A colleague introduced me to these tops, and I thought a similar thing. Then I needed a metal spinning top, as I realised what calm can be found in playing with one. I bought many tops and there is no other spinning top as elegant or as perfect as a Foreverspin Top.
I really struggled to get good / consistent spins for months after receiving a gift of two of the five top sets. I'm right handed so I never gave a second thought about using my right hand and spinning counterclockwise. For no apparent reason, other than they were sitting on my left at the bar, I tried my left hand with a clockwise spin. I couldn't believe the difference. I now spin everything from magnesium to Damascus steel with 90% success rate. I can usually get all 10 spinning simultaneously on my first attempt. I'm convinced that my right brain controlling my left hand was the key to this success.
Oh, you HAVE to SPIN the top!!! I though it spun by itself. I got it out of the box and wondered why it wouldn’t spin. Figured it needed batteries. I tried dropping it onto the ground to see if that would engage the spinning mechanism. So you have to spin it first to get the spinning mechanism to start. Like a pull start on a lawn mower? These are great, however if Apple had designed it, they would be all rounded, instead of the flat edge. Machining a rounded edge would increase costs no doubt, but would make it look more zen.

Looks cool. Forever, not quite. More like an exercise top. The mass it too high so the rpm has to up there to keep it up. It will make you better at spinning a well designed top. Honestly it's a cool looking movie prop. Don't even think your going to get 5 minutes of spin on these tops. Inception really stretched it on this one. However if it stays spinning for 6 minutes you probably aren't in reality.
I have a copper top. After a few weeks, my best spin time is 3 minutes and 5 seconds. It's a bit of a trick to get a good hard spin without the top going off the glass base, but it can be done. Got to release it just right while giving it a good hard spin.

I contacted Foreverspin and they told me it is operators error or problem. What a waste of my money. Just an expensive item in my junk drawer. I never even got a cloth to clean the base. Or even a key chain as others would get.
My favourite part is the huge “fuck you” to their own country by charging Canadian customers for a Canadian-made product shipped from Canada in AMERICAN dollars.

On 3 different occasions over the years, I somehow managed to do a spin that stayed upright after it stopped spinning! I was so shocked the first time. This is no lie, It can be done! I think it does depend a bit on how level your table surface is and how straight you manage to release it. Please reply to this if you've ever done it, I can't be the only one.
@Micah Thomason I find that hard to believe because these things are very well engineered. I would try to video it but It could take who knows how long to repeat it. Mine is stainless steel, if that makes any difference.
How about creating a deep-learning video analytics (e.g. OpenCV-based) to measure the time - just point a cam to the top, and it will automatically measure the time, and if it stops upright, it will post the video to youtube :-)
That happens because you got a tiny flat spot, I have made some myself(different geometry) and I have one that everytime I spin it on a nice flat surface, it stays upright.

Geez man come on. its pretty obvious why the dock was flipped. the dock is flipped to store the top, its not meant to spin.

The base is glass with a very low coefficient of friction, and ever so slightly concave, to keep the top centered in the middle.
