    I love all these classic synths because they hearken back to my younger days in the 70s and 80s. However, MAN am I glad I can get virtual versions of these that I can play on my PCs because I already hate to have all that analog hardware space taken up with them! All I can say is THANK YOU to Arturia, Korg, Native Instruments, and others for creating the virtuals of these synths! However, THANK YOU DR MIX for sharing the infectious joy of playing and creating sounds and music with them every week! Awesome sauce in an auditory package sprinkled with a WHOLE LOT of positivity by Dr Mix himself! Thanks dude!

    The sequencer isn't broken, -- it's disabled. The Prophet 10 has the internal sequencer disabled because a MIDI interface has been installed. The sequencer mini tape unit is only used for saving sequences (moot in this case).

    I remember selling my Oberhiem OB-X so I could get a Prophet-5 Rev2 (everyone was using them) with 1 more voice than the OB-X. I was soooooooo disappointed. I wanted my OB-X back but it was too late. Later I got a PPG 2.2 which was in the shop more than in the studio. Those days were back breaking (Hammond B3 and Rhodes.) Young folks now have everything I dreamed of. My KingKorg is wonderful as are my soft synths. TRUST ME you do NOT want one of these miserable beasts unless you are sadistic. There are really good reasons why these were discontinued.

    • @arcsound
      @arcsound 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blue Eyed Soul Man OBX vs P10, tough one. Both great. And when they are working, sound much better than anything since, especially plugins or virtual versions. Same for Hammond and Rhodes. Not only do they sound better, there is something visceral and wonderfully creative playing them.

    In 1983 or 4 a guy I worked with took me to see a 'Synthesizer' as his mate worked at Parkside Studios in Leeds UK.
    On the floor in a flightcase in an empty room was a Prophet 10. I played on it for 10 mins but was disappointed I couldn't reproduce anything that sounded like the Electro Pop hits.
    I don't know who actually owned it as Parkside wasn't a top studio by any means! The guy said they cost about £5000 which in '83 must have been more than a luxury car.
    Given how rare you say these were there can't have been many in the UK and I would like to think there is a good chance it is the very same one you have there!

    Prophet 10! A rare keyboard, indeed! They were prone to overheating and other problems but, was a pro-keyboardist's dream. Tony Banks used effect pedals with this, as well as other keyboards he had. Also, would've been a difficult keyboard to tour with, as they are heavy!

    Based on my understanding, the background of the Prophet 10 is inaccurate. Based on Mark Vail's account in "Vintage Synthesizers," the original Prophet was designed to be 10 voices. The first Prophets sold were all 10 voice units, but they ALL had to be recalled due to overheating. So, they ripped out one of the 5 voice boards as a solution (what else could they have done?) and it became the Prophet 5. Of course, the 10 voice version was something Sequential had wanted to do, so they eventually got around to it after the rev 3 revision.

    Very good sound since 10:00 it sounds like and could be played 'seriously' for the organ work of Olivier Messiaen, extatic songs (from before-war work). Is Olivier Messiaen an influence for you, or does it come from an other artist, or simply improvised ?
    Is it possible to make this sound precisely and around with EVI software (would it sound very différent with Arturia or other emulation ?) . By the way it would be really cool to have basis curse by Dr Mix to know how make classic sounds of Moog, Prophet, .. maybe 30 great basic sounds you would show in detail, oscillators, enveloppe, detune, LFO... (As it would then be easy for a beginner to shape this one..)
    - Also I would like to know what is the song Dr Mix plays at the end after 13:30

    6 years ago Slate had an article on the music of the original Terminator, with the clickbait headline: What time signature is it?
    slate.com/culture/2014/02/the-time-signature-of-the-terminator-score-is-a-mystery-for-the-ages.html
    They decided it was 13/16 although even that is not quite accurate.
    Because Fiedel was working with analog gear and nothing was sequenced, he didn't bother measuring out the meter on his Prophet-10. Analog electronic equipment back then had that Moogian tendency to drift off key and off tempo over time, so I can imagine his frustration at trying to sequence them in the days before MIDI.
    But because the song was born out of raw experimentation rather than a pre-planned effort through musical notation, he hadn't the foggiest idea what he had done.
