I separate the roots only when the tree is really root-bound. I try to up-pot when I think the roots have developed enough to the point where they’re not yet root-bound but may be soon.
Thanks for the Fog content sir! This is my first year growing figs. I have a Violette De Bordeaux which is a nice size and I also have a LSU Purple which is a very small cutting but growing nicely. Currently living in PITTSBURGH. Moving soon though back towards Philly suburbs. Waiting until I move to plant into the ground. Currently growing in pots. I think my container just may be a tad small for my VDB

I also have been growing figs for a few years, I currently live 15 mins outside of Pittsburgh, but I have no plans on moving east. I have two Chicago hardy, one in-ground, two Violetta de Bordeaux, a beer's black fig, a kadota, and a recently acquired sefrawi that has yet to put on new growth in the month that I've had it.
@@unknown869 I almost bought a beers black from Lowe’s yesterday. It was pretty big. But it was the ONLY plants not on clearance basically. I want more honey type variety and not that much room, if it was on sale I would’ve got it.
They are also sold on Amazon. The only reason I know that is I just looked them up a few days ago. I found that you can buy a few of them for the price of one in the stores. And they have the trays for those sizes, which I love.
I don't think it was a mistake since you were able to remove the fig without losing any roots

How do you know when it's time to up pot? I noticed you didn't separate any roots before putting it in the new pot. Is that traditionally what you do?

I get the larger pots at a local garden center.
