The thing about Ali’s character is that he’s too trusting/naive. He trusted his scumbag boss would pay him after working 6 months basically free. He believed and respected Sang-Woo after he showed him kindness. He is a foreigner in a different country so he’s probably used to people being racist or bullying and in these games he found some people that he could trust (kinda). So while I and most people wished he was a bit more suspicious about the whole deal, he had to believe Sang-Woo. I read a really good quote that fits this - “the person you would take a bullet for, is the one behind the trigger”

This is exactly what I was thinking. I was honestly getting a little pissed at Sheera. Like how are you gonna get mad at the guy for being trusting and loyal. Even if he's not making the right decisions, he's doing his best to help everyone get through.

    • @ZombehPanda
      @ZombehPanda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +492

Honestly it just made me love Ali even more. The minute Sangwoo suggested there was a way for them to both survive Ali wanted to believe it because he is a good guy. We knew he was the type to risk his own safety for the wellbeing of others the minute he grabbed Gihun's jacket to keep him from being shot. The thing I loved Ali for from the start is the same beautiful character trait that ultimately was his downfall and while it hurts I'm ok with that. I'm glad the game never changed him.

I think the reason why Ali died being betrayed was to showcase that he got into the squid games because he was naive and believed that his boss would pay him for his work. Kinda sad cold hard truth that because he's too trusting and naive he also got played by Sang woo and met his death the same way.

There is a video that shows all of their death was already being foreshadowed before the game. Remember ali snatching the money from his boss and runaway. Then in here his death scene was the same being snatched of his marbles.

Ali was the only pure person in that group. He wasn’t a criminal, he wasn’t a liar, he wasn’t a cheat. He was just an honest guy trying to provide for his family who had been screwed over by his shady boss. He’s the only one who physically put his life on the line to save someone’s life during the games. A stranger, even. He had morals and convictions, and couldn’t bring himself to have another person’s blood on his hands, even at the end. And it was his good heart that ended up killing him. He was simply too pure for the games. He was dead from the second he walked back into that car.

I know everybody was so emotional over Ali's death, but honestly Ji-Yeong's story felt personal to me. Her saying that she doesn't have a reason to leave with all the money since nobody would be waiting for her broke my heart. Ali would be over the moon if he won the money but with Ji-Yeong, nothing would change. She wanted them both her and Sae to survive since that would be her one reason. "When we get out of here, let's sip some mojitos"

Maybe it’s just because I was spoiled on Ali’s death, but Ji-Yeong’s hit me a lot more. While Ali had a rough time of things we can assume he at least had some good times (being with his wife, becoming a father, making friends even if only for a short while). Ji-Yeong’s whole existence just felt empty with her literally being set up to fail from birth. She had problems that even money couldn’t fix, which you can see when she gives up at the end. Her whole story felt like some sort of Greek tragedy

Exactly my thoughts. I just watched that episode and even that young girl was the newest one who got introduced, I did connect with her the most in that short time. Not only the story did hit different with the assaulting religiously father of her (which makes sense now, why she mocked so much about that other religious dude in the team game).

But she died on her own terms, as much as anyone can who is in this game. That made her death, while emotional, also inspiring. The self sacrifice and really I can’t imagine how any one who wins this game returns to any kind of life after witnessing and participating in so much death. Sang-woo also paid for his bus fare and readily accepted him into his team. He had literally zero reason to doubt sang-woo’s intentions. Yes he should have checked the bag but his assumption was that it was the two of them against the others not him against his friends

Bro you gotta think about it. All Ali had to do was look inside the bag, and see if the marbles are really there and he didn’t even do that. He doing this for his entire family and only needed one marble but instead he chose to follow up with Sang Woo bs. It still fascinates me that he didn’t see the shift in sang woo behavior because he was all calm but as soon as he starts losing he flips out.

I understand being upset at Ali, but I wouldn't say he's stupid. Or at least he didn't deserve to be derided that much. His character is of a naive foreigner who trusted and cared for his friends, ESPECIALLY Sang-woo for paying for his call and a bus ticket. Ali probably never experienced generosity like that at all so he became overly trusting of him. But Sang-woo was clearly not some generous friend like Ali saw him as. So it makes so much sense for him to trust Sang-woo in that moment since HE had no evidence that Sang-woo was truly that cold.
WE had that evidence. Ali did not.
I get its a death game and all, but you also really have to look at Ali's perspective and his character. The way he acted was consistent with his character. If you defend Sang-woo for doing what he had to do to survive, then you have to acknowledge that Ali did what he BELIEVED he had to do to ensure he and his friend survived.
I'd be far more mad at Sang-woo for pulling something that cold and heinous with someone who didn't deserve it, than to call Ali stupid for not predicting that his closest friend in this game was ready to manipulate and betray him.

Calling Ali stupid and not taking in the scene was really annoying. The guy is naive, trusting and has a good heart. They've established this over and over. It's his character. He looked up to Sungwoo like an older brother (he literally calls him it) and really thought he wanted them both to get out. The whole point of the episode was the tragic irony of the relationships that have formed and the characterisations of the players in those pairings. Sheera was particularly obnoxious to watch this time around. Not understanding the characters and paying attention to the interaction of the scene makes you spout ignorance at the screen. but you can tell that Ali calls him sang woo "hyung". Although "hyung" is a Korean word that means older brother,
he is used as a friendly expression to refer to a person above whom he trusts and follows. Ali dies calling him his brother until the very end.

i think the point some might be missing about ali is that it's been set up for his character the whole time to be trusting and see the best in people, even willing to put their lives before his own (as he did with Gi-hun in the very first game). he's also a pretty simple guy. he didn't check his bag because he didn't want to believe that sang-woo, the guy who gave him money for the bus when he didn't have to, would ever cheat him. stupid, sure. but he was who he was until the end. i think this episode was a pretty good payoff in general for everything we've learned about these characters up until this point and that may be lost in debating who was smart and who was stupid, etc, which really isn't the main focus of this episode

I will not tolerate this Ali slander! He was not stupid, he was just a sweet person. It would never occur to him to betray a friend that way, so he trusted Sangwoo as his friend who helped him and took care of him so much. Ecpecting people to do the fair or decent thing isn't stupidity. It just means he didn't have the character for betrayal and had never been betrayed before.

Ji-Young was so thoughtful and considerate that at the very end she did everything in her power to take the load off Sae-Byeok's shoulders telling her "thank you", that it wasn't her fault. The same with the Oh-Il-Nam the old man. Also, "Sae-Byeok" in Korean means "dawn".
In Korean "hyung" means "older brother" and is very informal/loving in a language and culture where formalities/etiquette mean everything, you'd *only ever* call someone "hyung" if you're blood, or very close and only if they permit you to do so. Until the very end, Ali was calling Sang-Wu "hyung" because he genuinely trusted and cared for him.

Everything Ali and Sang woo did was entirely in character. Sang Woo in his introduction was the only one who read the fine print regarding the games 3rd rule. He also shared that information despite wanting to continue. Giving others an out even at his own expense. He displayed the characteristics that Gi-Hun bragged about, except Ali actually experienced it. He respected him and spoke to him with honorifics, which Sang Woo eventually reciprocated by telling Ali to refer to him as Sang Woo Hyung. Used to describe a brother. Ali went into the game with zero reason to doubt this man based on cultural reasons foreign to some. Sang Woo was always morally gray, and pretty dubious but he did enough to benefit the team that it's reasonable to think he'd find them another out.

@@Dan_Kanerva You and I are not Ali. It's as simple as that. Like I said, Ali's character has been set up as a naive one from the start. He didn't get paid for 6 months and still continued working. Sang-woo also showed him kindness by letting him borrow his phone and giving him money for a bus ride. For naive people like Ali that has a lot of effect. Go back to episode 5 when they were giving each others' names, and when Sang-woo told Ali to "just call me hyung", Ali's face lit up and was really flattered. Hyung means big brother in Korea and if you're calling someone hyung, that means you are close. Also, when they were told to partner up, Sang-woo chose Ali over his childhood friend Gi-hyun. That made Ali think that Sang-woo respects him, and acknowledges him as a dependable person. I think all those things make the scene of him naively giving his marbles to Sang-woo believable. He probably thought that there's a possibility that Sang-woo was tricking him, but he didn't want to believe it himself because Sang-woo have always been kind to him.
