    Im amazed it stayed in tune for that long. One of the best synths ever made.

      Curtis chips are not too bad when they're fully warmed up. My JP-6 would stay in tune pretty reasonable after about 25 minutes.

    Richard Barbieri/David Sylvian were masters of getting the most uniquely beautiful tones from the P5.

      I agree, the way they program sounds from the prophet 5 is just ahead of time from 1980 to 1981, Richard and David were my inspiration to be a synthesizer kind of guy.

    Many great 80-ies popsongs were made with the Prophet 5. I remember being so fascinated by this synthesizer which was used by many bands back then. Thanks for your vid and explanation :)

    You're living the dream! What an absolute beaut. Do you borrow these for the demos or are they yours?
    Daft Punk's "Da Funk" was definitely an MS20 run back through its own external signal processor with the keyboard voltage modulating the filter cut off. Although, "Release the beast" that Daft Punk sampled is definitely the Oscillator Sync preset from the Prophet 5.

    I own one. It stopped working over 20 yrs ago. I'm afraid to send it out for repair...the shipping and repair cost, I wonder if it's worth it...and the paranoid thought "will they take advantage of me?" I'd love to have it working and sitting above my Studiologic 88, Korg T3 and Yamaha CS6R...would look nice and add old analog synth to the menu.
    BTW - Eurythmics used it a lot.
    EDIT - 1 yr later - I found a Prophet 5 repair shop close to where I've moved to. I'm going to take it there and see what my options are. Personally I've decided I don't really like the Prophet. It's not the type of sound I like. Everything sounds buzzy and alike from it. Maybe I can have it repaired then sell it. The Prophet doesn't seem to be too popular these days.

    This is my favorite analog synth, although I never owned one. They are extremely unreliable, all the P5s that came into my country in the 80s eventually ended up in the repair shop of a local guy here that still repairs synths. The sound tho, is out of this world. Luckily, Dave Smith the genius gave us the prophet 6 which sounds close enough and has all the presets of the 5. Unluckily, the prophet 6 has only 4 octaves, HUGE bummer.

    • @YotamPiano
      @YotamPiano 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rene, for me it is, I did preset comparison. It doesn't have the vintage smell but it definitely delivers the good sonically. I compared a track created entirely by P5 to the same one replaced with reversed engineered P6 programmed to sound like a P5. There's literally no difference. Personally I am not a fan of desktop modules tho, as a piano player I like my synths to have their own keyboards. I know it doesn't matter to most people it's just my thing.

    • @litemakr2
      @litemakr2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have both and the P6 is very close on most sounds in a direct comparison. The P5 has a bit more raw power but the sound is very similar, especially in a mix. With the many extra features the P6 is the more practical synth for most people, it sounds great. Not that I will ever part with my P5.

      The Prophet-5 is a true legend and still kinda state of the art nowadays. Its spectrum where it delivery flawless quality is unbelievable...one of the best synths every made. It always gives a strong base in every kind of sound youre creating and makes lot of fun programming. dave smith did a perfect job. To me the very first nordlead comes very close to my prophet-5, i compared them.

  • @ricardojsgw

    This video looks like a presentation of a brand new synth with never heard of features while does features have been enhanced a long time ago in subsequent synths. I was expecting more like an explanation of the specific features that the synth introduced at its time, why they where so special, if they continue to be so, what was later enhanced in new synths and what was changed for the worse if that is the case. One observation, the backlights don’t help to clearly see the synth’s physical characteristics because of the shadows casted.

      It's a VCO synth not DCO. In the Rev 3 version, as demonstrated here, it is build around the Curtis CEM3340 VCO chips. Keyboard and envelopes are digital, but that doesn't make it DCO.

      AXL trip No, the Prophet-5 was an analog synthesizer based around SSM chips, and CEM chips in rev 3s. The oscillators were still 100% voltage controlled, but they could be automatically tuned by the instruments Zilog Z-80 microprocessor. These were VCOs, not DCOs like in the Roland Juno-60 or Oberheim Matrix 6. I'm not sure where this misinformation came from, but DCOS hadn't even been invented in 1978. The new REV 2 as well as several other Dave Smith instruments use DCOs.

    From someone who produces music for a living and owns a prophet... just buy repro 5 which also comes with repro 1 by u-he. It’s hard tell the difference, neither is better than the other just slightly different but so are most prophets. Spend your money on a faster computer and sound proofing... older ain’t better.
