Thanks for uploading all these Falklands conflict videos! I was glued to the TV in America at the time, but had to leave on holiday to Hawaii in early June, so I missed the final battle scenes and liberation. I was lucky enough to visit the Falklands in January 2007. The woman who answered the phone when she was a little girl when UK forces called Fitzroy to ask if Argie troops were around, served us lunch in the Stanley cafe she now owns.

He was hired by the British Consulate to administer the islands that's all. When Great Britain returned from the war they rescinded Vernet's contract and when he refused to leave the islands he was then kicked out. But Great Britain always have the legal right of possession of those islands.. Something Argentina don't .. So, do not pay any mind to what they say.. It was the stupidest war of the late 20th century and yet also the most righteous war carried out by a Western power at the same time. For Argentina, it was nothing but a propaganda stunt carried out by an unpopular government, for worthless Islands with no strategic or cultural interest, against a small peaceful population who were neither composed of their countrymen, nor did they want to be. Even some of the Argie soldiers interviewed, quickly gathered this fact. They realized they had becomes the aggressors and put their life on the line based on a lie to invade a place where they didn't even feel at home. It would have been easy for the British to simply write off these worthless little islands and it's people, but they didn't much to their credit. The only righteous use of military force is in defense of ones people and their homes or a friendly ally.

The Falklands had been very important to Britain during WWII as shown by ships retiring from the River Plate battle docking there. Truth was Britain would have let it go but for the continual lobbying of its residents as the last referendum returned a vote of 99.8% wanting to stay under British control. As far as it being a colony - thats where the place has a population when you arrive to colonize but the Falklands were a British discovery so a bit different.
I'm neither British nor Argentine but after reading the history I have to say that Britain's claims are more compelling than Argentina's. This constant claim that Britain stole the islands from Argentina makes no sense. Britain has had a presence on the islands over a hundred years before Argentina even existed as a country. And Argentina's entire claim is based on their "inheritance" from Spain when it was Spain who just took the islands from England by force. (And then returned them again.)

Later on Great Britain gave him licenses for hunting and fishing and agreed that they should developed and cultivate the islands. At that time Great Britain was fighting the USA colonies. Afterwards they returned and rescinded Vernet's contract or permission. He refused to leave the islands claiming he brought people and development.. Great Britain them kicked him out. Since then they been arguing possession but they never had possession ( they do not even have a single document that could validate their claim) of those islands and they should never have. That is why I do not understand why the decolonization committee wants both country to negotiate..There is nothing to negotiate those islands are British for over 400 years and there is enough proof of it..

What I'd really like to know is how a video on the 1982 Falklands Conflict suddenly morphed, in the comments section, to a debate on who won the Second World War. The two are not really linked except that the Graf Spee was sunk by British Cruisers off Montevideo, which isn't a great distance from those islands, in 1939.

I’ve read that a reason that Europeans became particularly skilled in the profession of arms before the people of other continents was that European nation states were almost continuously fighting limited wars against each other. Supposedly, other continents were more or less unified along geographic boundaries and the people there just spent less time fighting each other than the Europeans.

Your statement is very unaccurate: 1-The April 2 landing was planned with 2 goals: 1)Take over the islands fast. 2) No british casualties. Goals achieved. 2-Arg navy went back to port when they realized that US satellites gave localization of Arg ships to Royal Navy. 3-Arg airforce had most old airplanes while UK was helped by USA with the most up to dated Sidewinder missile AIM9L. 4-UK army replaced units after each attack with fresh troops until they seized the position. 5-No space to answer.
Correction: It was a naval war fought at times on land as a diversion. The object was freedom of the seas to conduct our world commerce without interference. We got that PLUS the Brits out of the Great Lakes region which they were supposed to have vacated in 1783 but didn't. With New Orleans we controlled the Mississippi which is exactly like controlling the English Channel to UK. Big defeat for the British because it meant the USA established hegemony of North America & Western Hemisphere.
So America's first act was to try to invade Canada, which failed. They had initial success at sea against smaller British frigates, but by the end of the war the RN had imposed a blockade which led the New England traders to push the US gevernment for a peace treaty as they were facing bankruptcy. Plus the Battle of New Orleans took place after the peace treaty had been signed, so had no actual effect on the outcome of the war.
I doubt the Wainwright story because MacArthur was kind to him after the war and made sure he was on the USS Missouri for surrender. Wainwright thought he might be court martialed because he did disobey orders not to surrender and he worried about that while imprisoned. But Mac was generous. Why would Wainwright be entitled to a CMOH? Where was bravery above and beyond the cause of duty? It demeans the meaning of the medal because what he did was what officers do when defeated.

But any untrained fighter will opt for an AK47 because it's more resistant to weather, and has full automatic fire. That is a psychological component that is a greater factor for the user than the enemy - the untrained, often teenage fighter can hold it to his hip or stomach, and pull trigger. This gives him confidence to fight. M16s don't have this same abstract factor, AFAIK

You must know the UK is out-of-step with history and its trends. Las Malvinas is in Argentina's near region and is a hemisphere away from UK. You should respect Latin America and make a deal acceptable to Argentina. Renounce sovereignty and be allowed to live in peace and share in oil revenues. If you don't do this, the Islanders will be tossed under the bus by the UK. We all know the UK will buckle this time.

@A Sorry mate, but US forces are not perfect. That's not to degrade both past and present US forces. They did Europe a magnificent service during world war 2. However, during the invasion of Grenada, it was a classic example of how not to conduct an invasion. The intelligence was so bad that the lads on the ground had to use tourist maps and even had to raid Esso petrol (that's gas stations for our American cousins), with military coordinates handwritten on them. It still didn't prevent US forces attacking and killing their own men with airstrikes. America given the same equipment and resources couldn't have done any better during the Falklands.
We found out the bugger was actually our free breakfast and we were expected to add our spit to reconstitute it. They actually sent up a knife and fork.with bugger instructions We were told it should turn bright green when ready for consumption. In American hotel rooms we place a chocolate on the pillow. Big cultural difference. You can be sure we ate at Burger King during our stay thereafter. I could tell you lots of horror tales we encountered. But I don't want to sicken you.

That war never should have happened
It was the stupidest war of the late 20th century and yet also the most righteous war carried out by a Western power at the same time. For Argentina, it was nothing but a propaganda stunt carried out by an unpopular government, for worthless Islands with no strategic or cultural interest, against a small peaceful population who were neither composed of their countrymen, nor did they want to be. Even some of the Argie soldiers interviewed, quickly gathered this fact. They realized they had becomes the aggressors and put their life on the line based on a lie to invade a place where they didn't even feel at home.
It would have been easy for the British to simply write off these worthless little islands and it's people, but they didn't much to their credit. The only righteous use of military force is in defense of ones people and their homes or a friendly ally.

Britain gave up on pretty much all of their colonies. Falklands were different because BP thought there was oil WITHIN the islands EEZ.

The Falklands had been very important to Britain during WWII as shown by ships retiring from the River Plate battle docking there. Truth was Britain would have let it go but for the continual lobbying of its residents as the last referendum returned a vote of 99.8% wanting to stay under British control. As far as it being a colony - thats where the place has a population when you arrive to colonize but the Falklands were a British discovery so a bit different.

I'm neither British nor Argentine but after reading the history I have to say that Britain's claims are more compelling than Argentina's. This constant claim that Britain stole the islands from Argentina makes no sense. Britain has had a presence on the islands over a hundred years before Argentina even existed as a country. And Argentina's entire claim is based on their "inheritance" from Spain when it was Spain who just took the islands from England by force. (And then returned them again.)

Afterwards they returned and rescinded Vernet's contract or permission. He refused to leave the islands claiming he brought people and development.. Great Britain them kicked him out. Since then they been arguing possession but they never had possession ( they do not even have a single document that could validate their claim) of those islands and they should never have. That is why I do not understand why the decolonization committee wants both country to negotiate..There is nothing to negotiate those islands are British for over 400 years and there is enough proof of it..

Your statement is very unaccurate:
1-The April 2 landing was planned with 2 goals: 1)Take over the islands fast. 2) No british casualties. Goals achieved.
2-Arg navy went back to port when they realized that US satellites gave localization of Arg ships to Royal Navy.
3-Arg airforce had most old airplanes while UK was helped by USA with the most up to dated Sidewinder missile AIM9L.
4-UK army replaced units after each attack with fresh troops until they seized the position.
5-No space to answer.
Correction: It was a naval war fought at times on land as a diversion. The object was freedom of the seas to conduct our world commerce without interference. We got that PLUS the Brits out of the Great Lakes region which they were supposed to have vacated in 1783 but didn't. With New Orleans we controlled the Mississippi which is exactly like controlling the English Channel to UK. Big defeat for the British because it meant the USA established hegemony of North America & Western Hemisphere.
So America's first act was to try to invade Canada, which failed. They had initial success at sea against smaller British frigates, but by the end of the war the RN had imposed a blockade which led the New England traders to push the US gevernment for a peace treaty as they were facing bankruptcy. Plus the Battle of New Orleans took place after the peace treaty had been signed, so had no actual effect on the outcome of the war.
What about Vietnam?
I doubt the Wainwright story because MacArthur was kind to him after the war and made sure he was on the USS Missouri for surrender. Wainwright thought he might be court martialed because he did disobey orders not to surrender and he worried about that while imprisoned. But Mac was generous. Why would Wainwright be entitled to a CMOH? Where was bravery above and beyond the cause of duty? It demeans the meaning of the medal because what he did was what officers do when defeated.

But any untrained fighter will opt for an AK47 because it's more resistant to weather, and has full automatic fire. That is a psychological component that is a greater factor for the user than the enemy - the untrained, often teenage fighter can hold it to his hip or stomach, and pull trigger. This gives him confidence to fight. M16s don't have this same abstract factor, AFAIK

You must know the UK is out-of-step with history and its trends. Las Malvinas is in Argentina's near region and is a hemisphere away from UK. You should respect Latin America and make a deal acceptable to Argentina. Renounce sovereignty and be allowed to live in peace and share in oil revenues. @A Sorry mate, but US forces are not perfect. That's not to degrade both past and present US forces. They did Europe a magnificent service during world war 2. However, during the invasion of Grenada, it was a classic example of how not to conduct an invasion. The intelligence was so bad that the lads on the ground had to use tourist maps and even had to raid Esso petrol (that's gas stations for our American cousins), with military coordinates handwritten on them. It still didn't prevent US forces attacking and killing their own men with airstrikes. America given the same equipment and resources couldn't have done any better during the Falklands.

You really love to twist a few events in history to become "facts". How many naval battles were in British home waters? Precisely one US raid.
