I played keyboards for 3 different productions of Godspell. My parents loved to come see the shows I was involved in, but because I did mot think they would understand or appreciate Godspell’s quirky vibe I did not offer until they asked what I was currently involved in, and expressed interest in seeing it. After a Saturday evening performance I headed out to the lobby not knowing what to expect. My father could hardly speak he was so moved, and had clearly been weeping. I should have trusted that true to form, Godspell always works it’s. God-inspired magic.

It’s been up hill ever since. I had my son watch this many years ago. I believe, I can’t remember exactly, but if I remember correctly, he cried. He went to live with the Savior 41/2 years ago. He was 25 and had high functioning autism. ❤️😢❤️

In the middle of my water bed shaking and screeching across our basement floor and not being able to yell or even speak I said Jesus' Christ please help me in my head. I sat straight up in bed turned on my light and never again did I deny Him. This is a condensed version of the story. It in total involved a devil worshiper, a Christian Ministers wife, another friend who worked with me and a patient in the facility where we worked.

I sang this song to my mother as she died. I mistakenly thought the words were "I shall call the pebble death... and we talk together about walking until I take Him from shoe, singing meet your new Lord. Then Ill take His hand, finally glad that you are here' etc. Strangely it still works though I sing it correctly these days and have a better understanding of 'daring' oneself to walk that path. It is a beautiful song in any case and I dont regret singing it that way.

It is a true gift you were able to be with your mother and sing for her at the end of her life. I would give so much to have been able to do this, but trust she knew and still knows how much I love her. We will scatter her ashes into the ocean next month to commemorate a year since her passing. For me, though, what makes the moment especially bittersweet is how he reacts even though, as Matthew's gospel has it (which Godspell is based on), most of those closest to him are about to fall asleep on him in his moment of need and run away in fear. Jesus loves them anyway.

    Where are you going?
    Where are you going?
Can you take me with you?
    For my hand is cold
    And needs warmth
    Where are you going?
Far beyond where the horizon lies
    Where the horizon lies
And the land sinks into mellow blueness
Oh please, take me with you
Let me skip the road with you
    I can dare myself
    I can dare myself
I'll put a pebble in my shoe
And watch me walk (watch me walk)
    I can walk and walk!
    (I can walk!)
I shall call the pebble Dare
I shall call the pebble Dare
We will talk, we will talk together
We will talk (chorus) about walking
    Dare shall be carried
And when we both have had enough
I will take him from my shoe, singing:
    "Meet your new road!"
    Then I'll take your hand
    Finally glad
    Finally glad
    That you are here
    By my side
    By my side
    By my side
    By my side
    (Spoken- Judas)
Then the man they called Judas Iscariot
Went to the chief priests, and said
"What will you give me to betray Him to you?"
They paid him thirty pieces of silver.
And from that moment, he began to look out for an opportunity
    To betray Him.
    By my side
    By my side
    By my side
    By my side

G_d-talk too quickly devolves into claim/counter-claim BS, but there's Something/Someone there, I feel, I believe (Lord, help my unbelief), reaching out to us. This is a song/scene which can re-awaken that sense, built into us (Imago Dei?), that wants to reach back (and out to each other as well!).

PS To me, and as a very former fundamentalist christian, I strongly suggest that it's best understood as a poem. (Remember, fundamentalists unflinchingly claim to have ultimate 'truths' & 'answers'. THEY DON'T !!! Not even slightly more than anybody else.) And yes, I do get the stunning beauty of this song & others, AS POETIC. Regardless, best wishes. You get to decide (something that, after they have you trapped, you will not hear from fundamentalists, although I do know that they camouflage their mind games very well.)

But tonight, I suddenly stopped facebooking or whatever to wonder, WHAT Is that little ditty I invariably lean in to when that happens?” (And have, for nearly 50 years of summer sandals) ... “I shall call the pebble “Dare!”
