    At Coursera I joined Machine Learning by Andrew Ng (Coursera co-Founder), IBM certification, Statistics by Stanford, and data science courses provided by University of Michigan. I am really grateful that I can accomplished those in time. Now I'm a freelance data scientist and always open for a new challenge in data world. Nice sharing btw. ❤️

    Congrats on getting sponsorship from Coursera! After spending 4 minutes scouring into the course syllabus, I agree that these courses are great resources for someone aiming for a data science career. However, one thing I am really curious about is that from a hiring manager's perspective, would a certificate play a critical role in finalizing the candidate?

    • @damselindata
      @damselindata  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Ben! I think the certificate itself won’t necessarily play a critical role, but the skills you acquire from completing the certificate will guide you through the recruitment process. - retrieve the data yourself (by scraping the web or using an API)
      - clean the data, build and optimize a model
      - deploy the project as a web application using flask / streamlit and Heroku or one of the major cloud platforms.

    I had some fun with the P4E course and definitely see the value of knowing Python but I stopped after course 2.
    My issue is that I work with SQL everyday at work and I was hoping to find a path forward that more heavily biased SQL since I have such a strong foundation already.
    More and more I’m seeing utility and career growth with Python and R though which is a little bothersome. SQL isn’t going anywhere, Databases will always exist but people are overlooking the value in favor of other skills.
    My hope was to get a foot in the door due to 4 years full time working with SQL and then add Python to the mix but it seems as if most want the Python first and then add SQL skills.
    Not only that, SQL courses are hard to come by unless you wanna break off 5k to Oracle, at least on Coursera it seems to be lacking anyway. Thing is, I prefer Coursera for the Plus benefits and certificates that actually carry weight.
    “ITProTV” (no hate to those guys) doesn’t look anywhere near as good on a resume as IBM or Oracle.
    Rough brah… anyway, thanks for the solid vids!

    • @damselindata
      @damselindata  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know that SQL is not the biggest buzzword in terms of technical skills but don’t be discouraged as it is ESSENTIAL and I’ve personally worked in data science roles where being sharp with SQL is far more important than with python (in cases where the sql requirements are more complex than the python ones). Even tho it doesn’t appear this way in job descriptions, sql is crucial for data work. However, I do agree that it’s not enough for most modern roles. So supplementing with some python will go a really long way. Thanks for checking out the video!!!

      @@damselindata thank you so much for replying. A few weeks ago I ultimately decided to take the IBM Data Science Professional Certification you recommended. I just finished the first of the ten courses. It was good. However in looking at the remaining ones I am concerned. I am reading a lot of reviews of complaints that the certificate is VERY heavy in bias to force using IBM Watson account and learn the tech on there. I am concerned that bias will hurt in my overall journey for principal knowledge. Also there is no way my current company will use IBM’s solution. More likely AWS’s. Because of this would you recommend I stop the IBM one and start the “Applied Data Science with Python Specialization” one from University of Michigan that might be less brand bias?

    • @damselindata
      @damselindata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Innocinema hi! Yes it definitely does use the suite of IBM tools to apply the skills taught. I agree that IBM tools are becoming less popular in the field of ML with the rising dominance of the three cloud leaders (AWS, Google, Microsoft). If you are looking to learn specific tools, this isn’t the one I would go with.
      I personally like to advocate that tools are not the point in data science. They will always be changing so there is no point to focus on tools when learning. As long as the tools help you apply the techniques, they have done their job.
      Everything university of Michigan puts out is amazing, including the data science with Python specialization. If you want to focus on the data science without being stuck with specific tools, it is a good choice to switch to.
      At the end of the day, read the reviews to find the best match for you. Reviews are your best friend, good job for reading them throughout your learning journey!

      Power BI is a great tool to be familiar with as a data scientist. However, I think that Python, SQL, machine learning and statistics skills are more important to learn as a beginner.

    Has anyone here actually taken the courses? Some of this cannot be “audited” beyond the index without paying first an extra monthly fee ON TOP of the annual membership (like the IBM one) .
    It looks like she only looked at the index but the delivery and teaching method is actually what you are buying.
    Anyone can create an outline of the courses in Coursera using Chat GPT. No shade but this is sponsored and the auditing was very superficial. It would be nice an updated version. I can guarantee the affiliate link sales will be worth the time investment ( hopefully more than 4 hours). I gotta be super honest because I would genuinely like to get a more in depth review from you.
