Ask is used when you're asking a question. Told is used when there's a listener also in the sentence. If there's no listener then we use Said. Eg :- Neeta said, "Can I go ?" Neeta asked if she could go. Ram said to Shyam, " I will help you." Ram told Shyam that he would help him. Ram said, " I will help you." Ram said that he would help me. ( here you is changed into me because when there's no listener, we consider ourselves as the listener. So 'you' becomes 'me' here.)

1. For 'say/tell' the tense doesn't change. 2. If 'must' means a compulsive action then it changes to 'had to'. But if it's an advice/rule then it remains unchanged. For example Spoken: "I must work tomorrow" Reported: "He said he had to [or must] work the next day." Spoken: "The government must act on this!" Mam when we use ask,told in place of said in indirect speech could you explain it more clearly
