  • Waterlooville is a village located near Portsmouth in the South of England in the county of Hampshire. In recent yers it has been in decline. I travelled there to speak to some of the residents to get a better idea of what is going on. What you think of Waterlooville? Where should I go next?

I live in Waterlooville and have also heard about the high rates causing businesses to close. I think what this boils down to is the local council have no idea what they are doing. The area is quite affluent, I'd estimate a majority of the properties are over 500k and people live here with disposable income. They're spending it at Gunwharf, Southampton, places out of the area. What's the point of putting the rates up if the space is empty - you're getting zero income. You could make the rates 1/4 of what they currently are, you'd still be making more than nothing. Of course its obvious to anyone with two brain cells.
I really think the precinct could be lovely - like Albert Road in Southsea - if you encourage it. Unfortunately people that work in the Council are lazy thinkers. You need someone to really want to fix the problem but that means people with vision. I mean, we don't even have a cinema here, you have to go miles away. This is a populous area and everyone is taking their money elsewhere.

They know exactly what they're doing, they want everywhere closed so they can knock it all down and build flats, such a shame

I have lived in Waterlooville since 1984. Back then it was thriving, with independent shops and also a couple of chains, there was a small Tesco. It was developed where Wilkos is. There was a Waitrose which brought people in which shut in 2020. The NatWest has closed and HSBC has shut it's counter service (they tell you to go to Portsmouth or Petersfield) I shop at the M&S and Sainsbury's just outside the centre but I used to go to Waitrose and then around town.
The area around Iceland was supposed to be a 9 story block of flats but the developer pulled out. I'm not sure what's going to happen but I believe it will be a mixed development.
There has been an effort to get people back into the centre by making the Wilkos car park free for 3 hours, however it may not be enough unless there are shops people want to go to.

Thanks for the info. It was sad to hear how the natwest closing impacted the gentleman I spoke to. If the Iceland shut it'd be even worse!

I used to live in Waterlooville many years ago. The precinct used to be busy. Now the precinct seems empty and most shops that are open are down near Sainsbury’s on the retail park.

Grew up living in Horndean down the road from here, moved away around 20 years ago, pretty sure the shop with the blue shutters was a ross records last time I here (or at least very close to that shop). This is so sad to see compared to what it was when I visited Waterlooville all the time when I was young. Very sad, council should be ashamed and held accountable for allowing it to get into this state, makes me so angry.
Pretty obvious rents have priced people out with the sole intention of having them all close so they can knock em' down and build more fucking flats.

Lived in Purbrook 1970s, WLV was the nearest shopping center . Well' Way is a disaster, and a 'sign of the times' in the UK. W. Farm was the beginning of the decline. Then Wat. FC merger with Havant! Best thing?: the night Edgar B B and Pink Fairies played on Stakes Hill Rd. Here's to the sausage bun rolls in Guantlet's cafe.

I live not far from Cosham and as Kid in the 90's and 00's I remember going up to Waterlooville quite often but now there's not really any draw for me to go there since pretty much everything that is left there is available at almost every other shopping centre nearby. With the news about Wilko going into administration it could make things even worse for Waterlooville if they aren't able to find a buyer for the company. Havant used to feel like it was going a similar way but they managed to pull it back and now have a really good selection of shops, including some that are unique to there like the Video Games World store, the butchers and the Mr Simms sweet shop amongst others. Cosham itself has managed to keep itself in a reasonable position as well, there's actually a good variety of banks still open there, and the shops that do close don't end up staying closed for long since they aren't greedy with the rent and businesses want to go there because of how busy it gets, especially compared to other shopping places in Portsmouth like Fratton and North End, although North End seems to keep on fluctuating with how good it is to go there.

Hi, we live in /near Waterlooville and like many Towns they are closing down and dying, but your video does not reflect the whole area or give the right picture…many of us live in this area because we don’t have the parking issues of Portsmouth , we can access all main roads with ease….But the Ladies are correct things are changing, like most Towns.Waterlooville is more affluent than you realise, there are much worse places around.”For the times they are a changing”, said Bob Dylan.(In fact check out clips of Ghost Towns in the USA, its happening everywhere)So not totally right the video and impression you give/gained of one small area.Just feedback.😅

Trouble with Waterlooville precinct shop units is that they’re small. Only small scale businesses like hairdressers, beauty shops and cafes can function in them.

Same old story, greedy landlords, councils, car parking, internet, covid. As one landlord said to me back in the 70s, “we are not interested if you don’t make a profit for yourself, only interested in making the rent ! . That’s a fact, big London landlords that don’t give a dam about anything only themselves. Thank goodness I retired years ago.

I don't know the area, but if rates are high, there is a reason for that, the Council needs the money. They are not getting it from anywhere else. It's self-defeating, but between that and going into bankruptcy like so many other Councils, there is little alternative. This is the story all over the country.

Most of the closed down/boarded shops are actually being renovated or repurposed now 😂 after literally 10 years ffs 😂😂
Waterlooville used to be vibrant as fuck not that long ago!!
Scene Kids and Emo’s used to just chill everywhere in town. And everyone loveddddd it! 😅
Now it’s just dead, unless it’s Costa or the pubs.
