This is lovely, thank you! But, I will hopefully not disillusion one of the commenters below, Jay and I actually wrote this song for something else entirely. But, when Gilmer McCormick and I brought it into rehearsal at La Mama, the 2nd workshop that created Godspell, John Michael Tebelak loved it so much, he put it in the stoning scene. There were three consecutive workshops that created my show, Godspell, and when Steve Schwartz came in to the third workshop at Cherry Lane and re-wrote all the music, he kept By My Side because he said he couldn't up with anything he liked better. So, even though the song wasn't written about Jesus, it WAS written specifically about one's beloved and the desire to challenge yourself (thus the metaphorical pebble in the shoe) to travel with this one you love throughout the journey of life. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Peggy. This is the redhead in the middle with the glow stick and birthday crown writing to you. This song has always held a weightier meaning for the three (four if you include our beautiful mother behind our dad the guitar player) of us. We lost our dad (guitar player) to Lewy body dementia and stage 4 cancer in February of 2015. This was recorded on July 12th 2013. Our dad was the bringer of music and faith to our lives. He spent most of his life writing beautiful songs to express his faith and inspire others to love as Jesus did. Unconditionally. This song is, and has always been, about my daddy. Thank you for giving us this incredible gift. We haven’t sung this song since then, I believe. Dad lost his ability to play shortly after this was filmed.
@@verylindsay3289 I'm so sorry for your loss, but it's so obvious from this beautiful youtube that he knew he was loved deeply and unconditionally. Peggy
I sang along to my cassette in my bedroom when it first came out as a lonely and socially isolated 12 year old with severe and at the time untreated psychological disorders. This song was my friend. That was a lifetime ago and Peggy but this song is still a welcome friend and I don't associate it with past trauma just with the peace and clam it always brought me. The quiet in the eye of the storm. You write a song but those that hear it give it their meaning.
Perfection. I saw Godspell on Broadway when I was 7. I have never been really religious, but this musical has always touched me in a deep way. Another one of my favorites is "All good Gifts". I still sing that to this day.
thereisaplace thank you so much, that means a lot to me, we grew up watching Godspell and singing this song together. It took on a greater meaning when we lost my dad (the guitar player) to early onset dementia and cancer a few years later. Thank you for listening.
Missy Sweigert - I truly hope music brightened your father’s path thru life and yours as well :-) BTW, your TH-cam playlists are fairly fantastic. Sadly sweet, with hints of rain and tastes of thunder.
This by far the best rendition on TH-cam of this poignant and beautiful song. Your version is exactly as the song should be sung. Exactly. I should know because I played guitar in Godspell - the Santa Barbara Gazebo Theatre One. This was produced by the legendary Jack Nakano and directed by my school mate Gary Goddard (director for the film Masters of the Universe). The cast was made up of my other schoolmates mostly from Santa Barbara High School and other local friends. We sold-out every show we performed. In Santa Barbara, we had a lengthy summer run at the Gazebo Theatre One venue at the beach in Santa Barbara at the old Mar Monte Hotel. Then we did a California and North American tour. We even recorded an album to sell while on tour. To this day I still remember playing guitar with our two heartfelt singers. It was the part of the show I most looked forward to. A beautiful memory that lives with me forever.
Reminds me of warmer and gentler times. Like maybe walking down one of the twisty Laurel Canyon roads after a rain back in the 70s. Stopping at the country store, and chatting with some of who’s who that were always there.
My favorite song from Godspel. Your rendition is so beautiful, as is often the case when siblings harmonize together. What makes it extra special is the love for one another that comes through in the looks you give one another. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Your cover of this song is so beautiful it brought me to tears. I was partway through when I read the comment about your losing your dad a few years after this, and that especially resonated with me since I lost my own dad to cancer less than 2 years ago and I still miss him so much. It's a great comfort to be able to share our griefs as well as our joys and the memories of those we love. Your father's beautiful spirit shines through this video and your lovely hearts do as well. Thank you.
gareth harteveld thank you so much. My sisters and i grew up with Godspell and we always loved singing this song in particular with my mom and dad. My dad(guitar player) passed away a few years ago so by my side holds a deeper meaning for us all now. Thank you for listening, hope you are well.

Hope you are well.

TheHobbitAnUnexpectedGamer haha yeah, that was his "tic" while playing guitar, i think most musicians have one, plus he was just a goofy guy. He passed away a few years ago so this memory holds a special place in my heart. Thank you for listening.
Gooniegirl thank you so, so much. It humbles me that this is being so well received. It's a very special memory for me and my family, especially now after my dad (guitar player) having passed a few years ago. Thank you for listening, hope you are well.

It is one of the most beautiful show tunes ever written Peggy and certainly the best in Godspell thank you for giving it to all of us.

This song always makes me cry… A very emotional tune. And, really, it fits perfectly for this point in Godspell.
