. I imagine most other shinigami cannot do this, unless their relationship with their blade was as intimate.
Shunsui: I am the bitch of my sword!
Some thoughts:
Ichigo indicated that he was the only one with 2 Bankais - a Hollow and a Quincy one.
A interesting part of the sword rebellion:
- Zabimarus parts were connected by a chain, similar to how their canonical parts are one body
- Sōgyo no Kotowari seemingly had to hold hands for their powers to work. And they were twins, probably the least diversified spirits.
- Katen Kyōkotsu had 2 fully independent spirits
Sōgyo no Kotowari is similar to all 3.
If it hadn't been filler maybe the Towing Kotowari could have been (behaved) as Ukitake & Mimihagi...
Just realised on top of ichigo having like every race and power, this man was on the very exclusive Duel blade list
Reverse Suzumushi...
I demand to see Ukitake's bankai !
This does raise an important question: what about Renji's dual spirits? Why is he the only other one to have them?
He has two spirits, but they're both the same entity. His zanpakuto spirit is shown to be an ape with a snake for a tail early in the series, before the zanpakuto rebellion arc.

And why did Ichigo lose it, even after obtaining his "true" zanpakuto?

Why are you tha best representation of a voiced avatar for which I need to further more indulge myself in bleach
Good job... Keep me informed pimp'n
@MrTommo2304 Yachiru is, I Believe, proof of the possibility of a zanpakuto splitting. It was done accidentally but she was cut from the main zanpakuto, a more skilled shinigami could, in theory, do it in purpose
Yeah, because it's actually the Shikai and Bankai splitting off to try and communicate with Zaraki.
Yamaji!?!?!?!?
The guy from Ninja Kamui?
I didn't know there was a special name for it, that's cool!
Everybody's forgetting about renji having two Spirits in his sword but only has one blade
Kyoraku achieving shikai while still in the academy is totally in character and makes perfect sense to me
Soul reaper ages is a major plot hole.
How so?
Findor vs hisagi is one of my very favorite bleach fights of all time
i love ukitake and his zanpakuto

Zabimaru... Not sure if you made a video on that one. It would be interesting to learn about the two spirits there.
Lmao that just made me laugh, could you imagine?
Ukitake: Enters his inner world for the first time “What the?”
Mimihagi: “Sup”
13:13 Ukitake being the most good looking captain beating Kuchiki Byakuya
@@gammafrost what? the whole point is that the two become one. it's like, the whole thing. this makes no sense
5:30 NOW THAT would be a very good night together 😂
Fr tho, 6:10 I thought that the spirits were different to accentuate the fact that Kyōraku actually uses 2 different katana types and that his zanpakuto is akin to a childish game.
You completely left out a Ikaku and his craziness
Regarding Kazeshini and Sogyo no Katawari: Kazeshini's true essence lies in the chain rather than the blade, and I feel the same could be said of Sogyo no Kawatari, since both blades are connected by a rope with charms strung along it, and like Hisagi's chains protecting his life, Ukitake's conduit also control the velocity, strength and pressure of a returned energy blast.
Hold up! What about Zabimaru!!! Renji always gets robbed!!!!
They should make a shinigami with a slit personality disorder who uses two very different Zanpakuto with very different spirits
(Yeah, bad example/explanation, but I think it gets my point across.)
That is distinct and different from Ichigo's case, since Ukitake's situation was unnatural and happened AFTER he was born, whereas with Ichigo, it was always there from the time he was conceived, so the various parts are fully 100% a part of him; Ichigo is more like the protons, neutrons, and electrons that make up an element.
It turned into a kid to cheer him up about being sick
Somehow..... it never landed on me that Hisagi actually has dual blades despite it being rather obvious. I feel dumb now haha.
I wouldn't say Ukitate has a true dual zanpaktou. His is like Hisagi's whereas the main properties and abilities come from its rope and tags, the swords are just an entry and exit point for said ability and due to the ability it makes sense to use two swords connected together.
😭are we ignoring the fact that every week tommo has a klub outsude reveal video?
He’s going through the backlog
Maybe Ukitake's zanpakuto is twins because he was given a second chance to live the life he would have
Kazheshini is not a dual blade zanpaktou because its true body is the chains not the blade itself. That is why when it becomes a bankai, the chain manifests as its main effect
Isn't that what he said in the video......
Aizen also has dual Zanpakutos. Kyoka Suigetsu and Hinamori.
Hold up...
Ukitake's Sōgyo no Kotowari is only a single blade that turns into two blades.
@@truthspreader1996 I’m pretty sure you can visibly see that he has two empty scabbards after activating Shikai, so maybe he only unsheathed one?

Cant wait to see and hear Shunsui releasing his bankai in the next cour. Lots of chills in the upcoming season.
I want to make two point:
1.- Shunsui and Ukitakes blades have composed names Katen/Kyokotsu Sogyou/Kotowari while Zangetsu only has one name.
Kubo has the penchant to step on his own tail when he tries to recon stuff or expanse his universe.
The only real retcon issues are with Nanao's age. Everything else fits just fine.
I can see Mimihage making a twin for Ukitake's original sword spirit because Mimihage is against change the way Pernida is for it. He was moved to make a change in Ukitake but only the minimum he could get away with.
*This does raise more questions....*
According to Kubo, if Ichigo so desired, he could separate the sheath from the blade and return to the dual swords if he wanted... so basically both the old form and the new form of Ichigo's Shikai are both Ichigo's Shikai and he chooses to use the old form.
I wish we had brought up Renji and the fact that he’s the only character to have two completely different forms to his Bankai
Kazeshini's essence being its chain is further referenced by his bankai, which is literally just a ton of chains.
Please do a "what if kisuke joined aizen" video i need know
I mean it makes sense in a way that there are no dual blades.
God damn bully is well spoken, loved this
Id say thats what seperates them; kazeshini is a singular spirit when represented. Whereas both ukitake's and kyoraku's are represented as two being under one name.
On another note- since I learned about the two captains and dual zanpakuto, I've ALWAYS wished ichigo got 2 blades 😅 childhood fandom dream Come true
