RENOVATING A RUIN: Our Italian Dream Pool in Tuscany is Finished (Ep 41)

  • Finally our pool in our property here in Tuscany, Italy, is finished. This was quite an exciting week for us to finally see the lining added and the water arrive. Some of you were asking who we used for the pool. In Italy, you need to also have a separate company that digs the hole, another company of builders who manage the cement foundation, the laying of the bricks and the border. We also used a third additional company to cut custom travertine for the border. For the actual pool itself we used a company called Piscine Castiglione. They do pools all over Italy. Every day I get so many emails and comments asking why you can’t locate the music I use or find it using Shazam. I purchase music licenses for almost all the music you hear in my videos. I buy them them from various royalty-free production music sites and most of the time they don’t list the performer because it’s music made only for film productions with an audio watermark throughout the entire track, unless you purchase the single-use license for $50-100 per track. I use a lot of opera so often I’ll reference the opera but I won’t be able to direct you to a recording of that specific performance that you could stream or buy on iTunes or Spotify. Hope that clears things up and thank you for appreciating quality music.

I wish there were more people like you, who appreciate what they have and build on that, instead of becoming envious of others. You are living a dream and it is well-deserved since both of you have been working very hard to get to this point. Your magical pool deserves adornments which complement the style of your property. I believe oiled teak would be a perfect choice. Untreated teak will evolve a greenish tinge when left to sit in the rain which rubs off on clothes. Natural fabrics like cotton in the shape of cushions have a much nicer feel on the skin compared to synthetic ones. You would have to shelter them from the elements, but they can be washed and easily replaced, if need be. I suspect, you will evolve this challenge into the most stylish design and in such a perfect way like you have always done. You simply are my heroine in modesty, discipline, character and ability. 😘

The cost of the pool and furniture is a luxury. The need for a saftey fence in glass panels across the front for asthetics and metal on the sides is a expenses that should have a budget for. As you know in Australia we have strict saftey codes for a reason. Our pool our responsibility to ensure all children visiting or our own precious children are safe, this expense should not be compromised, accidents do happen but prevention is better than the huge emotional loss if god forbid something happened. Lastly I will say Love your videos now that I have addressed the importance of a fence.

At the risk of repeating so many people’s cautions, yes, a fence is so necessary to have. We had one with our pool, but when we were at a crowded party, our two year old son reached into the pool for a ball and fell in. Luckily I was right there and paying attention. But I will never forget the look of his big eyes starring up at me from under the water, panicked, as he was sinking. It can and does happen so fast and so easily.

In the US pools are considered to be an “attractive nuisance” legally and even someone passing into your pool area when you aren’t using is a major liability. Nobody likes fences but sometimes a licked fence is a gift to others.

A pool fence is an absolute necessity.. Children can fall in, hit their head on the side of the pool and not be able to surface at any age, no matter how well they swim. My son fell in at 1, right beside me, never made a splash at all. I quickly pulled him up by the feet!! My niece at 4 who was able to swim well, fell in hitting her head on the side on the way, sinking to the bottom. Her 8 yr old brother found her and rescued her. These incidents happened within the pool area, which was fenced off. We need to be so vigilant and take all precautions necessary to protect our young ones. There are amazing styles of fencing materials around which as long as they are unscalable and have self locking gates will enhance the area. Minimum of 120cm high is law here in Australia. Toughened glass is very popular.

I had one child who was like a fish and could swim with me (in the deep end) at eight months. My eldest son however, would not let go of the edge of the pool till he was four years old! Because we knew two separate families who experienced accidents with children and swimming pools, we were very, very careful. Just do what seems right for your family and friends and enjoy your wonderful life together!

Hi Kylie, I live in an urban area and there are safety codes, one of which where there has to be a minimum height for a permanent fence around the pool. We have to keep in mind just because a child can swim it does not mean that there could be accidents. Yes as a pool owner you are responsible for any visitors including children because not everyone can swim. Congratulations on your achievements! Kylie I have enjoyed watching your beautifully produced and filmed episodes each week, you have made me fall in love with Italy. As a mother of 3 boys, all men now I fully understand your dream of having this gorgeous pool and spending long lazy days poolside as the children play. The reality is that children are curious by nature and will take any opportunity to steel away and have an adventure all of their own. Please fence your pool before you even consider what furniture you may wish to purchase. I worked as a swimming instructor for the Australian education department , educating children of the dangers of swimming without adult supervision. You can’t possibly be everywhere at once, nor can you always have eyes on your little man as he grows into a boy. Having said all that I thoroughly enjoyed raising my boys with their very own pool and I wish for you and your family all the fun we had.

I don't believe you could pay more attention to your son then you are! Mother's love creates the energy you need! You are not ,all of a sudden, going to have an irresponsible pool bash. & Throw caution to the wind! -that's not you guys! Some of the comments that I read about the fence and the whole idea that perhaps something horrific would happen is truly based on a terrific amount of fear. In my experience, having had children @an older age(43), I for one, believe that your dedication and obvious protective nature does eliminate the protection in theory, of a fence. You can't always rely on a fence, but you can always rely on responsible good parenting. You are their fence . Quite honestly , a lot of parents rely too much on artificial means that truly don't guarantee much. By no means am I not suggesting a fence be made but it doesn't guarantee. You do! There is little memory in and infant's mind. But I am quietly convinced he did remember that hospital experience. Something magnificent & joyful and sensual like the pool exposure , might be the perfect trigger to make a difference ! The thrill of a positive , completely new, place, & your embrace (both of you present ) could be a delicious & delightful experience that might negate from his hospital experience . To "forget about it". It might create a whole new memory for him. That memory could be so much bigger! I trust you both. You are careful people. It's not needed to prove anything to us. You are in a very isolated place. I have never witnessed any recklessness about either one of you.

So exciting for you and your family!
We have a similar pool where we live in Umbria (on the Tuscan border) 3.5 X 15 meters. We built it 10 years ago, as a pool for real swimming-=laps. We had/ have friends with small children, and never put up a fence. The rule is, children of assorted ages are not left alone. We have shaded areas, so it is easy and comfortable to always monitor the pool. Peace of mind. Fences are also not totally foolproof, so our solution eliminates further concern. I think this solution would work out well for you.
As for furniture, we have gorgeous teak furniture, most of which fold for winter storage. They are coated with "Woodskin", a product for sail boats. Very durable, impervious to the elements, and easily maintained.

Plastic rattan and metal are durable but get really hot. I’m glad that you are considering baby proofing the pool. My daughter and son in law “baby proofed” the entrance to the pool area by putting a fence at the porch from the house to the yard. It worked great for them but I’m not sure that would work for you. Otherwise, I’ve seen people use a cover for the pool or have a system where there are holes drilled into the pool deck that will accept mesh fence sections. It’s nice because you can take the whole thing down in minutes if you are having a party or when you’re done with the sections they can be sold. I live in Dallas, lots of pools, lots of kids. I have a friend who’s 11 month old baby managed to crawl out of the house and drown. Just do something.

the downside is that when it rains the pool cover fills with water. Also it fills with debris and needs cleaning every month with brush and mop. Take it from someone who has a pool cover.

Hi Kylie, please, please put up a fence or a motorized cover. Even children who know how to swim drown. Don’t take the chance. I know that you will do what is best for your family. And when your son starts walking, running and getting into things in a split second you will do what is necessary. I love, love the look of teak furniture with white cushions. It’s clean, classic and lasts for years. I have no doubt whatever you decide to do will be lovely. Congratulations on the completion of the pool.

Kyle we built two 2m x 91 cm box against our wall. The height of a diningroom chair. We put wooden lids on top that can open for cushions and water toys. I made matrasses covered with waterproof material.
The wall behind the boxed beds I made an artwork with thick plaster into which I carved a design. This I painted with a neutral colour.

Kylie, my concern is that you do need some secure fence around the pool. It simply is not worth the risk. Even when your boy is 3 or 4, accidents can happen. Children escape quickly and run around, can slip, or just fall in. Think on the options that best suit you, something very secure for your child and others. Your whole life can be changed in a second, then it is too late. In regards to the pool furniture, cast-iron can rust I believe. I have found outdoor cushions get very dirty and sometimes mouldy over time being left out. Your idea of a type of a cupboard to place them in would be good. Love and blessings from Australia.

Sorry I see you get hundreds of comments but I thought of one idea for you and the pool. We have had two pools and it was the best investment we made ever, especially as the children were growing up. One great thing I used at both pools were those ornate concrete benches along side my two or four lounge chairs. It was great for kids to sit on while they were in and out of the pool wet and even a nice spot to sit and contemplate the morning or evening around the pool itself. They are indestructible, and I think look great with rod iron or what ever you choose. I also had a concert round table with rod iron chairs. They all lasted between two pools for twenty some odd years till we moved, and had to sell the benches and table because of a long distant move. On the safety issue we had a fence around the first pool and then opted for an automatic safety pool cover on the second pool.

I agree, of all the furniture we’ve enjoyed around the pool over the years, the wrought iron was our best investment. It will out last you! Worth every penny.. buy a piece to add to your collection each season. ❤❤beautiful pool and you will definitely never regret your investment. I always loved having my children at home in their own yard swimming with friends and family. Such a healthy, fun choice of entertainment..Just always remember that it’s your pool, your rules, and the responsibility of pool safety will ultimately fall on you as the property owners when guests are present. A fence around the pool will give you a peace of mind you can’t imagine…you cannot always depend on parents of other children to keep up with them while visiting… so happy for you and your beautiful family! Much love and Blessings always❤❤

Kylie... as I footage of your pool, it looked like the pool was over 3 ft deep, even in shallow end...no enclosed section for children, except near stairs. But maybe my observation is incorrect. Because of an acquiatnance who had a pool tragedy, I would definitely encourage a fence enclosure and a gate or, perhaps pool cover also suggested. The neighbor's pool where I swim has a gate.... & they have a table and chairs within the gate for adults to be close to the children. May God bless your pool with en-joyment and protection. A good swim is so refreshing in hot weather.

We had a pool in Alberta, Canada, and loved it. For safety, we put a black colored chain link fence around it, and the chain link, being black just disappeared into the background. Then, after a few years, we took it down, when the kids were teens. We used a roll on pool cover with a bubble pad underneath to keep the water from cooling at night, but,,we are in Canada. I must say, the day we opened the pool in May for the season, until we closed it in September,,,,it felt like summer!!

Congratulations on the pool. It is wonderful. Just so you know, I purchased some teak lounge chairs for my garden but they gradually fell apart from the weather generally. The wood started to twist and the cross beams would fall out and so on. Plus they are xtremely heavy! Maybe you can buy the metalwork lounge chairs slowly. Like start with two and buy an extra one each year. I think they are the best option. I had a friend visiting me about 10 years ago after I moved to Italy and she talked me into buying a gorgeous weather-treated metal table and chairs for the garden. They still look new, and I love them, and although I resisted the extra cost initially, I am very grateful I listened to her advice and bought them. No matter what you decide to do, I'm sure it will be lovely. God bless you all. Hugs from Liguria (I moved haha).

You should consider a fence or electronic cover. It’s better to be safe when you have little ones, especially when they learn to walk. Never trust a child they never have any fear. I have a pool and just before my grandson walked we invested in a pool fence with a self locking gate. We didn’t want to take any chances. Even though you teach a child about the dangers of everything sometimes they don’t always listen.

That is how I felt about mine, I held or carried him everywhere. I had no stroller, car seat, or any of the must haves of today’s mothers.
