What are your suggestions about moving to Scotland without knowing anybody in Scotland lol? Following up on your tip about references and someone who can guarantee you can pay your bills. 😅 I'm scared to not find a place to live once I'm ready to move to Scotland lol.
Lovely vlog and some useful insights. I am happy that you're loving life in E'burgh - I'm a Scot living in London but about to move back to Glasgow but Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities ever. You really need to clarify the CT situation. As a rule of thumb the following is true. If you live in an HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) the CT will be included in the rent. If you live in a self-contained apartment then you'll be personally liable for the CT. Being a strudent is immaterial. The boxroom trope is unhelpful. If the boxroom is part of an HMO then you are, possibly, making the landlord liable for extra CT and are certainly invalidating his housing insurance. I have 4 flats around London that I let to students. All are well maintained and all are priced reasonably. Two have large storage rooms that could be squatted in. Do not do it, though. You may get a 'free'place to lay your head but you are heaping liabilities on the landlord. If you can't afford your own place then do not freeload on an ethical landlord.
A bit of an important question. Should I be worried about Scotland wanting to be independent and the whole thing with Brexit? Should I still stick to my goal to move there and stay? If scotland is able to become independent they'll probably rejoin the EU after a few years but those times would be tough right? Or what would happen if they had to stay with the UK?
I want to move to Scotland but reading about the whole Brexit and Scotland independence thing has me a bit worried. Should I back out or still go once I finish my degree?
You mentioned you were coming from Puerto Rico? I see Brexit was a massive hit to anyone from the EU, or anyone who is doing business from the UK with the EU. I am both, so for me the independence comes with upsides, but you're right to think that you might fly right into a harder period of time for Scotland, the period between cutting UK off and before stepping back into EU. Especially considering it'd be relatively soon after the pandemic - honestly if I were you I might be more worried about the lingering effects of that. TLDR news has some good videos on it, you should have a watch .) HOWEVER - I think it would be a really fascinating time to experience, a nation getting back its independence and power to fully lean into its own identity!
@@Kakibot Alright, I'll watch TLDR news tomorrow. Scotland is becoming something of a dream of mine very quickly so even if it falls on hard times I'll go and try my best. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico but I will view Scotland as my home. I'll just have to make it through those times of independence like everyone else. One thing that will be pretty hard for me ( I think) will be finding love with a Scottish woman. I've never had success with that before and finding a partner in Scotland is apparently very different from what I'm used to. But I'll just continue to better myself during these 4 years and learn to cook amongst other things. I'll do my best as usual and hopefully find love with a Scottish :P.
@@Kakibot Thank you so much for your advice, it really helps me a lot as I don't know anyone from Scotland that can help me with this. I talked to my proffesor about it today but all he could really tell me is that I should do what I want.
What if ur just moving from a country in Europe to Scotland? Not for study but just because you like the country? Are there any jobs for graphics design, photoshop and so on?
I was thinking about moving to Scotland. How hard is it to get a job/ what paperwork & stuff do you have to go through to get the ability to get a job there?
Hmmm it depends on where you're coming from - unfortunately this is a bit of a turbulent and uncertain time even for Europeans wanting to come in so for now it might be the best to wait and see how Brexit turns out - it's not unlikely that Scotland will try for independence again after it, and indie Scotland might be easier to move to than post-Brexit UK!
Loving these tips and your positivity. I just moved to Edinburgh, from Perth Western Australia! This one was particularly fun for me, having just gone through a fair bit of what you've described. Always depends on where you're moving from I guess? And how they define "rough". For me, Edinburgh is a place where once the worst is over (job hunting, flat hunting) it's just such an amazing place to live. BUT - Finding both jobs and flats would have been a lot easier for me in Prague.

Most parts of Glasgow are safe these days and the belief that it is a dangerous city is based on how things used to be back in the 70s. Admittedly you do sometimes get drunken neds being a nuisance in the city centre at weekends but they make so. much noise it's usually easy to avoid them
I'm planning a move to Scotland atm, preferrably to Edinburgh but open to other cities. I'm from Finland. Let's see how easy it is for me! :) Brexit is complicated but it has nothing on me! Unless they build a wall around the UK and close the borders xD
I'm trying to stay optimistic for people moving in from Europe! Scotland is quite open to European immigration in its attitude so that definitely helps, lot of the incoming workforce seems to be pretty essential to local economy! So fingers crossed! Hope your move works out super smoothly!!
Brexit is such a mess Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain and I very much doubt that any sane person voted for the disastrous No Deal scenario that might happen now. If that is what happens it is further proof that the UK version of democracy is not fit for purpose and the UK parliament is controlled by total incompetent fuckwits

Such a useful video! I'm from Belgium and I'm thinking of moving to Scotland, but with my bachelor's degree in teaching (Dutch and Latin) I'm not sure if I'll get a job there very easily ... Also, how do you even start planning your relocation? Where do you begin?
For me the start was being sure my uni would accept me - so now I think I'd start with looking at jobs! I have friends who are currently working on moving to Scotland and their strategy is usually visiting Scotland once or twice and attending interviews where necessary (I see that many of them actually do their interviews through Skype only and I did witness this leading to a successful job offer!) before moving here "full time". Knowing where you're gonna work and what you're gonna get for it is deffo the best base for planning out everything else! (You could even look into freelance teaching, but I think that'd be better as a side gig!)
Thanks you! It's good to know I don't have to move there first to get a job. Besides, I didn't know Skype interviews were actually a common thing. I'm still thinking of going for a master's degree in Belgium. And while that'll require working as a teacher and studying at the same time, it'll definitely increase my chances of finding a job abroad.
Shouldn't be too complicated - but I know that certain parts of the infrastructure, like the Scottish NHS, work somewhat independently on their English counterparts so I assume there'd be some paperwork to go through!
These tips are great!! I’m considering moving from London and wanted to know what the flats are like? Are mice common in flats and is it difficult to find jobs there?
Hmmm... mice aren’t uncommon but they don’t seem to be causing too much trouble (but then again we have a cat and in our last flat I noticed the mouse would only ever come out when the cat was at the vet’s x) ) ... personally I hate clothes moths a lot more and we seem to have a lot of those in Edinburgh ./
It was quite scary at times! But I guess at 22 I was able to deal with all the stress of moving countries better than I would now, haha .D Thank you for all the sweet comments on my videos - I really appreciate them .)

Kilts are mostly a part of formal attire, so you often see them at weddings and other special occasions! If someone walks around in a kilt it doesn't really raise any eyebrows among locals, I guess it's like if someone walked around in a nice tuxedo, and possibly similarly common to see.

I'm from Puerto Rico and have always wanted to move out as soon as I possibly could. I was thinking of moving to north carolina but I've recently discovered that I absolutely love Scotland and I would love to live there. I was thinking of going in about 4 years and finish my masters degree in Scotland. After watching this video though and some others I'm a bit scared and worried I won't be able to afford rent, college and food. I really want to meet people too and date. I would be completely alone in Scotland far away from my family and I wouldn't even be able to visit on holidays.
It would be a big move for sure! It’s definitely not an easy decision - I think if you had access to some sort of student loan or a scholarship, that’d help a lot during your studies, but I realise that’s not an easy resource to have available. But I can’t imagine you’d feel lonely for long, locals are very open to making friends 🖤
@@Kakibot Thank you for replying! I don't know how I would go about trying to get a scholarship or student loan as I don't know much of how that works and I'm a foreigner too. But I'd have to research it thoroughly. I wouldn't want to share an apartment with strangers either. One of the things I'd like to do quickly is to find love. Another problem I have is that I don't think I would be able to visit Scotland prior to going there permanently unless I saved up a lot. Overall I have the guts to pull off such a big move (probably the biggest of my life) but it really scares me at the same time. Wish I had someone living there who could help me but if it's true that people there help just about anyone I should be okay? I have a few years to think about it I suppose but I should decide if I'm going 1 or 2 years before I go.
Thanks for making this video! My boyfriend and I want to move to Edinburgh next year. I have an Italian citizenship and we're getting married so he can move with me. I visited Edinburgh in 2015 and fell in love with the city. I hope there would be no big changes after Brexit for European people, fingers crossed!
@ODIN No, you didn't. You voted to stop uncontrolled illegal immigration (and mind you, Scotland - which is the theme of this video - didn't say yes to Brexit, so I'm not sure what "we" you're talking about). If you're equaling illegal immigration to legal movement of skilled and educated people who will pay your taxes and contribute to the wellbeing of local society and economy, you've got a problem.
@MAGNI The Scottish people voted by 62% to stay in the EU. The Scottish parliament voted by 69-59 in favour of IndyRef2. The SNP had it in there election manifesto that if there is a significant change such as Scotland being forced out of the EU then there should be another independence referendum. The SNP won that election. Westminster has ignored the Scottish people, the Scottish parliament and the Scottish government. In an independent Scotland the Scottish people would be governed by the government that they vote for and not be governed by the government that another country voted for.
I'm planning on moving to Glasgow next year and I'm finding it stressful to find a good flat. I'm not that trustworthy of online pages. Is there anyone you would recommend ? or any other advice on how i could find a place
I totally get that - renting straight from the landlord can be hit and miss (although personally both I and most of my friends had ok experience). Will you have time to actually view the flats before moving in? Is there someone in Glasgow who could view them on your behalf?
I don't think she meant it was more flattering than being Czech, but rather it was just a kind way to correct people. She's not saying one is better than another, or getting upset when people guess wrong. That's what I understood from it.
Hey Geneva! I'd love to help (although it's been a while since my studies + the current situation is just a mess when it comes to travel or moving countries ./) - anything specific on your mind?
@@Kakibot Thank you. Would you happen to know anyone who has children originally from another country. I am nervous about housing specifically. Hi I just found your channel ❤ I want to move to Scotland 🏴 myself so I’m glad I found u
Fingers crossed it works out for you!! .)
TLDR news has some good videos on it, you should have a watch .)
HOWEVER - I think it would be a really fascinating time to experience, a nation getting back its independence and power to fully lean into its own identity!

I'm just about to try register at a GP and dentist - so am super glad to see your tip about going first thing in the morning!
Another question - I hope not inappropriate - is where do you get your hair done? It is so so pretty, and want to go somewhere based on referrals rather than trying my luck! :)

I'm so confused now because there's some videos on TH-cam from Scottish people saying living in Scotland is rough for most areas.
Always depends on where you're moving from I guess? And how they define "rough". For me, Edinburgh is a place where once the worst is over (job hunting, flat hunting) it's just such an amazing place to live. BUT - Finding both jobs and flats would have been a lot easier for me in Prague.
Bullshit! e.g. Glasgow has been voted Roughguide "Worlds friendliest city" twice in the past 5 years!
@@ewanw5654 You should get more up to date with your information.
How Scotland stemmed the tide of knife crime. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-45572691

In Scotland bad debt is not a crime. That means un less it's a court ruling you cannot be jailed for not paying on time,or ever.

I dont have any connections in scotland either so I wouldn't have anyone to help me at the start.
@MAGNI
The Scottish people voted by 62% to stay in the EU.
MAGNI hi magni, you’re obviously angry, wanna talk? Being serious.
